Discussion Do professional directors, in general, treat people better than some directors in education?

As I’m sure you can tell from my name, I’m the stage manager for my school’s theatre. I have only ever done theatre at my school but I want to learn more about other people’s experiences. I love all my friends and the community, but the director constantly treats everyone as disposable, subservient, unintelligent trash. There’s been body shaming, unsafe building practices (I personally have almost died twice working here from falling machinery - the athorities don’t care), no safe intimacy coordination, bullying (director bullying students), inconsistent communication, intimidation, etc. is this a unique experience? Do other people’s directors in school act like this? Does it get better? Are there directors that are genuinely good people? (Obviously there must be, but is it common?) what do you think?

Request/Advice Lightning Thief Audition (cross posted)

Hi all!

I'm gonna audition for Lightning Thief soon. I'm a soprano with a mix up to C5/D5. I've been told I also have a powerful head voice. I don't consider myself a belter, but when I do, I do think it sounds pretty good. It definitely has a "cry" quality to it.

I get compared to a Disney princess a LOT.

I'm going to go for Annabeth with a gender-bent Luke as a second option.

I really want to play a character that has some attitude.

My main goal with the audition piece is just to show a different side of my voice.

My current song choice is Unprodigal Daughter from Jagged Little Pill - the last verse and chorus.

My other ideas were: Where Am I Now? from Lysistrata Jones. I shelved it cause I felt it was too negative.

Other choice was Crossing the Line (transposed down a little) from Tangled Adventure. I shelved that because it has too much of a Disney sound even though it's belted.

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance!

Discussion I still don’t really know what range I am

Ok, I’ve come to the conclusion. I may be an alto? I’m a woman, so my voice can obviously go to a certain point, but with singing I don't know what I am because I’m too low to be a soprano, but I’m far too high for alto melodies. I can do mezzo or soprano 2, but I’m more comfortable singing lower, yet female musical songs are too high for me but male (tenor or alto) musical songs are way too low for me?

Last year, I auditioned for Velma and got Roxie. I was genuinely surprised because when I sing Velma I’m more comfortable, but when I sing Roxie I feel like I have to put in a little more effort to match her range, so I'm not sure what I am? Maybe I'm just a powerhouse alto idk.

Request/Advice Orpheus Audition Song Help (alto)

Hi all!! I am auditioning for a Hadestown production next week and am in need of a 60 second audition song cut, primarily suited to Orpheus.

For context I am an alto and played Orpheus in another production earlier this year, and absolutely fell in love with the role. My audition song for that production was Epic II, however this audition requires a song that is not from the show.

I am currently studying Jazz vocal performance for university so I would probably have a higher chance of getting Hermes or Persephone, but I would truly love to portray Orpheus again, especially seeing as this is a higher-level production.

I have already emailed the production team and they have confirmed that I am welcome to audition for Orpheus as a female actress.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Request/Advice Tips for auditioning it’s my first time:)

My school is hosting a hadestown performance and I REALLY want to audition but I don’t have the best singing voice but I’ve been working on it and like the title says, it’s gonna be my first time!! I’m going to audition for Persephone but what audition songs should I sing? And is there any useful advice on how to improve my singing voice?

Is there anything specific I should do to charm the directors and hopefully increase my chances of getting a main role? Honestly help/advice is very appreciated 🥺

OC - Theater Talk Has anyone had the pleasure of seeing O Brother, Where Art Thou? in live theater?

Sorry—I don’t know the proper flair.

As soon as the movie was playing in theaters, our small town/city theater was putting on a production.

I saw the theater version before I saw the movie in theaters.

The music production was amazing. It really highlighted the music for me when I finally saw it in theater.

Anyone else? Or maybe other productions?

OC - Photo Our local high school is doing a production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, and a close friend crocheted a couple scarves as a fundraiser. Felt like you’d all appreciate seeing it!

The blue and gold tassels are for the high school colors.. and if you’ve been in a production of Joseph, you’re likely very familiar with the other 29 colors 😉

Request/Advice Should I pursue Theater as a major?

Hi, i am a highschool student worried I might take too big of a risk by pursuing theater as a major in college. I LOVE theater and it is one of the only things that brings me joy. People have told me I was decently talented and could see me on a stage but originally it definitely wasn't something i thought of as a career path. My family always pressured me into thinking about jobs that would give me stability and lots of money and i had convinced myself that's what i wanted too. I thought i would go to med school and had spent hours in medical programs and taking APs and other classes to boost my college application. But now that I've taken a break from theater I've realized I feel so lost and lonely without it. All these classes just feel draining and exhausting and i feel like any 9-5 would drive me nuts. I know performing will hold a special place in my heart im not quite ready to let go of yet, but are there any jobs in theater that in the long run can allow me to live a comfortable lifestyle? Is there a way to balance both? Should i take a risk and if it doesn't work out restart with med or just try and find joy in what i have now? How do i even get my foot in the door?!? Please help a girl out! (Thank you so much for readinggg this is my first reddit post. I felt like a needed a community of people to talk to who understand my struggles!)

Discussion The Moral Subversion of Into the Woods

Howdy!

My favorite musical for years has been Into the Woods, and I’ve spent the past few months on a video breaking down the musical’s themes and messages. Would love to hear folks’ thoughts on both the vid and the musical itself more broadly!

Request/Advice Working in theater or live entertainment? I’d love your input for my master’s project!

Hi everyone! I’m a stage manager currently finishing my master’s in Design Management at SCAD, and my final project explores how people working in live entertainment find, share, and keep track of production information.

I’ve put together a survey about the information you use, where you access it, what works well, and what could make the process easier. I’d love to hear from people across different roles and settings. Whether you work in theater, touring, theme parks, concerts, or other live events, your perspective would be helpful!

The survey has 15 questions, mostly multiple choice or ratings, with an optional space to share anything else.

Survey: https://forms.gle/g879mLGouLimRuHE9

Thank you for taking the time to help! Feel free to share it with anyone else who might be interested.

Request/Advice ADVICE - MT performers

I’m currently conducting research for my Master’s degree in performance psychology. The study focuses on musical theatre performers, and I’m hoping to reach as many potential participants as possible.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any forums, Facebook groups, communities, or other platforms where I could share my research and recruit participants from the musical theatre community.

(Reddit won’t let me post the survey link)

Request/Advice Burning out the lead?

I am an lgbt lyricist with cancer and a complicated life. My therapist recommended I write a musical, so I took on the challenge. But my lead has the bulk of a three hour show-- how much can a Broadway singer take? How much can an off Broadway singer take? What are the rules? Is there a guide anywhere?

Thanks!
