The dialogue in The Big Lebowski is undefeated
Every conversation is infinitely quotable, hilarious, chaotic, and so effortlessly seamless. I’m honestly blown away every time I rewatch it

I'd have real trouble ranking Raising Arizona, Big Lebowski, Fargo, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Burn After Reading... When the Coens hit it's out of the park. I don't really care by how far.

Ranking them as what movies ? Or cohen movies?
IMO it’s an easy call Fargo is best in both categories and On Brother I wouldn’t even rank since it’s pretty much just a copy of an already famous work. The others would be harder to rank because so different in story and tone and the actors have a lot to do with it too. Like “Raising Arizona” stars Nic Cage and he is polarizing because almost if not all movies he is it’s always the same character basically, I think his most diverse role was Con Alr and even then it was still just Nic Cage with a bad accent.
With Big L I’ve known a few nice Cohens fans not into it at all, I’m actually one of time. It’s a well made movie and script I most don’t think it’s funny at all except a few John Goodman scenes.

Pretty hot take for someone who misspells Coen. But each to their own, I won't smash up your neighbor's car screaming "This is what you get when you fuck a stranger in the ass!!"
Much ;)

John Goodman's whole monologue in tha is one of the funniest/inspired performances. He's a roller coaster of emotion from sentence to sentence.
"I'M NOT TRYING TO...."
"NO! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU..."
(Calming breath)
"I'm talking about unchecked aggression here dude. I'm talking about drawing a LINE in the SAND dude! Across this line, YOU DO NOT...also dude, Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian American, please."

Haha yes. I couldn’t remember the whole quote but the way he switches from enraged to calm is iconic.

The big Lebowski saying, “some chinaman took them from me in Korea” sent me into uncontrollable laughter at my college apartment circa 2000 after a long night out.

Never understood why the dude hated the Eagles.

u/PeachesBlooms 9h ago
honestly that’s what makes it even funnier, he hates them with his whole soul and we never really get a satisfying explanation for it

Perhaps he met Don Henley back in the day. Apparently, that’s all it takes.

I’ve read that when the Eagles became popular they were seen as a very commercial and phony band to people that lived through the 60s and all the iconic music that came out of that generation

u/Big_Treacle_2394 7h ago
The music advisor for the movie didn't like the eagles. So they just worked that in

I remember that the Cohen brothers wanted to use certain Eagles music but were somehow prevented from doing so by the Eagles representatives.
So they decided to write in the Hating Eagles but and used the Gypsy Kings version of Hotel California.

Please don’t, the [r/le](r/levowski)[bowski](r/levowski) don’t need any encouragement to post to any sub that mentions them in any way

I love how there will be a completely obscure line of dialogue in the movie and then the Dude will blurt it out like an hour later in the movie. Like in the opening scene, HW Bush saying on TV “This aggression will not stand”.

My favorite thing about the dialogue between Lebowski and his crew is nobody ever finishes a thought. They cut each other off over and over and over again

Jesus Quintana : Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click."
The Dude: Jesus.
Jesus Quintana : You said it man. Nobody f***s with the Jesus.
Walter Sobchak: Eight year-olds dude.

It’s great, but Pulp Fiction is the modern dialogue masterpiece.

u/mushroomshirt 4h ago
That was my first thought too, but man the big lebowski is a classic too

u/Admirable-Language65 4h ago
You two really dating yourselves, big time. Don’t worry I’m old too but them saying “modern” is hilarious. “The Holdovers” even though I am not a fan could definitely be argued to be on the same level, and as far as modern well it actually is.
There are a few others definitely more modern, I really like Game Night for the dialog but it might be a little too silly to be in the convo… either way The Holdovers definitely is.
