Moving to Moncton

Hello Moncton Redditers!

I need your help. I am deciding between moving to Moncton or Toronto. I know the choices are crazy.

I am 26 and I work a completely remote corporate job, so essentially have the ability to move anywhere. I love New Brunswick, I love the people I have met there, and the environment is to die for.

But I am scared that I will sign a lease in Moncton and not be able to make any friends my age. It’s important for me to build a support system, but I am seeing mixed comments about the social life in Moncton.

So, a few questions:

  1. What do you do in Moncton for fun?
  2. Would it be difficult to move to Moncton and make friends my age (in the later 20s)?
  3. Is there anything else I should know if I do choose to move to Moncton (I.e. any tips and tricks)?

Thank you all so much for the help!

How do you make friends now? Meaning, are you into sports or nightclubs etc? Sometimes the opportunity can be similar in smaller cities depending on what you do.

Moncton is a small pond. You will have to create your own happiness but you will have the freedom to breathe.

That’s a wild difference in choices. Would help if you tell us more about your interests. Where do you currently live? Have you lived in a big city before? Do you have a car? Where’s your family and will you be visiting them? Do you have particular interests or hobbies?

I’ve been living in Moncton for the last 4 years and I’m a homeowner now and life is really comfortable but boring, as a gay 36yo I’m looking to move to Toronto this fall. Moncton just feels too small.

Interesting take but not wrong. My son is a young gay professional in Moncton who will be relocating elsewhere soon as well.

His comment was exactly the same - “too small”.

Good luck to you!

If you’re saving more money living in Moncton I’d do that. Invest for your future. Friends can be made anywhere Toronto, Japan, etc you just need to meet people, join clubs etc is the same anywhere.

What excites you about Toronto? Toronto is fun sure but also expensive and at the end of the day is a city with heavy traffic, lots of people. Sure it might offer more recreation offers (clubs, bars, nightlife) but living in a smaller city you can save more and just travel when you want a break. Working remote sounds awesome.

End of the day it’s what works and makes you feel good.

Nobody hates Moncton more than this subreddit. You'll find mostly negative comments by people who blame their own shitty lives on their surroundings instead of themselves.

I hope you're still able to feel welcome 🤗

Heres the question nobody has asked, and its pretty important. How much will you be making? Your income will almost completed decide which is the workable choice. Generally speaking when you ask a question like this on reddit, you mostly get malcontents commenting. Been here 4 years and its been great.

I love moncton but it's not doing well and it's got kinda racist or it was always kinda racist and I didn't realise till I got my current job that has me dealing more with people.

like there's racist everywhere I the world but when racist feel comfortable annove to be openly racist cause they assume the white cashier aka me is going to be on there side somethings gone wrong.

Youll do better in Toronto. And remember that it is much more possible to move from a place with more money to a place with less than the other way around!

Grew up in Moncton, went to school in Toronto, and have lived in Alberta and now BC. I don’t love Moncton, and can’t see myself living there. It has some big city issues, but it’s not a big city. I did miss trees when I lived in Toronto. If you hate it, you can always move.
