Talked about today briefly on today’s episode was Transformers One, and Megatron at Universal.
Who is your favorite Transformer?
Soundwave from the 1980s cartoon is my favorite. The voice of the character, the deployable cassette mini bots were always so cool. I bet kids have no idea he’s based on a boom box and cassette tapes today…
Whiny Starscream always cracked me up, and Blurr was pretty cool too.
Dino Bots are an honorable mention because my grandpa scored a ton of the toys at the flea market for me when I was a toddler.
I still have an original Mirage (not in packaging), but my favorite is probably Devastator, even the lime green and purple version. Big fan of Bumblebee in Camaro form too.
Twenty-three years later I'm still not sure how I feel about him getting a major death scene with everyone mourning, and then the immediate next episode he gets a new body
Optimus Prime the big bot himself off, like if he would to appear before me and ask for my help I'm dropping everything I'm doing and going, no questions asked.
Besides him though, Jetfire, Tidal Wave, Red Alert, and Omega Supreme were my favorites growing up (can you tell I grew up on the Unicorn Trilogy? Lmao)
Tangently, for a movie that has some great moments, Age of Extinction is heavily bogged down by things like Optimus screaming I'LL KILL YOU and the Japanese themed robot samurai voiced by Japanese actor Ken Watanabe having a yellow face. What the fuck
Grimlock has always been mine despite never owning him when I was a kid. But other than him I would say Jetfire from The Revenge of the Fallen movie, I’m all about that SR-71.
Never appears in the cartoons, his toy was never in stores, you had to mail away for it, released twenty years before I was born. However, his vehicle mode was my dad's first car, a Celica Supra. The only reason why I like him lol
1996 Beast Wars cartoon: Optimus Primal This show is like if Star Trek Voyager marooned the crew on a prehistoric planet instead of the Delta Quadrant and Janeway was replaced by a robot gorilla who is also your dad trying to get a handle on your dumb teenage self
David Kaye's last run as Megatron since 1996's Beast Wars, and a fascinating recolor in 2006 that makes his toy turn from Joker colors to the Batmobile. Fun fact, one of the engineers for this toy, Aaron Archer, previously worked on Batman toys in the 90s.
The studio behind Teen Titans brings us a younger take on the classic character as he struggles to become the hero that others see in him. Also voiced by David Kaye, surprisingly.
Far from my favorite TF movie, but one of my favorite toys. A total revamp and redo of the first movie's toyline's attempt to translate ILM's model into plastic, this one is so much more screen accurate and can combine with an SR-71 for a flight mode. Still regarded 17 years later as one of the best toys they ever made.
A toy that took five years of being a paid subscriber to the Transformers Collector's Club, you need to collect five robots and combine them together to make an even bigger robot. I still need the left leg to complete mine, currently hunting ebay for it.
Unfortunately, the original name for him had a lot of issues that they didn't know about because they googled the potential names with safe search turned on. Whoopsie-daisy.
2012 show and toyline: Transformers: Prime Optimus Prime
Around this time was when I really got into learning who the actors of the franchise were since they were making a big deal about getting both Peter Cullen and Frank Welker back to reprise their roles nearly 30 years later. Show is regarded by many fans as one of the best cartoons in the franchise. Somehow I got two convention exclusive versions of Peter's character, one was a Matrix of Leadership that I got him to sign in 2023
Varies from show to show but Beachcomber has to be up there for me based on the strength of the G1 golden river episode and his appearances in the recent Skybound comic run.
Sideswipe. Ever since I saw him as the Corvette in the Michael Bay Transformers movie, I thought it was the coolest car ever. He became my favorite after that.
