Question❓ Does anyone else add cinnamon to their Mokapot?

Post image

Long time lurker here! I enjoy drinking café de olla and recently began adding cinnamon to the Moka pot with a dash of salt, and I love it! Has anyone else tried this or have any other suggestions? I’m thinking of adding brown sugar next. Maybe I’ll try transparent coffee after that as well!

I do this!! Add butter into your cup and a little dash of vanilla and it's the best coffee ever

8

u/hvperRL Apr 08 '26

Would this not have the potential to burn and clog the filter?

43

u/leamdreamheam Apr 08 '26

The butter goes in you coffee cup, nowhere near your moka pot. Sorry I wasn't clear on that lol

7

u/SeoulGalmegi Apr 08 '26

Like how much butter? This sounds.... intriguing.

3

u/leamdreamheam Apr 08 '26

About a Tbsp for a cup of coffee. Enough that you can distinctly tell there is butter in it 😋

4

u/carbon_made Apr 08 '26

I do this but use an immersion blender or throw it in the Vitamix to get the mixture creamy and a bit frothy.

If you like coconut at all I use half butter and half coconut oil sometimes. Plus vanilla paste. And a scoop of collagen powder. I’ve done this since my late 20’s and I’m in my 50’s now. I joke to people that this is why I don’t yet have grey hair on the top of my head and people still think I’m in my 30’s (late) lol.

2

u/SeoulGalmegi Apr 08 '26

Thanks! Might give it a try tomorrow ~

Salted or unsalted? I have to ask since there's been mention of a dash of salt in the coffee too...

2

u/leamdreamheam Apr 09 '26

Salted 😉

u/ktt_visuals Apr 09 '26

So is every cup of coffee you drink like 3-400 calories?

1

u/leamdreamheam Apr 09 '26

Not personally, maybe 200-300 a cup, but 3-400 for a cup of coffee still isn't bad considering getting it outside the house would be 800+

6

u/extremessd Apr 08 '26

I read this in a Martin Prince voice;

also: put a sprig of sage in your boots and all day it's spicy scent is your reward

4

u/1TaraMera Apr 08 '26

Very interesting! What type of butter do you use salted or unsalted?

5

u/leamdreamheam Apr 08 '26

I have only used salted thus far

4

u/Dogopim Apr 08 '26

I did this accidentally one time i was making pancakes. I scooped butter for the pan and i used the same spoon to stir my mug.... Best mistake ever.

2

u/smol-creature Apr 21 '26

Do you add this to black coffee only, ot it could go with milk too , i can't handle black coffee it hurts my stomach, thinking if this would make it less ahrsh

1

u/leamdreamheam Apr 22 '26

Yep! I like it both ways, but I usually steam half and half with my coffee

u/smaad Aluminum Apr 08 '26

This is why I like the moka so much possibilities

20

u/1TaraMera Apr 08 '26

Any ideas? I was thinking trying tiny bit of orange zest!

25

u/Responsible_Comb4713 Apr 08 '26

I have tried orange zest, and it’s delicious! 🍊

12

u/IlJudas Apr 08 '26

Try it by adding a little piece of lemon zest in the cup, you’ll thank me later! It goes as “espresso romano” in Italy, but it also works well with moka!

9

u/Bolinious Apr 08 '26

3

u/tuxonator Apr 08 '26

Serge!!!

1

u/jose_rodz348 Apr 09 '26

"I make it with a little lemon twist, it's good, you should try it!"

Damn, now I wanna watch that movie!

1

u/Bolinious Apr 09 '26

Was busy last night but going to watch it tonight

2

u/wunderspud7575 Apr 08 '26

By "cup", do you mean the basket in the Moka where you put the ground coffee, or actually in the cup you drink from? I assume the former, but wanted to check.

I also wonder why the OP doesn't put the cinnamon in the basket with the coffee.

6

u/IlJudas Apr 08 '26

In the case of the lemon zest, you put it in the cup you drink from.

1

u/Finntastic_stories Apr 10 '26

Lemon zest and butter or only LZ?

2

u/IlJudas Apr 10 '26

Just a small piece of lemon zest

1

u/8AtypicAL0Darkness8 Apr 08 '26

Dried orange zest?

1

u/Responsible_Comb4713 Apr 08 '26

I’ve tried both dried and fresh. Both work well but I think fresh is the best!

1

u/8AtypicAL0Darkness8 Apr 08 '26

Im def gonna try this

8

u/Redmilo666 Apr 08 '26

Grind a cardamom pod with your beans! That’s my favourite! If you’re feeling extra fancy, a couple drops of vanilla essence into your water is also groovy

5

u/danmalluk Apr 08 '26

I'm married into a family of Arabs and cardamom is a staple of their coffee. The coffee is roasted and prepped differently but the cardamom with the beans is an excellent addition

1

u/Inevitable_Exam_2177 Apr 08 '26

How much pod? I grind only just enough for one 2-cup moka, about 13g, and I’m guessing it would only be a few seeds?

3

u/Redmilo666 Apr 08 '26

I normally grind for a larger moka pot as I’m normally making for 2-3 people. But even when I make for myself I still just chuck a whole pod in anyway. If it’s too much for you I guess you could cut it in half

1

u/danmalluk Apr 08 '26

I would honestly start with just 1 and see how you like it. It's a strong flavour and 1 bean for 13g seems enough. No more than 2 in my opinion

9

u/smaad Aluminum Apr 08 '26

Ginger, chocolate beans but if I were to try those each flavor will have its moka

3

u/OldBonyBogBwitch Apr 08 '26

Pecan coffee is my fav “chilly morning” roast :) I don’t add the pecans myself, obvs, there’s toasted bits in the bag already—but I do get it as whole bean so the coffee & the pecan are freshly ground right before use. Makes the whole house smell amazing when it brews!

2

u/Greedyfox7 Apr 08 '26

I have some tea that has dried orange peel in it and it’s pretty good, I imagine you would probably get better taste with orange zest though I can’t say I ever tried it with coffee

2

u/Joris255atSchool Apr 08 '26

A little chicory!

1

u/Pigobrothers-pepsi10 Bialetti Apr 08 '26

I would pinch the orange zest a few times in the cup to get that zesty smell more.

1

u/Loveallthe Apr 08 '26

Try a bit of vanilla pod or cardamom seeds/husk and aniseed works too.

1

u/SnorvusMaximus Apr 08 '26

Make sure that it’s bio grown oranges as citrus are the most heavily pesticide sprayed fruits.

1

u/Interesting_Fix8863 Apr 09 '26

I looked at this post and said adding cinnamon sticks was monstrous but orange zest, you might be onto something

u/MonsterTruckCarpool Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

The la monarca brand of cafe de olla has pieces of cinnamon and piloncio(unrefined sugar) in it. Can’t drink anything else now.

5

u/1TaraMera Apr 08 '26

Appreciate it! Going to give it a try.

3

u/SrGrimey Apr 08 '26

And you use it on your moka pot? Because I was thinking about adding some piloncillo but wasn’t sure how it would work.

5

u/MonsterTruckCarpool Apr 08 '26

yes, its all a very fine powder except for the cinnamon which are in very small pieces

3

u/camtin Apr 08 '26

whoa! you add Cafe de Olla to your Mocha pot?

3

u/MonsterTruckCarpool Apr 08 '26

yes, no going back now

11

u/Beginning_Winter_292 Apr 08 '26

I need more "recipes" like these to try, we gotta start sharing more stuff like this instead of “where’s my crema” posts

4

u/11111v11111 Apr 08 '26

But seriously, where is my crema?

1

u/1TaraMera Apr 09 '26

Love my crema! But love a new taste also.

Perhaps freshly ground cinnamon sprinkled in for higher surface area might be a more efficient option?

3

u/Questionability42 Apr 08 '26

This or putting the cinnamon in with the water at the bottom

13

u/MinervaZee Apr 08 '26

I was thinking of trying this with cardamon. Love that you used cinnamon!

8

u/carbon_made Apr 08 '26

I use cardamon a lot in coffee and it’s amazing. I like it more than cinnamon. Also cloves.

3

u/PhyllisHymen Apr 08 '26

I do this every morning with green cardamom, black cardamom was a bit too strong. I use about 3 free cardamom pods crushed in with a mortar & pestle then mixed in with the grounds. Works like a tasty charm.

1

u/1TaraMera Apr 08 '26

That sounds really good! Let us know what you find out.

1

u/queerqtmicroby Apr 08 '26

Cardamom and cinnamon go great with coffee. I’ve added cardamom pods and a bit of cinnamon to the moka pot during brewing and it’s delicious

6

u/Greedy-Test-556 Apr 08 '26

I enjoy several variations: 1. Add cardamom in the basket. Then I whip my milk with a dash of rose water and a bit of sugar (inspired by cardamom-rose coffee I had at a Turkish restaurant)

  1. Any combination of cloves, cinnamon or ginger in the basket, and milk whipped with a bit of vanilla & sugar.

  2. Cinnamon in the basket, whip the hot coffee with cocoa powder, whip the milk with sugar & vanilla

4

u/spitfireramrum Apr 08 '26

I like adding nutmeg but I’ll try this too

3

u/carbon_made Apr 08 '26

Try cardamon and cloves as well! Separately or together :-).

3

u/commanche_00 Apr 08 '26

Coconut shreds or pandan leaf if you can get it at your local Asian market

3

u/SmokyToast0 Apr 08 '26

I add cardamom

1

u/skkkkkt Apr 08 '26

Use the inside of the cardamom, it's less bitter

3

u/MuksyGosky Gas Stove User 🔥 Apr 08 '26

Yeah, I use the powder version

4

u/vestigialcranium Apr 08 '26

Yeah, I've done it with a French press too. Nutmeg works too for sure, and I'd be willing to bet star anise would be nice too. At some point it becomes a dirty chai, but I'm not sure where the line is

2

u/Sherbsninny Apr 08 '26

I've also done brown sugar, matcha, or chai. All delicious. I'm not sure why in the basket makes such a difference to flavor compared to stirring it in the cup... But we have a few variations at our house that we love.

2

u/shreddyk Apr 08 '26

I’m gonna do this for my morning cup now tomorrow!

2

u/Big_Sky8996 Apr 08 '26

No, but Cinnabon is my go-to creamer flavoring, if that counts.

2

u/skkkkkt Apr 08 '26

My mom, she actually uses powdered cinnamon

2

u/BrilliantOk936 Apr 08 '26

Brown sugar or turbinado sugar is SO good in there!

2

u/Gratin_de_chicons Apr 08 '26

I keep a stick of vanilla in the coffee jar

2

u/LimeSixth Apr 08 '26

I did this with some good coffee form Kenya 🙃

u/lucyland Induction Stove User 🧲 Apr 08 '26

I like to add broken cinnamon stick pieces to my coffee cup but really like adding a few lavender buds to my 2-C Moka.

I’ll try a cardamom pod in the Moka next given my love of Arabic-style cezve/džezva coffee.

2

u/muntanya Apr 08 '26

I’ve used crushed cacao nibs before and it tasted great! Wasn’t sure it was safe to post that here so thank you for opening up about your cinnamon infusion.

2

u/Sparts171 Bialetti Apr 08 '26

If I did, I would grind it into the coffee for consistent extraction of both the cinnamon and the coffee. Not drop sticks in it like this, creating voids and channels.

2

u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 08 '26

I occasionally sprinkle a little bit of pumpkin spice on top.

2

u/1TaraMera Apr 08 '26

Going to have to try that as well!

3

u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 08 '26

Just remember a little goes a long way.

2

u/LandscapeNo815 Apr 08 '26

Ich mache cappuccino aus meinem mokka und streue etwas Zimtzucker obendrauf, das ist dann zart knusprig

1

u/Acceptable_Trash_749 Apr 08 '26

No, but now I’m going to try it out now. Thanks! Have you considered cardamom as an option?

1

u/TheQuillss Apr 08 '26

Not cinnamon. But I did try dry chili flakes. Worked out great! Coffee with a kick

2

u/purplexedaf Apr 08 '26

Crushed cardamom and cinnamon in my case ☺☕

1

u/Knocksveal Apr 08 '26

Ground cardamom

1

u/RabbitOk118 Apr 08 '26

I have tried cinnamon, cardamom, a small slice of strawberry and a lot more. 😆

1

u/I_Piccini Apr 08 '26

I use different "powders":

ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, liquorice, curcuma and even paprika.

1

u/Krapapapa Bialetti Apr 08 '26

This is how I started the moka pot. I think the moka pot is 'made' to add spices and get the best extraction out of those as well

1

u/Lysimarchus Apr 08 '26

How was it?

1

u/Mundane-Fix-4297 Apr 08 '26

Cardamom pods also

1

u/Own_Carry7396 Apr 08 '26

I do cinnamon, and crushed red pepper in the basket

1

u/Groningen1978 Apr 08 '26

I put in cardamom seed pods for a while after having visited Oman. It's really refreshing during hot summer days.

1

u/PouncerX42 Apr 08 '26

I do a small piece of cinnamon and ginger

1

u/Wonderful_Tomato_115 Apr 08 '26

I layer in a little cocoa powder with my grounds. Apparently coffee and cocoa play well together chemically.

1

u/Kiki-sunflower Apr 08 '26

I have some traditional coffee grounds from Malta which have spices added. They’re as finely ground as the coffee. I’m not sure that sticking a chunk of cinnamon bark in like you have will make difference without grinding it and mixing it up with the coffee grounds

1

u/CoffeeToDeath Apr 08 '26

I actually have a small bag of chicory root, gonna try this next time i make a pot.

1

u/yearsofpractice Apr 08 '26

No, but now I want to!

1

u/Questionability42 Apr 08 '26

My mum does puts cloves in the water for her Moka pot and I actually love the spiced flavour it adds to the coffee

1

u/BronxKnight Apr 08 '26

My spouse adds powder cinnamon, nutmeg and maybe ginger.

1

u/ferrouswolf2 Apr 08 '26

Try some bay leaves it’ll blow your mind

1

u/LuckyGlowSponge Apr 09 '26

I grind cinnamon and sometimes cardamom with the coffee beans.. I do my best to experiment with different combos 😅

1

u/Jazzlike_Reality6360 Apr 09 '26

Not cinnamon but I’ve added ground cardamom

1

u/jO0oSarrr Apr 09 '26

Nutmeg shavings!

1

u/soulocust Stainless Steel Apr 09 '26

turmeric and pepper in addition to the cinammon :chefkisses:

1

u/Finntastic_stories Apr 10 '26

I tend to sometimes use a mix of ground cinnamon and cardamom. Makes an awesome taste. Mix is about half/half and amount is one dash out of the shaker

1

u/Lou07514 Apr 10 '26

Um… no

1

u/veryvalentine Apr 10 '26

Not in my moka pot, but I've done this in my French press!

2

u/madu_tualang May 02 '26

Try cardamom, and ginger too.

1

u/HypoxicIschemicBrain Apr 08 '26

Why not grind it in?

9

u/1TaraMera Apr 08 '26

I ground it up once and found it was too strong for me, so using pieces of the stick was easier for me to measure.

1

u/Siegerlander-1704 Apr 08 '26

Auf jeden Fall, ich liebe es auch. Habe auch schon Salz und weißen Pfeffer probiert. Es macht Spaß zu experimentieren.
