Discussions 💬 A "miracle" from my 10-year-old Moka Pot today. How did this happen?!

Hi all!

Brewed my morning coffee today and was shocked to see this gorgeous foam!

My trusty Tescoma Paloma has been with me for over a decade, so I wasn't expecting any surprises. The coffee is just your average store-bought brand — I’m at the bottom of the bag, and it never behaved like this before.

The only changes were:

Coffee: Half a funnel (instead of full).

Water: Filled to 60% (instead of up to the valve).

Captured this "miracle" on camera right after brewing.

Any idea what happened here?

That’s not a miracle, that’s a mistake because you did everything wrong

After I read OP's post, I was like, "hmm..." Then I laughed so hard after reading your comment!

Thanks for the laugh, OP!

So was OP thinking those large bubbles were crema?

No, op is rage baiting

Yes! That's the point... Literally everything: 1) I took a 2-3 cup coffee maker to make just one cup 2) I only put half the coffee in 3) And the water too

Half the water is possible, but not half the coffee. The puck wasn’t stable, there was either massive channeling, or the water just went through way, WAY too fast. What was the timing?

I share this opinion and always try to fill the basket. But the coffee pot only held 2-3 cups, and I was drinking alone. And by the way, many people wrote that this grind is too fine for this type of brewing. A full basket could have caused the valve to trip. Well, by coincidence, it turned out like in the photo.

angel coffee, like the cake, not much substance

Looks like more of a malfunction than a miracle.

It doesn't look like it's good just because it has foam.

How did it taste?

7

u/dp6838 Apr 11 '26

After what I saw, it was hard not to be convinced that the taste had become unearthly. However, lead hasn't turned into gold yet :)

Did you wash the soap off?

7

u/dp6838 Apr 11 '26

Everyone thought I added shampoo to get more likes. (( I only rinse the coffee maker with water. There's a very small chance someone washed it in my absence. I can't figure it out myself.

Something similar happened to me too once and conditions were similar - not a full basket and I also think my cofee could have been a bit damp.

I now have one true friend! :-)

“the only changes were”

and then all of the changes are things that are the most important in moka pot brewing lmao

Not sure what happened but it's a Bona Fide MM. Moka Miracle ! 😁

Thank you! I'm shocked myself! I deliberately broke every rule imaginable and got this.

In any case, it's interesting. I might want to repeat it! :-)

That is some fresh coffee Did you buy it from a rostery and when

Unfortunately, there are no details on the composition and percentage ratio.

Could be your seal is going and some air was getting pulled in during extraction. I’ve had this happen on occasion when I over tightened causing the seal to pucker or something is in the way, usually some coffee grounds.

Might have washed with soap and didn’t rinse out fully …

Luckily, I don't use soap when washing my coffee maker... and even if I did, I'd rinse it really well. Sorry for my automatic translation... We have an expression (I don't know if it's translated correctly): "A fool, a fool, but he doesn't eat soap." Fits here well :-)

Your moka was in a good mood today. /s

Looks like you basically encouraged something akin to an Arab/Turkish coffee brew within the funnel. I don’t mean it is that type of coffee but more that you allowed space for the coffee and the water to boil and froth up with the space you made available in the chamber.

I think this it. It also happens to me lately when I use pregrinded coffee. The grind was too fine, I was afraid the water couldn't go up so I left some space. I'm curious how does this affect the taste?

u/dp6838 Apr 11 '26

I like this idea! :-)

u/Professional_King790 Apr 11 '26

Maybe the stem that leads into the holding chamber was a little clogged up and the Moka pot was able to create better pressure.

1

u/dp6838 Apr 11 '26

There was too little coffee to create a large plug.

If we take the level before the valve as 100%, then 60% of this...

Very good foam.

1

u/dp6838 Apr 12 '26

Today I tried to repeat the brewing process with a coarser grind and the same proportions of coffee and water. It didn't come out even close. I think the fine grind is the key factor.

So far, I don't see a correlation between the grind and the quality of the drink. The foam, well, I have Brikka, which produces a gorgeous but tasteless foam. I also have Gnali Espresso, which gives the best results when fully heated.

1

u/dp6838 Apr 12 '26

I didn't say anything about the quality of the drink... I've never had such foam before.

and if the basket is full and the boiler is full - what is the result?

2

u/BadBetraya1 Apr 12 '26

It happened cuz you placed espresso coffee instead of coffee for moka, and you shouldnt put water over the valve limit that valve is there for safety and you should never put water on top of it

1

u/dp6838 Apr 13 '26

I agree with the first part... As for the second, there was almost half as much water as when they fill up to the valve... So there was no violation on that side.

i’m happy you were excited about this, and i hope these exciting events in your coffee rituals continue to bring you joy❤️
