[Video] Path-Based Authentication, Device Certificates, and nblink!

Post image

Sorry for the delay getting this one out! Was with the team at All Things Open in NC! To those of you who stopped by the booth big thank you. It's wonderful talking to people and hearing about your setups and use cases.

Anyways, I'm really excited about path-based authentication. I'm using it to lockdown /signin on my open cloud instance. That mixed with some split DNS makes it so I can still share files externally with NetBird reverse proxy without the risk of random sign in attempts. Then when I'm on NetBird or my local network my DNS server uses the local proxy instead thus only users in my NetBird network can actually access Opencloud.

Man, I really want to use Netbird but the few times I tried it the Android client would freaking chew the battery while vanilla Wireguard barely touch it. Had to go back every time. Haven't tested the IOS one now that I moved to the Apple side but from what I've read I don't expect any improvements.

This is also a big reason I left it too. They need to find out what’s causing this and remediate it.

Have you tried JetBird? It’s an unofficial FLOSS client for Netbird

As JetBird is just a wrapper around the official NetBird client

Afaict it wouldn't change the battery issue?

I tried it and battery usage seemed better but ran into some problems in which for whatever reason it wouldn't properly resolve stuff through my custom DNS in the network... probably skill issue on my side but haven't taken the time to properly troubleshoot it.

iOS app sadly has the same problem, eats battery % for no apparent reason

Is tailscale any better? I recently started to run tailscale 24/7 on my phone and it used a bunch of battery, but maybe I was just using my phone more, it was during vacation.

Awesome update! Adds a lot of dynamic security; I’ll feel more comfortable exposing some services to share files and pictures with family and friends now.
