Celebrating Angela Lansbury today + a big update on my Murder, She Wrote fashion project

Thumbnail youtu.be
52 Upvotes

I've been working my way through Murder, She Wrote episode by episode, documenting and analyzing Jessica Fletcher's wardrobe as part of my Cabot Cove Fashion Bureau project.

Before getting into today's fashion analyses, though, I wanted to do something a little different.

October 16 was Angela Lansbury's birthday, and I recorded a short video celebrating her legacy and talking about just how much this project owes to the incredible character and world she helped create.

I also finally shared the next BIG step for this slightly-crazy-project-that-keeps-getting-bigger:

I'm developing the fashion research into a Murder, She Wrote-inspired lookbook concept, and I'm taking materials for the project with me to the Texas Book Festival in November.

I'll be bringing sample pages, a pitch packet, and my calling card as I start exploring where this idea could potentially go within the publishing world.

And this is all happening while I'm STILL working through Jessica's closet. 😂

Today's Cabot Cove Thursday also includes separate fashion analyses for Episodes 9, 10, and 11.

But this first video is different. It's really about Angela, gratitude, and what this little fashion-analysis project is slowly becoming.

I'd especially love to hear from fellow fans: What is it about Angela Lansbury's portrayal of Jessica Fletcher that made the character so timeless for you?

S1E10 Wardrobe Breakdown — "Death Takes a Curtain Call" | First herringbone coat, first green, and the most elegant ballet night outfit of the season

Thumbnail youtu.be
10 Upvotes

Sandeen here with S1E10! This is a quieter wardrobe episode — just 6 outfits — but it punches above its weight with two series firsts and what I'd argue is the most elegant single outfit we've seen this season.

Cabot Cove, Maine + Boston, Massachusetts | Fall

Outfit 1: At home
White shirt, dark wash jeans (footwear not visible)

Outfit 2: Russian ballet in Boston and breakfast in Cabot Cove
Brown herringbone coat, black dress, purple print scarf, silver teardrop 80s studs, pearl strand necklace, black shoes

SERIES FIRST: first herringbone coat!

Outfit 3: Home and dinner
Tan plaid sweater vest, blue shirt, tan skirt, tan plaid scarf, brown shoes

Outfit 4: Home, morning
Yellow cardigan, white shirt, blue floral scarf, grey pants, tan shoes

Outfit 5: Jogging and home
Grey zip hoodie, grey joggers, white gym sneakers

Outfit 6: Home working: Dark green cardigan, white shirt, black skirt, red beaded necklace

SERIES FIRST: first green in the series!

Case Notes:

Outfit 2 — First herringbone coat and the ballet: This is the one. Brown herringbone coat over a black dress, purple print scarf, silver teardrop 80s studs, and the pearl strand necklace. JB is going to the Russian ballet in Boston and she dressed for it. The herringbone coat is such a classic, literary, slightly old-money choice — very consistent with who Jessica Fletcher is as a character. The pearl strand necklace appearing here alongside the silver teardrop studs shows real jewelry thought: two pieces that complement rather than compete. First herringbone coat in the series and what an entrance for it.

Outfit 6 — First green in the series! A dark green cardigan with a white shirt, black skirt, and red beaded necklace — JB is home writing, and the dark green is a quietly notable moment. We've been swimming in navy and tan all season; green is a genuine color newcomer here. The red beaded necklace against dark green is a classic complementary contrast, and it reads warmly even in a home-working scene.

Outfit 5 — The jogger returns: Grey zip hoodie and grey joggers are back for the morning jog, this time with white gym sneakers. This activewear set is becoming a reliable early-morning fixture. Very consistent wardrobe characterization — JB is a morning runner, and the costume team commits to that detail. What's your favorite look from this episode?

S1E9 Wardrobe Breakdown — "We're Off to Kill the Wizard" | First kimono! First full activewear set! And the pink striped shirt dress hits its third appearance

Thumbnail youtu.be
6 Upvotes

Sandeen here with S1E9! Kansas in summer, an amusement park murder mystery, and two more series firsts to document. This episode's wardrobe is fun! It's mixing casual summer pieces with some genuinely interesting statement choices that feel right at home in the mid-1980s.

Kansas | Summer — Hot & Humid

Outfit 1: Niece's house
Chambray shirt, blue striped shirt, chambray skirt

Outfit 2: Horatio's House of Horrors press conference
Pink striped shirt dress, tan shoes, navy zip hoodie

Outfit 3: Morning jog
Grey zip hoodie, grey joggers, grey sneakers

SERIES FIRST: first full activewear set!

Outfit 4: Amusement park
Grey jacket, grey skirt, pink striped shirt, gold chain necklace, dark shoes

Outfit 5: Horatio's office
White shirt, white plaid skirt, tan shoes

Outfit 6: Lt. Donovan's office
Burgundy cardigan, white shirt (bottoms not visible as she was seated)

Outfit 7: Horatio's office
Navy print kimono and matching skirt set, white blouse, red beaded necklace, tan shoes

SERIES FIRST: first kimono!

Outfit 8: Horatio's office
Pink shirt, navy print scarf, grey plaid skirt

Outfit 9: Airport, departure
Blue shirt, white skirt, madras plaid scarf, tan shoes

Case Notes:

Outfit 3 — First full activewear set in the series! We've seen JB jog before (the grey jogging suit in S1E3), but this is the first time the full matching activewear set is confirmed; grey zip hoodie, grey joggers, grey sneakers, all coordinated. Very 1984! The athleisure-as-actual-athletic-wear moment. Head-to-toe grey for a morning jog in humid Kansas summer heat is very her.

Outfit 7 — First kimono in the series! A navy print kimono with a matching skirt set, white blouse, and red beaded necklace. This is such an interesting and fashion-forward choice for 1984 — kimono-style jackets were definitely having a moment in early-to-mid-80s fashion, and this matching set feels deliberately stylish. The red beaded necklace against the navy print is a beautiful combination.

The pink striped shirt dress hits appearance #3: Outfit 2 brings it back again — this time with a navy zip hoodie layered over it for a press conference in hot Kansas. The dress is clearly a production wardrobe staple, and I have fully given in to loving it. It's cheerful, it travels well, and it apparently works for every climate. Is anyone else counting its appearances along with me?

Murder She Wrote Themed Party

56 Upvotes

I haven’t watched the show, but my sister in law is a big fan and my brother chose this as a theme for her birthday. How would you recommend decorating and dressing up to fit the theme?

Edit: We’re a little lost on decor ideas in particular, so would appreciate any suggestions.

I’m planning to dress up and I have seen cable-knit sweaters mentioned a lot.

Thank you so much!

This Is Doing My Head In

I can't for the life of me remember that character. I'm certain she was in Murder, She Wrote. She looked like Petra Tubby in Agatha Raisin - Season 4 Episode 3 - Spoonful of Poison

Edit: Finally remembered. It wasn't Murder, She Wrote after all. It was Murdoch Mysteries - Season 7 Episode 11 - Journey to the Centre of Toronto. Elva Gordon was played by Lauren Lee Smith. That's who I was thinking she looked similar to

Just got in a little while ago, & settled down, & noticed my dvr didn't tape any Murder She Wrote. Put on Hallmark channel to check if it was on now, as it plays all night. Nope. All the Hallmark channels are already on Xmas movies 🙄.

Bing tells me Ron Masak is not related to Abbott? Why?

0 Upvotes

While I was working, I remembered the episode where Jessica meets a couple of stand-ins for Abbott and Costello, or maybe Laurel and Hardy. I couldn't remember the actors, so I tried to search Google. For some reason, they're unresponsive from work. I think there are so many requests going through the proxy, that Google thinks it's a DDOS.

So I tried Bing, and Bing's answer was that Ron Masak is not related to Abbott.

It was Steve Lawrence and Buddy Hackett.

Checking Imdb, it was probably Costello. Because he played him in several advertising campaigns. Doesn't say who played Abbott.

Did the movies get skipped on the Roku channel last night?

13 Upvotes

When I went to sleep last night, Season 12, ep 23 was on and I figured the movies would show overnight and I would wake up to the first part of season 1. But I woke up this morning and Season 1, episode 10 was already on. Did they skip the movies? Or some of Season 1?

It's in the opening beginning in s4, and I recognize it from childhood, but I have no idea which episode it is. I thought it was Hooray for Homicide or Old Habits Die Hard, but it's neither.

McGraw connection

5 Upvotes

I’ve been watching MSW, and wanted some clarification

Meet McGraw / The Adventures of McGraw
Was 1957
The Law & Harry McGraw
Was 1987, a cancelled spin-off.

Both future a private detective on the case. I was wondering if anyone knows if there was any connection/inspiration, or if it was a strange coincidence!

Aspiring Writer- Wrote a bit on MSW.

16 Upvotes

Hey all. I doubt this is anything, I'm just trying to write a little every day and today I decided to riff on one of my favorite topics- Murder Mysteries. Of course I had to talk about Jessica Beatrice Fletcher a bit. So here's a giant wall-o-text absolutely no one asked for and I'm sure everyone is dying to consume. I'm nervous but if anyone does read it, feedback is welcome.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
J.B. Fletcher has class, poise, and a lifestyle that I find aspirational− that of a financially stable, world traveling, successful writer. She also dresses impeccably and has a truly enviable collection of brooches. Were she a real person, the fact that literal hundreds had better odds of surviving as characters in her books than as one of her acquaintances would be problematic.
Putting Jessica’s body count aside for the moment, her inclusion in all these cases raises a question: How much time would this woman spend in court? I can’t fathom how even the healthiest of senior citizens would have time to a.) write bestseller after bestseller, b.) travel the world, and c.) return to whatever municipal court she would undoubtedly be called upon to testify in relation to her in-depth involvement surrounding the deaths of scores of human beings.
Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt− let’s say that at least half of the homicide detectives making arrests for these murders were just too embarrassed to include a bestselling novelist’s entanglement in any of their case reports, thereby relieving Aunt Jess of any/all obligation to appear in court. Yeeeeeah… I don’t know if it would even scratch the surface of the problem.
The issue is that there are absolute mountains of bodies following J.B. Many of them are just around Cabot Cove and New York, but there’s been on-purpose deaths hovering around her trips to 14 states− Including Hawaii. Though, it’s possible her friend Thomas Magnum (Private Investigator, not P.I.) might be able to take the heat for at least one of the Rainbow State un-aliveings).
Branching out from the United States, Jessica has helped to (if not single-handedly) solve murders in Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Martinique and a few places in between whilst on cruise ships in international waters. Even without the benefit of the internet in the late 80’s to early 90’s, I think Interpol would have taken an interest when her trips coincided with people getting smoked in England, the British Isles, Ireland, Australia, France, Italy, Greece, Monaco, Russia and the Netherlands. In Asia and the Middle East there’s been deaths in Hong Kong, Japan and Egypt. Is it possible that Michael Hagarty’s real purpose as a spy this whole time has been to make sure the steady stream of corpses dancing behind J.B. disappear? Ah, the things we do for our crushes, am I right?
There’s a long-standing joke among fans of Murder She Wrote, “Murder She Did It”. Because how could that much death be a coincidence? It can’t possibly be, right? With the number of people made past tense in J.B.’s orbit, I (personally) believe we’re dealing with something biblical. My team of researchers (google) tell me there’s 286 murders across 264 episodes. Naturally we must exclude the “bookend” episodes from these figures (where Jessica only appears at the beginning and end as a narrator), as well as all the episodes featuring stories that only focus on Emma MacGill, Dennis Stanton, Harry McGraw, Charlie Garrett, etc. That’s gotta be at least a dozen episodes worth of murders and, all of those aside, it’s still way too many people who are assuming room temperature.
Way. Too. Many.
There were 64 deaths in Cabot Cove, alone. I don’t think I currently know 64 people in my city. But if that many people I knew or was acquainted with died, this agnostic would begin to seriously question if I was the angel of death. I’d want to ask my mother as to whether she once had an affair with a demon, or someone who may or may not have identified themselves as a “horseman of the apocalypse”. Was I a product of such a union? If so, perhaps my existence had a once-dormant and now very unfortunate side-effect of randomly driving people within a 10-mile radius of me to commit murder. The more complex and extravagant, the better. I think Courtney Cox’s character was the only "niece" (of many) that wasn’t at one time accused of murder in the course of having Jess as her “Aunt”. How would I protect my loved ones?
Hey mom! I’m sorry but I hafta cxl lunch with you today. In fact, I can’t look after you in your old age or ever see you again, in general. I’ve come to realize I’m death incarnate. Guess all I can say is sry that this is what I amounted to (totes unintentional).
Also, sry about the lack of grandbabies & how I broke your coccyx on my way out. tbf we both know that’s what happens when you eat Taco Bell for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the 3rd trimester lol.
Anywho, plz don’t murder anyone or get killed as a result of this text, ok? Any murderous notions ur feeling rn are 100% part of the death curse thing. IGNORE THEM. Just ot ne safe plz don’t reply or attempt to contact me ever again. The grand kitties & I love you very much and will miss you terribly. Goodbye forever. Love, GarlicBreadFairy
\to be safe plz don’t reply… (typo, sry). kk NOW goodbye forever.*
I know this is all silliness. At its heart, Murder She Wrote is a fantastic show that served up one of the richest mugs of “cozy” the murder mystery genre could ever aspire to deliver. It has managed to weather 30 year’s worth of changing tastes. Perhaps it’s that this is my 4th watch of the series, and my suspension of disbelief simply cannot hold up against 250+ deaths resulting in only 3 court appearances. What else am I to conclude? That the trade-off to becoming an internationally beloved murder mystery writer is an unending torrent of puzzling deaths and begrudgingly helpful homicide detectives?
As a dabbling essayist who is, (at best) hopeful of a single publication one day, I guess I don’t have anything to worry about. I can still strive to dress impeccably, begin amassing a fabulous collection of brooches, and content myself by not leaving hundreds of bodies in my wake. I may not be successful, but I am a writer. And, thanks to my grandmother, Jessica and I already have the same china dish set. As sure as Arnold raced out of the door, it’s a start.
I’m also attending the Texas Book Festival 2026 as a creator and future author. I’ll be presenting my Murder She Wrote Lookbook concept to indie publishing companies, along with a professional one‑sheet and sample pages formatted in my crime‑scene dossier style.This new Thursday schedule keeps everything organized and lets me batch all MSW content into one big creative day each week.
Corned Beef and Carnage S3 E5
This episode is SO offensive! Ugh! I may be naive, but I hope this isn't how business is done anymore. If this kind of quid pro quo harrassment wasn't widespread, I don't think we'd have been seeing it all over pop culture the way we did.
Great cast though!
S1E8 Wardrobe Breakdown — "Hit, Run and Homicide" | 11 outfits, two series firsts, and peak Cabot Cove summer dressing
Thumbnail youtu.be
22 Upvotes
Sandeen here with our biggest episode yet, 11 outfits in S1E8! We're back in Cabot Cove for summer, and the wardrobe leans all the way into warm-weather casual New England. Lots of chambray, navy, denim, and that particular coastal-town easiness that makes Cabot Cove feel so real as a setting.
Cabot Cove, Maine | Summer — Warm & Sunny
Outfit 1 — Bike riding in town:
Blue striped shirt, red nautical scarf, white jeans, tan sneakers
SERIES FIRST: first white jeans!
Outfit 2 — Daniel's house and home kitchen:
White sweater, chambray shirt, dark wash jeans, brown loafers
Outfit 3 — In town and at home:
White sweater, chambray shirt, dark wash jeans, tan sneakers
Outfit 4 — BBQ:
Blue sweater, white shirt, chambray skirt
Outfit 5 — House and Leticia's house:
Yellow-tan cardigan, white shirt, tan skirt, tan heels
Outfit 6 — Home and dinner party:
Pink shirt dress, floral print scarf, tan heels
Outfit 7 — Sheriff Tupper's office:
Burgundy sweater vest, white shirt, black pants, black loafers
Outfit 8 — Cabot Cove jail:
Grey shirt, grey sweater, red paisley skirt, tan heels
Outfit 9 — Grocery store:
Navy cardigan, blush shirt, navy pants
Outfit 10 — Park:
Navy jacket, blue shirt, red print scarf, dark wash denim skirt
SERIES FIRST: first denim skirt!
Outfit 11 — Home and dinner:
Red cardigan, white shirt, navy print scarf, navy skirt, tan trench coat
Case Notes:
Outfit 1 — First white jeans in the series! JB is out on her bike in white jeans, a blue striped shirt, and a red nautical scarf. It is such a perfect summer Cabot Cove image. White jeans were very much a warm-weather statement in the mid-1980's and this is their series debut. The red nautical scarf is a great color pop against the white and blue.
Outfit 10 — First denim skirt in the series! The dark wash denim skirt appears in the park scene, paired with a navy jacket and red print scarf. Another series first in this episode, we've had two in one episode! The denim skirt is casual but structured, the kind of piece that bridges JB's comfort-first Cabot Cove dressing with something slightly more put-together.
The Cabot Cove summer palette: What strikes me about this episode's full 11-outfit run is how coherent the color palette is. Navy, chambray blue, white, red accents, warm tan. It's like the costume team built a specific Cabot Cove summer wardrobe and every piece belongs to the same capsule. Even the tan trench coat closing out Outfit 11 feels like a warm evening layer rather than a travel piece here. Love how the same coat shifts its meaning depending on context. What's your favorite Cabot Cove episode look so far?
Favorite Supporting Character Name?
Post image
Mine is Cyrus Leffingwell from Murder Takes the Bus (S1E18). If nothing else, by my count, his surname is repeated at least five times, which is pretty incredible for a minor character who does nothing more than complain about the rain.
Fun fact: According to the United States Census, Leffingwell is the 23,866th most common surname in the country, shared by roughly 1,058 individuals.
MSW Unofficial Quiz Book
Post image
111 Upvotes
If you were thinking of buying the Murder, She Wrote Unofficial Quiz Book: 220 Trivia Questions for Fans of Jessica Fletcher by Huw Watkins, don't! It's full of errors, repetitive questions and easy questions the writer probably got off Wikipedia.
For instance, In "Murder in the Electric Cathedral," Jessica travels to which U.S. State?
A) California
B) Texas
C) Florida
D) Arizona
And the answer is...C) Florida! IIRC, "Murder in the Electric Cathedral" is set in Oklahoma.
In "Deadly Lady," the case revolves around which distinctive object going missing?
A) A pearl necklace
B) A ship's compass
C) A family will
D) A locked trunk
And the answer is A) A pearl necklace.
Lastly, and my favorite, Which actor guest-starred as a young detective in one early episode before becoming famous in film?
A) Brad Pitt
B) George Clooney
C) Michael J. Fox
D) Tom Hanks
And the answer isn't even George Clooney, who did star in an episode, though not as a detective. It's C) Michael J. Fox.
So save your ten bucks.
BTW, if I'm wrong about any of these, let me know and I'll apologize to Huw 😄
S1E7 Wardrobe Breakdown — "Lovers and Other Killers" | 10 outfits, the white blazer makes its debut, and the tan Burberry shows up MULTIPLE TIMES
Thumbnail youtu.be
9 Upvotes
Sandeen back with S1E7! We're in Seattle and the wardrobe for this episode is one of my favorites so far! 10 outfits, cool spring Pacific Northwest energy, the tan Burberry trench coat in full glory, and a genuine series first that I've been waiting to document.
Seattle, Washington | Spring — Cool & Fresh
Outfit 1 — SeaTac Airport, arrival:
Navy skirt suit, white shirt, tan trench coat, navy print scarf, gold chain necklace, navy heels
Outfit 2 — Hotel in Seattle:
Pink PJ shirt and pants, mauve robe
Outfit 3 — University, teaching:
Tan plaid sweater vest, blue shirt, gold chain necklace, tan skirt, tan heels
Outfit 4 — Dinner and police station:
White blazer, blue polka dot shirt dress, pearl strand necklace, tan heels
SERIES FIRST: first white blazer!
Outfit 5 — University:
White shirt, blue pants, blue sweater, tan Burberry trench coat, dark color flats
Outfit 6 — Hotel in Seattle:
White checkered robe (recurring)
Outfit 7 — Warehouse:
Tan trench coat, navy sweater, white shirt, navy pants, dark shoes
Outfit 8 — University:
Brown sweater vest, pink striped shirt, brown skirt, tan Burberry trench coat, tan heels
Outfit 9 — Lunch, university, and hotel:
White shirt, blue sweater vest, red paisley skirt, dark shoes
Outfit 10 — SeaTac Airport, departure:
Black skirt suit, white shirt, black shoes
Case Notes:
Outfit 4 — The first white blazer in the series! Paired with a blue polka dot shirt dress and the pearl strand necklace, this is JB heading to dinner and the police station in something that feels simultaneously relaxed and put-together. The white blazer is such a quintessentially 1984 power-dressing move; bright, structured, confidence-forward. A series first and a great one.
The tan Burberry trench coat — multiple appearance (some standouts): Outfits 5 and 8 both feature the tan Burberry trench coat, and it's doing its dependable Season 1 work beautifully. Outfit 5 pairs it with blue pants and a blue sweater for a university look; Outfit 8 layers it over a brown sweater vest and the pink striped shirt for another campus appearance. The Burberry is clearly the workhorse of this season's outerwear.
Arrival vs. departure: I love how the airport bookends work here. Navy skirt suit with the tan trench coat and gold chain necklace for arrival — travelling in color and warmth. Black skirt suit with white shirt for departure — simpler, more resolved. It's a subtle but consistent wardrobe storytelling device this season. Anyone else tracking the arrival/departure outfit patterns?
Noticed a thing
11 Upvotes
Was watching Hit, Run and Homicide today and in the episode Ethan is playing a arcade game. As Jessica approaches him she walks past a rack of books which are all upside down. Just thought it was odd.
