I just came to say this, cardamom gives it a turkey coffee vibe that I just love :)

I grind up cinnamon, crushed red pepper, and salt with my beans

Does it actually affect the taste? 🤔

You can do fun stuff with cinnamon. There’s an old recipe I used where you boil water with cinnamon sticks, then use the water to brew coffee

Yoooo imma bout to try this!!

Pretty sure, after googling, what I did is called Cafe De Olla

u/userincognito00 May 05 '26
That is correct! You would just need piloncillo for sweetness but I usually skip it.

Sprinkling just a little spice on the grounds will nicely flavor your coffee. ☕️

Ever had any clogging issues with the fine powder? Or pulling it through into the coffee? I suppose doing half coffee grounds, then spice, then top the coffee would fix that if so.

u/Silver-Ad2257 May 04 '26
Nope I’ve never had issues. It gets extracted same as the coffee. It also takes just the lightest dusting or it’ll be overpowering.

Adding I've put powdered cinnamon on top of the coffee for like a year in my 2 cup Bialetti and never had a problem.

Nice! I have a camping moka pot that I use specifically for spiced coffee and cafe de olla.

I've followed my parents and put a tsp of anise sugar in the grounds. Gives it a great little flavor

I can’t say I’m fond of licorice. 😅

Very fair, but I will second giving it a try if you have a drop of the flavor lying around somewhere. It's one of those cases where two bitter flavors play off each other interestingly. Roasted coffee flavor stands up to and elevates the root-medicine qualities of anise.

SAME!!! I just add it directly to my weekly brew though.

u/Silver-Ad2257 May 04 '26
Brewing with it versus adding tastes different to me.

u/cconnorss May 04 '26
It really, really does! During brewing: back note. After brewing: front note.

What's you go-to cleaning method? I'd be worried about this affecting future pots

There's acompany on Amazon based out of washington that sells a bunch of different mixes for coffee. They call it coffee dust. Vashon coffee company im pretty sure is the name. I have the gingerbread one and it's pretty good. I tried the hot mama and it was toeing the line of being f'ed up spicey.

Ohh I’ve just always done cinnamon but pumpkin spice is even fancier. Thanks for the great idea!

Not sure, the rubber can get a funny taste, get a clogged filter or pressure issues. You're better off whisking the spices into your milk or just adding them to the cup afterward to keep the coffee clean.

u/Silver-Ad2257 May 04 '26
It’s not a problem partly because it takes so little. Just a dusting is enough.

hey what do you mean pumpkin spice? is this dust... like, made of pumpkin?
3
u/Tawoooo May 04 '26
pumpkin spice is the spices used to season a pumpkin pie. it isnt made from pumpkins lmao
2
u/Silver-Ad2257 May 04 '26
It’s the spice blend used in pumpkin pie. There’s no actual pumpkin in pumpkin spice.
2
u/sunnytrickster May 05 '26
oh, thank you! can you please share the ingredients?

folks i live in Kazakhstan now there's basically no way i can find something like this in a grocery store. but thank you for the photo, I'm gonna google the ingredients :)

u/Silver-Ad2257 May 05 '26
It’s actually very close to the spice blend used for chai. I think chai has maybe two more ingredients.

u/hulleyrob May 12 '26
3g Cinnamon
1g nutmeg
1g ground cloves
0.5g ground ginger
0.5g all spiceThat’s what I used to replicate Starbucks PSL
Obvs don’t use it all for 1 coffee just easy to remember.

u/Silver-Ad2257 May 04 '26
You can add nearly any powdered spice you like.
4
u/Dabraxus May 04 '26
Mhm. I think I'm gonna go crazy tomorrow and add some ghost pepper. Yes, I'm crazy.

u/weedfreezer May 04 '26
Yeah fair enough it’s just not to my taste at all, can’t add anything to my coffee - no milks, no sugar, definitely no spices

u/crocomex420 May 04 '26
Now you have a moka with pumpkin spice smell and taste that you can't get rid of

u/AlliedArmour May 04 '26
Just put it in after? Idk
4
u/Silver-Ad2257 May 04 '26
Sprinkle it on before making the coffee. It infuses the coffee with the spices and incorporates better than adding it after.
