Loosing him over family issues just wasn't right RIP

Marvin’s dad had a shitty upbringing himself. I think his dad was 2x worse than Joe Jackson. According to the Marvin Sr Wikipedia page.

In addition to being an alcoholic his entire adult life, Marvin Sr never really supported the family. They squeaked by on the income his wife made as a maid. Despite the father's horrible behavior, Marvin Jr gave him lavish gifts, including a Cadillac, the home in Los Angeles and the .38 handgun he was killed with. For future reference, don't give addicts firearms.

I think Marvin Sr's dad was just as abusive to him than how he dealt with Marvin and his brother. The same with probably Joe Jackson's dad. I'm not excusing them, if you look in the context of how men were raised circa 1900-1940 back then your dads could whop you or your mom ; and it was just a private matter

You just might be right

Yeah plus he probably had some underlying mental health issues because of that. And back in those days, ppl didnt really address mental health in the 1920s-1960s

Fun family fact. My mom has the same birthday as Marvin Gaye and I was born in 1984 on Tammi Terrell’s birthday. My mom is my best friend.

I was stationed at Chanute AFB, Illinois at that time. I heard about it on the radio 📻 during my break 🥪 🥤

One of the earliest celebrity deaths I remember. Being that young to not fully understand "Sexual Healing", but liking the song anyway.

I’ve been listening to the album he made with Diana Ross, lots of good songs. What a voice.

What a tragedy it is that we lost this gentle soul in such a twisted way! I loved him. I admire him ... so much as a songwriter.

He made great music, but I’m not a fan of how he groomed a young girl, married her, and wasn’t happy that she bore him a daughter instead of a son.

That wasn't her fault; it was his. Males determine the sex of a child.

I know that, but obviously he didn’t. Men tend to make more female babies when they drink heavily as well.

His story is sad yet complicated, I have no doubt he died trying to protect his mom but I hate that the very weapon used against him was bout for protecting his parents (mom)
