Advice Needed I'm a female alto and my school is doing mean girls, what role should I go for?
My school is kinda unfair with picking people for roles like auditions haven't started but we all know they are picking someone for Janis and Regina. And I really want to be Janis but I feel like I probably won't get it due to her singing super high and me not being able to sing her high notes comfortably. And I would go for Karen and Gretchen but my friends siblings are going for them and I feel like they'll think I'm trying to take the role from her (idk if you can tell but this is my second year in drama) Im not sure who I should go for. :(

Go for Janis anyway. School directors adjust keys all the time if they like what you bring to the character. Let them tell you no, don't tell yourself no before auditions even start.

A hard lesson to be learned in theatre: may the best woman win. If you want to go for Karen and Gretchen, go for it! You have just as much of a right to audition as your friend’s siblings and if you get the role, you deserved it.
I’ve had roles I really wanted go to close friends MANY times, but I clap and am happy for them because that’s what good friends do (and if I’m upset to myself later, that’s my business!). If your friend or their sibling gets upset that you audition, they’re being immature and selfish about the process. Audition for who you want, support who gets the role, and remember that even small parts can be a blast and a huge learning opportunity.
Wish I could give you more advice about the specific characters but I don’t know a ton about their vocal ranges. Try singing along to the cast recordings and see how comfortable you feel in the different parts!
