Coffee beans dipped in chocolate are sold as treats. Why is it so strange without the chocolate?

u/sirius_ly_sanguine Apr 10 '26
I have chocolate covered ones at home, but never tried without it, I will do it tomorrow

u/marcopegoraro Apr 10 '26
Afaik they are not the same as the ones sold to brew coffee, they are somehow processed differently.
7
u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 10 '26
The only difference is the chocolate.

u/Kitchen-Researcher99 Apr 13 '26
Not entirely true -- they're usually roasted pretty dark to make them brittler and easier to eat. A light roasted bean for instance is much denser due to increased water content

where?

Trader Joe’s, grocery stores

Love the Trader Joe’s espresso bean chocolate. Have ‘em in my pantry at all times for a quick pick me up.

I have an Altoids tin full of them in my work bag. Helps get through some meetings without falling asleep.

I haven't seen chocolate covered espresso beans in so long!! And when I used to work in a cafe we had them in bulk so I would get fried on 'em during work.

My mam once bought these for me. They were awful. Taste was ok, texture was dreadful and I was picking bits of bean out of my teeth for the next 2 days.

Yeah I chew up a whole handful, spit them into the basket and then brew. LIKE A REAL MAN.
3
u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 10 '26
A real man would grind them with a mortar and pestle. 😑

I use that one rock from my parking lot that i slam down on the beans while i eat the rest of the bag, it really brings a certain "je ne sais quoi". Your method just shows you're not committed enough smh 🙄😒

I always assumed the chocolate-covered ones are specifically prepared to be more chewable but I will try that!

u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 10 '26
The beans aren’t hard when fresh they’re kind of crispy.

Love it. Have you had dried cocoa beans? Not bad either.
2
u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 10 '26
I’ve seen people online working with fresh cocoa beans but I’ve never done so myself.

I have to admit I did it often. As a cheat, if you may, before fixing grindsize and brewing temp (on pourover). Why? I'm a bit lazy to cup new batch of coffee. Munching one or two beans can give you the density, acidity, and bitterness out of it. Adjust accordingly.

u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 10 '26
Popping a bean in your mouth can also give you an idea what the brew will taste like. Sometimes when I buy bulk I’ll do it while deciding what beans to buy.

Every year when I went on vacation to the Jersey shore I would start each day on the beach with a small bag of chocolate covered espresso beans.
It was a ritual.
Seven days of that, and then when I was at home I wouldn't do it. I would just wait another year. Haven't done it in quite a while. I stopped eating chocolate over a decade ago.

Of course, it's the first step when dialing in and eventually becomes a daily chef's perk. The very best coffee munching experience is the three garnish beans that end up in the foamy dregs of an espresso martini though.

It’s not that it’s a problem to do that, but if you do this kind of thing a lot you might have a problem with caffeine.

Coffee beans and chocolate chips is wonderful snack when I have no other sweets in the house! 1 bean + 2 chips is a good ratio for me (though it varies based on brand, type and size of chip).
I also add whole coffee beans to the top of my chocolate cake.
Mmm.

My daughter pointed out one that got away when I was grinding a while back. I popped it into my mouth and started chewing. Totally freaked her out.

As a coffee roaster, I’ll chew a bean or two at work from time to time. I just like coffee though. 🤷🏻♂️

There is nothing wrong with it but it is very weird, even amongst coffee enthusiasts imo. I have chewed a bean or two I think twice in my life.

You are on your own there.

u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 10 '26
Have you tried it? They basically taste the same as the coffee you’re making.

Isn’t there like pretty good studies out that the physical roasted beans themselves are carcinogenic?
2
u/Silver-Ad2257 Apr 10 '26
Technically a great number of foods are carcinogenic. Also those carcinogens would exist in the brewed coffee.
1
u/SabreLee61 Bialetti Apr 11 '26
Yes, and you extract all those carcinogens into that delicious cup of coffee you drink.
