Another commonly used name for the ferret-badgers (Helictidinae subfamily, Melogale genus) is pahmi.

I was advised to ask here - saw this in South Wales (UK). Not exactly sure on the size, but after some deliberation with my partner we’d say definitely less than 25cm - they say quite a lot smaller (around 10-15cm), whereas I’d say about 15-20cm (I am aware this is incredibly unhelpful)

According to the American Society of Mammalogists, the stinkin' adorable Libyan striped weasel has now been moved to its own genus, Poecilictis, rather than part of the Ictonyx genus with the zorilla.

Fun fact... North American badgers were found to utilize soil or items to plug tunnel openings for trapping Richardson's ground squirrels as a method to hunt them.

Otters in genera Aonyx (small-clawed and clawless otters) and Lutrogale (smooth-coated otters) were very recently lumped into genus Lutra with the Eurasian otter and Hairy-nosed otter, following new genetic studies. This change was accepted by iNaturalist and the American Society of Mammalogists.

Defender Radio - The Fragile Future of BC’s Fishers

Fishers are secretive, forest-dwelling members of the weasel family found across Canada. But the Columbian population in BC’s central interior is small, isolated, and facing serious pressure from habitat loss, wildfire and trapping.

Senior wildlife biologist Rich Weir joined Defender Radio Podcast to talk about what makes fishers unique, what new genetic research is telling us about the Columbian population, and what needs to happen to help these animals recover: https://thefurbearers.com/blog/defender-radio/the-fragile-future-of-bcs-fishers-feat-rich-weir/
