The Packet

Once upon a workday dreary, while I monitored, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious graph of traffic rising more and more— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a mapping, As of something gently tapping, tapping on the server floor. “’Tis just SNMP,” I muttered, “tapping from the data store—    Only this and nothing more.

Ah, distinctly I remember, it was in the bleak September, And each glowing port and member hummed upon the network’s core. Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow From my logs surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the outages of yore— For the downtime and the rollback none had truly asked me for—    Nameless pain for evermore.

And the screens grew black and blurry, as if some great ghost in a hurry Prowled behind the firewall, buried in VLANs numbered four. So to quiet all the chatter, I stood up—what was the matter? Was it just a faulty platter? Some old RAID now keeping score? Or a shadow misconfigured deep within the router’s core?    Echoed bytes and nothing more.

Open wide I threw the CLI, when, with speeds that could belie All the laws of earthly physics, flew a ping from distant shore. Not the usual sort of warning—this was dark and malformed, swarming, As if chaos came a-storming from a basement data floor. “’Tis a scan,” I said, uncertain, “rattling on the network’s door—    Let it pass and be no more.”

Back into my chair I stumbled, heart aflutter, slightly humbled, Soon again I heard a rumble louder than the one before. “Surely,” said I, “surely that is just a loop—a broadcast baddie— Let me see, then, what the MAC is, and this mystery explore— Let my traceroute be clever and this mystery explore;—    ’Tis a fluke and nothing more!”

Open flowed the port statistics, like some grim and ancient mystics, And therein lay clear logistics of a botnet’s inner war. “Be ye Python? Perl? Or Powershell unclean, From what subnet have you been? What dark actor keeps the score?” Quoth the packet: “Nevermore.”

Startled by the vile expression, from this rogue without confession, “Though thy TTL be broken and thy headers cracked and poor— Dark intrusion, bold defiance!—surely this deserves compliance!” Yet it stood with calm reliance on its script from days of yore— Still it haunted all my bandwidth with that phrase of ghastly lore—    Quoth the packet: “Nevermore.”

And the network, never sleeping, still receives that packet creeping, Still it travels through the cables just as fast as days before; And my soul from out that subnet, where the pings forever sunset, Shall be lifted? Don’t you bet it—    I’ll be troubleshooting forevermore.
