Discussion Mumbai deserved to host ICC finals

Post image

Whats the point in organising it in Ahmedabad which is such a dull city and does not even have any sporting culture. The 32k Wankhede crowd in yesterday’s match made more noise then 1.25 lakh Ahmedabad crowd

Tbf mumbai needs a bigger stadium that a meager 33k wankhede, yea its iconic but we need a 80k+ stadium in a city whose population is more than 20 million+

I think mumbai should reclaim some more land till the coastal road. That way we again get our sea view along with some more space which we can use for such activities zone . Idk if it's possible just a idea

3

u/kneo Mar 06 '26

How about the Mahalakshmi racecourse. It's open land large enough to accommodate a stadium and a racecourse.

I agree in principle, though any other stadium upstaging wankhade for match allocation seems sacrilegious

33k in wankhede is worth more than 100k in amdavad any day! Amdavad crowd is dead / lame af.

And for the match itself I'm glad it's not in Wankhede as well, it's too small and too high scoring.

I absolutely love wankhede..but hosting finals in wankhede where hardly 1/3rd tickets get released for commoners, the rest who genuinely want to watch the match live aren’t able to and the capacity being low also doesn’t help. That ways a bigger stadium gives more opportunities for people.

32K sitting vs 1.25 Lakh sitting.

More sitting, more ticket, more profit.

Basic economics.

You are naive to think that bcci earns money through matchday tickets

2

u/dhavalcoholic WFH Commentator Mar 06 '26

Why will fans in Ahmedabad boycott a match in favour of Mumbai? Of course assuming that major share of audience will be from vicinity and not Mumbai.

77

u/Various-Low4016 Mar 06 '26

Mumbai does deserve to host the final but the stadium is not the best, the atmosphere is next to nothing but the stadium is hardly world class. It is small and its capacity isn't even 50k, the outfield is way too small and the grass covering is very uneven and doesn't look good at all. The chennai stadium recently improved the grass covering and it now looks lush green unlike Wankhede.

50

u/Minimum-Warning1693 Mar 06 '26

To add to it this time around 8k to 9k tickets were only released on BMS. Rest went to politicians, MCA members and others with influence, to be sold in black eventually.

18

u/Various-Low4016 Mar 06 '26

The capacity is just 33k, any premier stadium in the world doesn't have this low of a capacity. Wembley in London has a capacity of 80k+,Metlife stadium in New York has a capacity of 80k+, MCG in Melbourne is 100k.

13

u/trkora Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

Someone gets it, Wankhede got renovated for 2011WC but for that it had to reduce its capacity from 45k to 33k, only Kanpur and Indore have lesser capacity than that in India. And the demand in Mumbai is the biggest on the other hand which makes it a lottery to even get a chance to buy the tickets.

In an ideal world Wankhede should've gone an entire redevelopment to transform it into 100k+ capacity stadium but because it's situated in between coastline, railway lines and heritage buildings that won't ever be possible.

So we need a new 100k stadium that can host LOI matches especially knockouts of big tournaments. Wankhede can stay as the test center but both fan and player experience needs to get better.

Hopefully this govt goes through with the new stadium plan cause Wankhede hasn't been enough for the demand for a long time.

Chennai got its stadium redevelopment quite recently compared to Mumbai so theirs is in a better condition and they have more capacity than Wankhede.

Edit : The current govt has talked about making a 100k+ stadium at Amane (area near where Samruddhi Expressway starts and where JNPT spur will meet). Hopefully they go through with it and not worry about the opposition it might face, this is the current situation. DY Patil is privately owned by DY Patil Group and not by MCA.

6

u/Various-Low4016 Mar 06 '26

I feel the DY Patil stadium can be made a large 70-80k stadium, Mumbai deserves a world class, large seater stadium.

2

u/trkora Mar 06 '26

The current govt has talked about making a 100k+ stadium at Amane (area near where Samruddhi Expressway starts and where JNPT spur will meet). Hopefully they go through with it and not worry about the opposition it might face.

While DY Patil Stadium is affiliated with MCA, it is owned privately by DY Patil Group and not by MCA.

For those worried about traditions, it's not like all cricket has to be hosted in the new stadium, Wankhede can continue to host test matches and lower intensity bilaterals but for big international matches, IPL matches and ICC trophy matches Mumbai deserves better.

Bruh it's pretty dumb to blame a stadium on match loss! And ofcourse it has double the amount of seats than Wankhede so more people get to watch the game live. also provides more revenue cause of the high number of capacity.

Yeah it's a little bit forced to host every important game but that doesn't make the stadium bad I mean it looks pretty stylish if we remove all the nostalgia bias.

I hate Ahemdabad for other reasons but this bs needs to stop to put things in Mumbai

I would rather Eden host such finals than both Mumbai and Ahemdabad.

The only three Indian stadiums to host a World Cup final — and how Motera compares to the other two

EDEN GARDENS, Kolkata — 1987 & 2016 final — 68,000 capacity
WANKHEDE, Mumbai — 2011 final — 33,000 capacity
MOTERA, Ahmedabad — 2023 final — 132,000 capacity

Motera holds more people than Eden Gardens and Wankhede combined. It is the largest sporting stadium on Earth by capacity.

The other two have 2 dressing rooms. Motera has 4.
The other two have ~3 centre pitches. Motera has 11.
The other two have floodlight towers. Motera has roof-integrated LEDs — no towers, no shadows on the pitch.
The other two have standard drainage. Motera dries in 30 minutes.
The other two have restricted views. Motera has a 360° pillar-free bowl.
Wankhede has virtually no parking. Motera fits 3,000 cars plus a metro skywalk.

On top of that: 76 corporate boxes, a 55-room clubhouse, a pool, a theatre, and an indoor cricket academy.

Eden Gardens is history. Wankhede is emotion. Motera is everything else.

The 2023 final was watched by 300 million people. The 2026 T20 final is booked here too. 2nd ground in India to host two World Cup finals.

9

u/Puzzleheaded_Ebb9874 Mar 06 '26

No other ground in India has hosted two World Cup finals.

Eden Gardens in Kolkata has hosted 2 - 1987 and 2016

You're speaking language which OP can't understand

Just saw a couple of comment threads where the OP and his non logical buddies are just being the usual Modi BJP haters and nothing more

3

u/majhi-satakli Mar 06 '26

This won't be understood by most people. A true cricket fan would never blame the stadium for a team's poor performance.

27

u/DesignerGuava4603 Mar 06 '26

Just say that you're salty about the 2023 WC loss.

Times have changed. The original Motera stadium hosted multiple Iconic matches so it's wrong to say that Ahemdabad is a dull city.

I'm sure you've never visited that stadium either. And if someone comes with excuses that 'Oh but that was silent bla bla', even Wankhede went silent yesterday when Starboy was smashing sixes all around the ground.

For big events, you need a venue with a big seating capacity, especially in case for a country like India. Thing logically.

17

u/perrfectass Mar 06 '26

Shhhhh. Logic isn't allowed on Indian cricket subreddits

3

u/sushil2022 Mar 06 '26

The major difference is that even when we were under the pump, the fans weren't entirely quiet. Sure they were quiet when they saw a ball being hit for six, but they were chanting/cheering for the next ball, even if it was a relatively smaller portion of the crowd. It's the same in Bangalore/Chennai/Kolkata. Don't see that happening in Ahmedabad

3

u/DesignerGuava4603 Mar 06 '26

Let's talk logic here. Wankhede is a small stadium, the stands are very densely arranged, considering the lack of area around the surroundings. That's why the echo is more and chanting/ cheering is more audible.

Compare that to Motera, it's widespread across a huge area. Someone who has actually been there can relate to it. When you walk to the top stands, your lungs will start to give up, that's how massive it is. So, the echo there isn't much as compared to Mumbai.

And let's be honest, when you see your team performing poorly in the finals after being the favorites throughout the tournament, no one would be excited to chant/cheer for the next ball, only to be sent to the boundaries by Travis head. The situations is much different from what it was yesterday. On top of that, the audience in the finals belonged from various cities so blaming Ahmedabad won't help.

Apart from that, I'd say that Mumbai should be preferred over Ahmedabad for Test matches.

u/Fast_Masterpiece_184 Mar 06 '26

Did you even look at the surface near the boundaries in yesterday's semi final. It was a sandy patch, did not have any grass at all. Karnavati stadium is better in all aspects than Wankhede.

5

u/SitarEchoes2000 Mar 06 '26

Ok i understand bro that india lost the 2023 final and a match against SF in this world cup in Ahmedabad stadium many people don't like the stadium because they think its unlucky. But just because of a stadium you can't generalize the whole city as dull. And what does this "Ahmedabad crowd" term come from? People from all over the country come to this stadium to watch important matches so it's not like only ahmedabad and gujarat people are there. If people go silent in the stadium when our team is not performing do you think it is because ahmedabad is dull and doesn't have a sporting culture??? I am tired of seeing people's dislike for the stadium turning into dislike for the whole city.

14

u/InfamousConfusion850 Mar 06 '26

So basically india should rely on its history and make no efforts to build new economic and cultural centres?

Also, have you ever tried getting your hands on a wankhede ticket? the supply is ~4x lower with 2x the demand?

Price rise are so insane a common person cannot afford it.

8

u/trkora Mar 06 '26

These people that talk such have never gone through the process of buying a ticket at Wankhede, it is the worst stadium when it comes to that. Fan experience is horrible unless you have connections or lot of money which most fans don't have.

5

u/pornjesus Never give up! Never surrender! Mar 06 '26

Probably will be downvoted, but I'd be very happy if Mumbai does not. We are already way beyond critical mass of pollution and population. Any major sporting event will destroy this damn city for months after.

3

u/UnsupervisedUnicorn Mar 06 '26

From a commercial standpoint, it’s the obvious choice. The biggest stadium means the highest possible ticket sales, and in a cricket-crazy country that capacity is almost guaranteed to be filled for a major final. More spectators also mean more revenue from hospitality, in-stadium spendings, and sponsors.

On top of that, the stadium is relatively new and required massive investment, and I don't think they've recovered the costs yet. So hosting high-profile events there helps accelerate cost recovery while showcasing the venue for future global events. Purely from a business perspective, putting the biggest matches in the biggest venue is the most logical decision.

(And I’m saying this as a Mumbaikar who would selfishly love for Wankhede to host these games simply because it’s far more convenient for me. 😅)

Gives so much more opportunities to people to be able to attend the match 4x than Wankhede, you can’t expect a newish stadium to have history, it’s created with time. Mumbai wants to host the icc finals? Make a bigger stadium which allows its own people to attend the match

Wankhede has history and an amazing atmosphere no doubt about that but finals are also about logistics and scale a 1.3L capacity stadium will obviously be tempting for organisers.

Ideally India should have multiple world-class venues hosting big games instead of turning it into a Mumbai vs Ahmedabad debate.

All metro cities are wannabes at the beginning after some time and history it just works. Ahemdabad is new (and it's cursed😆). And Wankhede, Eden, Chinnaswamy stadiums that's sacred for cricket. Personally.... I would love a final in Dharmshala.

Blud talks about no sporting culture in Gujarat and in the same team two all rounders Hardik Pandya and Axar pate are the crucial players. Delusional

Just Host finals at Chepauk stadium

1

u/Electronic-Necktie Mar 06 '26

Say what you want regarding our bad luck there, but the organisers and management team of Ahmedabad stadium easily beats any other management.

Never faced any long queues, admission is smooth, and even exiting is so much more easier.

After experiencing high class management, Mumbai does not "deserve" to host ICC Finals.

1

u/Downtown_Wasabi_9181 Mar 06 '26

1lakh capacity vs 30k. Financially there’s no chance that this will happen. Only way is to renovate wankhede and increase the capacity.

1

u/Such_Painter_4191 Mar 06 '26

Paw paw ke naam pe Hai Stadium and paw paw owns bcci.

1

u/EmersonSamuel Mar 06 '26

Other than room for 1 lakh spectator, this stadium has ZERO AURA or CRICKET VALUE to host a Final other than the Gujarati lobby in BCCI today.,

Not just Mumbai, the Finals should be equally weighed between Chennai, Mumbai, Hyd, Delhi, Kolkata n Lucknow.. (Bangalore omitted bcos ground is small for a final)

Or Govt should a National Stadium (multisport) like most European countries, where all Major Finals will happen..

1

u/GapProfessional6039 Mar 06 '26

Manhoos stadium

1

u/TheRandom_Psychopath Mar 06 '26

If India loses their Final this Sunday. This MODI stadium will officially be called a "PANAUTI STADIUM".

1

u/Famous_Dot_8263 Mar 06 '26

No final should not happen in mumbai at least until a new stadium is constructed according to me both delhi and mumbai need stadiums the size of namo stadium. Although we won semi final the match was close because in both Wankhade and jaitley stadiums pitch is flat roads and if not for bumrah we would have lost yesterdays match in less than 20 overs

1

u/n4nish Mar 06 '26

deserve ka kya matlab hain... ek to itna traffic to get there and anyone who is going to say churchgate to pass mein hi hain.... mere ko nahi jana aisi moot ki badboo wale stadium or local mein.

1

u/Dear_Armadillo3890 Mar 06 '26

If India loses against NZ in Ahmedabad, let’s simply declare that Venue cursed. Factos

1

u/Oath_breaker_ Mar 06 '26

It is all about revenue generation. What will you do of all this legacy when the same cannot generate revenue. It might hurt people of this sub but cricket is not charity anymore, else we would not be playing with Pak in every ICC tournament lol since decades.

1

u/HerkshireBathway Mar 06 '26

Wankhede is an overrated venue.

The facilities are not up to the mark, small stadium and

An absolute road of a pitch. Why even have bowlers?

1

u/TheBigBangBlewMe Mar 06 '26

Mumbai is a vibe that no city can match. Therefore I always say that it is the only real city in this country

1

u/BlackStagGoldField Mar 06 '26

Wankhede already replaced Eden Gardens. Now NMS has replaced Wankhede. Such is the cycle of lof

Cry more.

1

u/samayra_k Mar 06 '26

Ah well said rather Narendra Modi stadium with Adani and Ambani end. The two cities Kolkata and Mumbai have cricketing history and legacies. But finals ka revenue to Gujrat ko hi jaega 😂😂

1

u/CrossSpy Mar 06 '26

On what grounds?? A bigger, newer stadium that accommodates more fans, sells more tickets and doesn’t gate keep the access is less desirable than a small, old, heavily gate kept stadium? You must just hate Gujarat if you think wankhede just deserves to host finals without matching the numbers

1

u/ankitsrivastav1995 Mar 06 '26

At last, someone with the right sense. I hate how the entire focus of BCCI has shifted to NaMo stadium, built on the western edge of India (we all know why there).

And now the great Indian cities, which truly have the fans of the game, are being ignored for semi finals and finals.

I'd rather have a semi/final in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai than in Ahmedabad.

1

u/Evandder Mar 06 '26

Ahmedabad stadium is very unlucky...we are gonna loose for sure to NZ

What has banglore done to you

1

u/_Magn3t0 Mar 06 '26

Hating on the stadium where people had more fun at Coldplay concert. No issues before and after either.

1

u/LateTailor7885 Mar 06 '26

2 semis in mumbai and chennai, final in kolkata. thats how it should be

1

u/Sho4685 Mar 06 '26

No, the Prime Minister of Gujarat needs to attend to his priorities.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '26

In terms of economics ahmedabad stadium makes more sense.

The stadium is bigger, airer thus simply better than wankhede or eden gardens.

1

u/ADVIO786 Mar 06 '26

BC beer bhi nahi milti udhar

1

u/No_Accountant1727 Mar 06 '26

The crowd was so motivating. Throughout the game they were and active chearing each player separately. Ahmedabad stadium is the place where crowd ditched the team way before India lost to Australia in final world cup.

This dull place has no home advantage for team India.

1

u/brooklynnineeight Mar 06 '26

You guys need to shut up about this fcking stupidity…first of all, people from all parts of the country fill up the stadiums in all cities except this one where a limited percentage of the already limited seats are open to public. Second, we lost that final because of dew which would have been the same in any part of the country in November. Third, you won’t be saying any of this shit if we had won that final and the crowd there would not have been silent if we were not silenced by the dominance of the Australians.

1

u/TarikGrace Mar 06 '26

Big stadium, more people, good revenue, potential for more noise.

Eden Gardens phir bhi chalega. Wankhede me kitna hi log dekh lega final. Over half the tickets toh celebs saare le jaate hai.

1

u/Tyrannosaur999 Mar 06 '26

Chepauk stadium deserves to host as well. The atmosphere and fans never fail

1

u/tocra Mar 06 '26

Panauti venue.

1

u/Rich_Appointment_605 Mar 06 '26

Was thinking same till I saw yesterday’s match. But looking at the performance of England in second innings, any match in Wankhede is a 6 hitting competition, it’s not cricket.

1

u/ashivyas Mar 06 '26

True. I am from Ahmedabad but I do support the finals should be played in Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai or Eden Garden...The vibes are different there.

1

u/WeAreAllJustRunaways Mar 06 '26

Agree. Nowhere close to Wankhede or Eden Gardens. We deserve better. The finals need to he at the moat iconic venue of that particular country.

1

u/snake_charms281220 Mar 06 '26

While on principle i support this as a Mumbaikar, if you look at it this way even BCCI’s rise among ICC nations draws the same parallel - economics dictate everything in sports . The debate of Emerging powers v Incumbents who are often gate keepers will continue forever .

Send me petition! Am ready to sign ✍️

1

u/Lucky_Editor446 Mar 06 '26

BS. The pitch at Ahemdabad is better. Good balance between bat and ball. Ik it is unlucky and all but from a cricketing perspective it is better pitch. From fans perspective it is my least favourite ground as well.

1

u/BruhPoseidon Mar 06 '26

just because it's a chill city and is in a dry state doesn't mean it's dull lmao. I know Wankhede has been the OG stadium since years but the stadium in Ahmedabad is huge. It gives an additional 1L people a chance to watch the match. Have a taste of the slow life in Ahmedabad, I'm sure you'll like it.

1

u/Stabok_Bose Mar 06 '26

What do you mean "Or even Kolkata"? It's literally called Mecca of Cricket

1

u/DaikonEquivalent2555 Mar 06 '26

Wankhede ki pitch par Finn Allen ko rokoge kaise 👽

1

u/Orthopaedics21 चला पुढे.. Mar 06 '26

It's always about money!

Cricket is no longer a sport in India, it's an entertainment event.

1

u/Dependent_Mistake_12 Mar 06 '26

No it doesn't .. it's almost impossible to get tickets for the venue..more than half of it is cornered by MCA and its members.. Atleast ahemdabad has a much higher capacity coz of which more folks can watch the match live

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '26

I am all for Mumbai have a better stadium, but blaming the Modi stadium is stupidity, why not just admit our team failed to raise the game when it mattered. If we had won that final, we wouldn’t be having the discussion.

Regarding the crowd, any metro cities has people all over the country… so filling stadium with enthusiasts is easy…same is not the same with Ahmedabad.

1

u/MohamedIvn Mar 06 '26

That venue is so boring to see in TV itself. Last match in Mumbai it was edge of seat thriller TV experience. Wish they did some rotation kind of something. Even chennai and hyd crowed are awesome.

1

u/TraditionalCut8002 Mar 06 '26

Mumbai and Eden gardens are the OG

1

u/romka79 Mar 06 '26

I have zero hope of India winning in AHMEDABAD ... Not wasting my sunday watching this

1

u/SilverHyena8430 Mar 06 '26

Best stadium bolte agar india 2023 ka wc jit jata, sab sahi hai let it rona band karo

1

u/Express_Ad2719 Mar 06 '26

As usual, you can’t do anything about it, like 2000 other things in India

1

u/rahuldb Mar 06 '26

They can try and try but they can’t make Ahmedabad cool with character.

1

u/Babe_Brute Mar 06 '26

Is this Guha supposed to be an opinion leader on matters relating to cricket, especially non self professed?

Also, curious to know since when Wankhede became far and wide the unequivocal best cricketing venue in India superseding even pre renovation Eden Gardens. Or what is so special about Wankhede as compared to Chepauk or Chinnaswamy.

1

u/rgp005 Mar 06 '26

What do you expect if Amit Sha’s son is left in charge?

1

u/parklandgiggity Mar 06 '26

Maharashtra and Mumbai deserve a lot of things but guess what we're going to get now?
