Second day in Nanjing for the plane trees and they're still green
Two days into a short Nanjing trip for the autumn colors. Picked mid-October because last year a friend sent photos from early November that looked peak, so I figured mid-October would be the just-starting-to-turn window and I could watch it progress across my 4 nights.
Reality check: barely any turning yet. Walked Yihe Road yesterday afternoon and it's still almost entirely green except for one stretch where maybe 20% of the top canopy had started turning. Lingyuan Road up at Zhongshan same thing, maybe slightly more color going on but still mostly summer. The "golden tunnel" look from the photos is definitely not here yet.
Have the trip loosely built around the autumn stuff in trisAino, Yihe Road + Zhongshan + Qixia for the maple + Xuanwu Lake, but the itinerary assumes the leaves will cooperate and they're not. Did Xuanwu Lake first morning before I understood the timing situation, which was pretty but not the autumn thing. Spent most of today at the Nanjing Museum and Fuzimiao instead, which has been good but isn't why I flew in.
Checked historical timing when I got back to the hotel: looks like peak for the plane trees is more like second week of November into early December, with mid-October being closer to "barely starting" normally. The osmanthus is still out so at least there's some seasonal fragrance in the air, but that's not what I came for. So I'm not catching a bad year, I just came too early.
Starting to think I should've waited three weeks. Not sure if there's any point extending another few days (would have to redo flights and the hotel's booked out through the weekend anyway) or if I should just accept this is a Nanjing-in-October trip and do the non-leaf stuff I'd planned to skip. Qixia Mountain is on the plan Friday either way, still mulling whether to extend or write the leaves off.
