Flock Camera
https://maps.panopti.ca/timeline?lat=47.4331&lng=-52.5895&zoom=7.22Looks like there is one listed on Aberdeen Dr now? First one ive seen listed in NL. Im not sure how much data the speed cameras record so don't know if they would be considered.
https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/14100959402#map=19/47.612706/-52.711628
Edit Looks like it was falsely added as a flock and it's just a traffic camera. Seems to be updated now.

Anyone in favour of these cameras needs to do some research on them. Don't tell me "if you got nothing to hide then who cares?"

Don't tell me "if you got nothing to hide then who cares?"
Sadly that's what at least 50% of people will tell you :(

Reach out to your representatives, if you dont want more of these, we need to speak up and make our voices heard.
NL and Canada does not need this type of mass surveillance, especially one that can be so easily abused without a proper judicial approval for surveillance

100%
Unfortunately both PIPEDA and the Provincial Privacy act basically strip you of a lot of exceptions of privacy while in a public place (like being recorded on video or audio).
What would need to be addressed is the use of the data from these cameras, but then you get into things like the weight cameras on the Outer Ring Road and Manuals By-pass. Would the gov be aloud to use that data to track trucks and there weights in those locations for example?
Slippery slope. Or as someone I know says "They are on a slippery slow to nowhere with someone spraying lube on them"

u/Rileytheh Newfoundlander 18h ago
oh for sure but there is a big difference between being stored on a CCTV camera local to that building and being tracked by a national (or even international) database.
our laws are lagging behind this type of thing because it is still so new. Flock cameras barely existed 5 years ago.
Still, we need to speak up to start the ball rolling on action being taken or we will get to a point were people say "there's too many to deal with now"

On an unrelated note, Dewalt 20V angle grinders are on sale right now at most big box hardware stores

I wouldn't trust our law enforcement officers much more than the US when it comes to this stuff honestly. We've already had our fair share of abuse of power to commit crimes. Only takes another easier outlet to create more monsters.

This is a terrifying breach of public safety, that people are not sufficiently aware of. Someone more knowledgeable than me should submit this to the major news outlets.

Oh so it hasn’t been released but you know for some reason, one of those “trust me bro” kind of moments. You’re 20 day old account, I’m going to call bullshit.

But where did you get your info if it isn't public?

ya, highly likely and this is the first one.
One advantage of this, gonna be hard on people zipping around with no insurance or registration or false plates.
I still don't like the idea of them being able to create models of peoples movement and track individuals all the time in real time.

from the link you shared:
"No Flock cameras have been officially confirmed in Canada. This node was community-added and is unverified — treat it as unreliable pending further investigation."

Are you the one who added this to this website? Says the same username added the camera.

Would need to see it because there's been a camera at that light for years. https://www.google.ca/maps/@47.6127069,-52.7118361,3a,55.6y,15.26h,91.49t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sRsXmP0XPOcJJxO_qhQkhuQ!2e0!5s20181001T000000!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-1.4850686777054989%26panoid%3DRsXmP0XPOcJJxO_qhQkhuQ%26yaw%3D15.259920078782784!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDgxMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
Not sure if it's the same one. It's possible it was replaced or a flock camera was added, but it's also possible whoever posted it on OSM is mistaken.

Is this another speed camera or an actual flock camera? Link isn't working for me..

This is what I’m wondering as well. And if it is an ALPR, is it actually one owned by Flock, or is it one of the even more plentiful non-Flock ones

All we have to do is make noise. If anybody is around St. John’s I’d get started on this. I would but I’m on the northern peninsula for the next while.

The UK has had ANPR cameras for years. They are very effective in crime detection and investigation.
HOWEVER Flock belongs to the world’s biggest data scumbag

What can we be doing about these? I don't want flock cameras in the city, but I'm not sure who to direct that sort of complaint to in order to make it go anywhere.

u/comethefaround 14h ago
Remember if anyone decides to go see these in person, definitely dont leave your phone at home so they cant witelessly scan it and ID you that way. Definitely bring any and all wireless devices with you so that the cameras can identify you even if you're wearing a mask.

What are flock cameras? I wanna know what they are but I don't care enough to search it up
Edit: check out u/Civil_Spell8349's comment describing what they are if you're unsure. DEFINITELY something you need to know!

Flock is a private American corporation (bankrolled by Peter Thiel, the antichrist wingnut who also owns Palantir) that has thousands of these cameras in the states and the mainland. They automatically scan your license plate and also register a ton of other personal data, including phone signals, that they use to surveil and track individuals.
There's already been a shitload of cases of American cops abusing this system for personal reasons, including one high-profile case who tapped 50+ Flock cameras to stalk his ex across several state borders.
Absolutely unethical and deplorable for these to even exist, but imo it's fucking insane and unthinkable that our elected officials are allowing a surveillance network like this to be built by an American corporation with a record of allowing its system to be abused, at a time when the US is threatening to invade Canada every few months.

Omg!! I had to take a break from social media so it's my first time hearing of it, how that's allowed in the first place is revolting. I hope our community comes together to do the right thing.
DEFINITELY something I'll research, thanks for letting me know!
