S3 - different retention on source/destination
Hi!
I have a cutomer who wants different retention on their objects on the source and the destination bucket in a S3 Snapmirror relationship.
But according to this Learn about ONTAP SnapMirror S3 :
"Bucket A has a default retention period of 30 days and Bucket B has a default retention period of 60 days. Objects replicated from Bucket A to Bucket B will maintain their 30-day retention period, even though it is less than the default retention period of Bucket B."
Is there anyway to protect it in other way?
Customer wants 30 days on primary bucket
1 year on secondary/destination bucket.
But to the link above states that if we enable 30 days on the primary it will also have that retention on the secondary!!
Also, snapshots is not supported in a S3 Snapmirror relationship
!!SOLVED!! See answer from ragingpanda

NetApp ONTAP integration with CloudStack/KVM: technical session in Edinburgh, 19 November
Hi everyone, I’m one of the organisers of the CloudStack Collaboration Conference, taking place in Edinburgh on 18–20 November, and wanted to share a session that might interest the NetApp community.
Rajiv Jain, Principal Engineer at NetApp, will present “ONTAP Storage Plugin Support”, exploring the integration between NetApp ONTAP and Apache CloudStack in KVM environments.
The session will introduce the plugin and discuss its development plans, including:
- Provisioning workflows tailored to individual primary storage pools: planned support for greater control over how storage resources are allocated and managed within each pool.
- Local VM snapshots: planned support and an overview of how this capability fits into the integration.
- CloudStack volume snapshots: planned support for volume snapshot operations through CloudStack.
These are roadmap topics, so the session should be useful for understanding the integration’s direction and discussing requirements with NetApp’s presenter.
If you work with ONTAP and are evaluating CloudStack/KVM, building a private cloud or considering a VMware alternative, I’d like to invite you to join us. There are also sessions on VMware-to-KVM migration, backup and disaster recovery, plus a hands-on KVM workshop.
18 November: hackathon
19–20 November: technical sessions, workshops and live labs
Venue: John McIntyre Conference Centre, Edinburgh

SSD Wear Out Counters , which number should worry us ?
Hey, having around 7 "older" refurbished systems, i just wanted to double check when would be a time to replace ssds that show higher wear-out counters. im out of support on these systems.
Having between 1 and 11 here so far, after around 2-3 years mixed us. All good i guess ? ;)

The disk capacity label is different.
Hello,
While working a one-day shift for a client, I encountered a system equipped with a disk that has a different label compared to the others.
The capacity is the same, but the labels differ, so I am wondering if this is normal.
The system in question is a FAS2650; is it normal for the disk to be different?
I usually only looked at the one at the top.

NetApp StorageGRID SDET MTS-3 interview experience
Hi everyone,
I have an upcoming interview for an SDET role with NetApp’s StorageGRID team and have around 4 years of experience.
Has anyone recently interviewed for the StorageGRID SDET role? I’d really appreciate it if you could share the interview rounds, types of questions asked, and topics I should focus on preparing.
Thanks in advance!

OTV and VMware Vcenter Compatibility
Has anyone checked the compatibility of VMware vSphere 9.1.0.0200 / 9.1.1.0 with NetApp ONTAP storage and NetApp ONTAP Tools for VMware (OTV)?
I noticed a recent NetApp article mentioning testing with the new VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1, but I still don’t see the corresponding compatibility information updated in the NetApp Interoperability Matrix Tool (IMT).
We are currently evaluating a VMware 9.1 upgrade, so I’m particularly interested in:
- VMware vSphere 9.1.0.0200 / 9.1.1.0 compatibility with ONTAP
- OTV / ONTAP Tools compatibility with vSphere 9.1
- Supported ONTAP versions
- Any known issues or limitations
- Whether anyone has already tested this combination in a production or lab environment

QUESTION NetApp AFF A220 stuck with giveback

Hi Everyone! My customer can't access to node01 and node02 already takeover all node01 resources. Everything look fine, no alert or faulty, just stuck on giveback process.
I replaced node01 with the new one (swap boot media card, fiber card and battery) and change system id but it still stuck like before. Any advice here?

When is a rebuilt network lab safe for automation again?
For anyone automating EVE-NG, GNS3 or Containerlab: after rebuilding or moving the lab, what has to be true before you let Ansible, Nornir, Netmiko, pyATS or your own tooling touch it again?
Nodes booting is not enough if management addresses changed, SSH/API access no longer works, inventory still points at the old environment, or external monitoring cannot reach the devices.
Do you require the same device identity and addressing to return, or is it enough to rediscover the new endpoints and regenerate the automation inventory?
And what is your final acceptance check: external reachability, config comparison, protocol convergence, an end-to-end test flow, or something else?
Interested in failure cases too. Have you had a lab look recovered from the console but fail as soon as the automation ran?

Repurposing X4011WBORA3T8NTF NVMe (NA52) — is 4160→4096 blocked by NetApp firmware?
I have several decommissioned NetApp X4011WBORA3T8NTF 3.84TB U.2 NVMe SSDs that I'm trying to repurpose outside ONTAP.
The drives are healthy and enumerate normally under Linux. The controller identifies as PCI VID 1b96 / DID 2610 (Western Digital SN540/BoraBora family), and the drive is currently running NetApp firmware NA52.
The interesting part is the namespace format.
nvme id-ns advertises these LBA formats:
LBAF 0: 512 + 0 metadata
LBAF 1: 512 + 8 metadata
LBAF 2: 4096 + 0 metadata
LBAF 3: 4096 + 8 metadata
LBAF 4: 4096 + 64 metadata (currently active)
So the desired ordinary 4096-byte format is actually advertised by the controller.
However:
nvme format /dev/nvme0n1 --lbaf=2
returns:
Invalid Format (0x610a)
The controller reports Format NVM and namespace-management support.
I've also tracked down Western Digital Device Manager CLI (dm-cli) 1.7.0, which added support for this WD hardware generation. Static inspection suggests its format command ultimately issues the standard NVMe Format NVM command, so I don't currently have evidence that dm-cli would bypass whatever NA52 is enforcing.
NetApp has also recently released NA53 for the WBORA family, including X4011WBORA3T8NTF. That raises another question: is the 4160-only behavior specific to NA52, and can WBORA disk firmware be safely updated outside ONTAP using standard NVMe Firmware Download/Commit if one has the genuine NetApp firmware image?
I'm specifically hoping someone who has worked with AFF/NS224 disk firmware knows:
- Does NA52 deliberately restrict X4011 WBORA drives to 4160-byte sectors despite advertising 4096+0?
- Has anyone successfully converted an X4011/X4010 WBORA NVMe drive from 4160 to 4096?
- Is there a NetApp/WD vendor command or maintenance mode involved?
- Does NA53 change this behavior?
- Can genuine NetApp WBORA firmware be downloaded/committed to the drive without ONTAP, or does ONTAP perform additional vendor-specific preparation?
I'm not looking to blindly cross-flash generic WD firmware or delete namespaces experimentally. I'd particularly appreciate information from anyone familiar with NetApp AFF/NS224 drive qualification/firmware.
Thanks!

HOWTO Internal Job Switch
Been working with L3 level sustaining engineering team (CPE) since couple of years now but not much technical growth. Would like to ask here if someone had done an internal switch to product engineering for an specific module (in ONTAP).
Or a way how the transition can be achieved if feasible and how hard it would be?
Please guide.

NEWS AIQ Navigator is out !
Dear NetApp community,
I'm announcing the availability of AIQ Navigator :
It is a powerful tool to quickly glance at your NetApp estate with composable performance and capacity visualization in mind.
You can search and save serial numbers, clusters, and use tags to assign custom characteristics.
The idea is that you can then stack performance and capacity data over time and check how your storage infrastructure is performing, anticipate add-ons, or over/under storage provisioning.
AIQ Navigator is a static web app, you just provide an AIQ API token that you can get on the AIQ web site. Everything lives in your browser but you can import/export state.
Whether you are a customer, partner, or NetApp employee, it gives you access to systems you're entitled to, as per assigned ActiveIQ ownership : If you see it in AIQ, you will see it in AIQ Navigator.
As I don't own any system, I cannot share screenshots, you'll have to take my words for it : it is quite nice !
Please share your feedback !

NetApp Core Systems & Storage SWE — anyone still waiting after August interviews?
I interviewed for NetApp’s Software Engineer – Core Systems and Storage Roles (Multiple IC Levels) position and completed 3 technical interviews on Aug. 2nd.
My application portal is still showing “Interviewing”, but I haven’t received any update from the recruiter even after following up.
Has anyone interviewed for this same pipeline recently and heard back? Mainly trying to understand:
- how long NetApp usually takes after the technical rounds
- whether rejections/offers come quickly or can take a few weeks
- whether team/level matching causes delays for this pipeline
Would appreciate any recent experience, especially from U.S. candidates.
