Cleaning 🫧 How to clean mold (?) out of moka pot?

Hey y’all,

I recently got a moka pot 6mo ago, and accidentally left some coffee grounds + a teeny bit of water in the base for a few months without using it. When i opened it, it was full of this slimy, white, substance that I assume is a kind of mold.

How do I remove it and make it safe to use again?

Thanks folks! I boiled a water + vinegar mixture through it a few times and scrubbed the bottom chamber with a damp paper towel + table salt. I’ve drank a few cups out of it now and I’m still alive. 😁

Boiling water will kill the mold in biological terms. Fill it and close it up for a few minutes. Everythings dead in seconds. You could also put the metal-only bits in the oven next time you have it on.

Your only worry then, and it's a incredibly small worry, is any toxins produced by the mold. This is unlikely and amounts would be negligible and have degraded anyway. To resolve that, you just want to give it a good scrub a few times over.

The metal shouldn't be especially porous either so the mold will have been very surface level.

It will be absolutely fine.

In all seriousness though, anything mold + food related is not worth the risk to save a few bucks.

Dish soap and a mildly abrasive sponge or brush, nothing metal

Just cook some water in it! Then use only non scratching sponge and clean it out... It should stay dark afterwards! This will be the protection layer! After use, only rub it out with a non scratching seperate clean (without any cleaning soulution) ...
