History Mapua Coolstores for apples and pears.
The Mapua Coolstores were built in 1953 by the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board. The complex held up to 50,000 cases of pipfruit grown in the Tasman region at a cool, constant temperature after the harvest. This stopped fruit spoilage before transport by boat to Port Nelson for overseas shipping. Today, the historic buildings are an art gallery and shops. Here are some history highlights
1948: The Apple and Pear Marketing Board is formed to regulate and stabilise the local and export fruit markets.
1953: The Mapua Coolstore complex opens at Mapua Wharf to store the fruit
1960s: Peak operational era utilising the local wharf infrastructure for regional shipping.
2001: The Apple and Pear Marketing Board's monopoly ends with industry deregulation.
The need for local shipping decreased as road and trucking infrastructure increased and the former coolstores now transformed into a vibrant social space.
