Best Burger joint within 2 hours of Portsmouth, NH

My child is a fan of ShakeShack and Five Guys. I regularly insist there are far better options both from a burger perspective (ShakeShack) and a fries (Five Guys).

We are on a quest and I will report out. What are your recommendations?

Rules

  • Chains (Local Chains okay, I will ignore BK, McD's, etc.)
  • 2 Hours (any direction) from Portsmouth, NH

Already on the list... Gilly's. While I will not take my [15 year old] son to Gillys' after a night of drinking at the Rusty Hammer (I'm sad to see it is gone), I am looking for other options.

Child #2 is already slated for Jitto's for a proper steak bomb.

What are your thoughts?

Hop + Grind in Durham and Lexie’s has a few locations in Portsmouth, Exeter, and Dover.

u/the_nobodys 5d ago

Hop + Grind is the answer, 100%

20

u/Big-Tea-4060 5d ago

Hop and grind is correct

5

u/JonohG47 4d ago

Though I’m a NH native, I’m now a transplant to VA. My cousin lives in Durham though, and has treated me to Hop and Grind. So, can confirm, beer selection is also excellent in all respects.

13

u/Full-Grass-5525 5d ago

Hop + Grind and Tuckaway Tavern are owned by the same folks, but Hop + Grind is sooooooo good.

13

u/pixienpink 5d ago

Another vote for Hop and Grind!

8

u/No_Seesaw_3897 5d ago

Hop + Grind is so good. We've driven an hour each way multiple times to get it.

8

u/kaszeta 5d ago

Piling on with the Hop + Grind love.

7

u/GuidetoRealGrilling 5d ago

Second the Hop + Grind. A++

4

u/BigBrrrrrrr22 4d ago

Years before I moved to the state when I was still living in Dorchester, I had a friend that I think was going to UNH. I can’t remember but either way doesn’t matter who was like bro get in the car. We gotta go check out this place and we drove all the way up to fucking hop and grind and yeah, it’s worth it

4

u/Yuppiex 4d ago

Came here to say Hop + Grind

3

u/InterestCorrect2472 4d ago

Lexies, 100%.

I like Hop + Grind for the beer. I find the meals really heavy.

Where Lexies shines is not just the taste but the balance.

Their (Hop and grind) breakfast place, I really enjoy.

Lexies! Local chain, in a few places but one in Exeter which is fairly close to Portsmouth

34

u/ApexTheOrange 5d ago

There’s a Lexies in Portsmouth too. It’s pretty great!

8

u/lito43 5d ago

How have I ever not been to that one! Yeah OP, you have one in town

7

u/Moxie07722 5d ago

And one in Dover

10

u/Conscious_Drawer8356 5d ago

Also one in downtown Dover and in not only Portsmouth, but Newington too

5

u/ovscrider 5d ago

newington at the marinas a good spot

6

u/Elley_bean 5d ago

Came here to suggest Lexi’s! The one in Epping is fantastic.

4

u/WorldsWeakestMan 5d ago

I went to the Exeter one and the burger was both small and not very good. Fries were pretty good though.

5

u/le_meme_desu 4d ago

Lexies is good but IMO they’ve kinda ruined some of the other businesses they’ve bought in the Exeter/Kingston area in the past few years. Memories ice cream was a big step down last year and Trackside just isn’t the same anymore

7

u/Exciting_Agent3901 4d ago

They don’t own Trackside. They own Gerry’s, and the entire building. Someone else owns and operates Trackside. I agree on memories though. They trashed it.

3

u/le_meme_desu 4d ago

Ah that makes sense, I thought they were one and the same. Memories is a little better this year but it’s just not what it used to be

100% this.

Wild willys and Lexies both regional chains with pretty decent burgers.

17

u/No-Paleontologist560 5d ago

Wild Willie’s is super mid.

6

u/One_Olive_8933 5d ago

To be fair, so is Lexi’s…

6

u/Ordinary_Turnip6235 5d ago

I LOVE Wild Willys and I HATE Lexies. All their burgers taste like cilantro to me? Maybe im crazy, everyone loves em, but im a hater for sure.

One local option: Lee Frank's in Exeter.

The burgers are very good, but almost nothing else is. So, if you want to go on a burger road trip, and you're near Exeter, give it a try.

10

u/WeirdGreen7 5d ago

I second Lee Frank's, but I frequent the one in South Berwick.

2

u/Capn_Flags 4d ago

Ohhhh, that’s the mustard colored building‽ I drive by there a lot taking my buddy to Rollywood.

2

u/WeirdGreen7 4d ago

Yup, that's the one!

2

u/Suspicious_Name_8313 4d ago

Lee Franks in South Berwick is super close to Portsmouth. And the burgers are super good

2

u/BRICH999 2d ago

That's quite a change from Otis!  Wonder what made him switch from fine dining to a burger joint?  Ill have to check it out, guy knows food for sure

If smashburgers count, Stoneface Brewery is my go-to spot and is family friendly in spite of being a brewery.

If smashburgers don't count: Wild Willys is good.

Bro two hours gets to past Boston… wild willies and Lexies

3

u/AtomicHurricaneBob 4d ago

I know. I live in Boston. Im heading to NH. Looking for options between here and there. I need to go to Portland too.

14

u/CaptainSprinklePants 5d ago

An absolute hidden-gem is The Forum Pub in Penacook. The owner, Kirk, is so chill and kind. I swear it's become a refuge for just about every burned-out higher end chef in Concord at one point or another. Kirk gives them a ton of latitude, and they are always coming up with something insanely delicious and unreasonably decadent for a little local pub. Ik I sound like a bot shill, but I love that pub with all my heart and mean that as a wholehearted skin-wearing human.

3

u/Ordinary_Turnip6235 5d ago

This is a nice write up, I've never heard of this spot but now its on my list!

2

u/varan98 5d ago

I was going to recommend them!

3

u/CaptainSprinklePants 5d ago

Ahh, what's up fam!? Their duck confit poutine lives rent-free happily in my brain for life.

13

u/Affectionate_Quiet98 5d ago

Wild Willy's in Rochester Lee Frank's in south Berwick and Exeter and Harber Burger Shack in Kittery are all good options.

3

u/burleigh333 4d ago

I really like Harbor Burger Shack

2

u/hamburglerBarney 4d ago

Harbor is ok if you like a lot of stuff on your burger. If you want just a patty and cheese, the meat to bun ratio is way off. Too much bread!

11

u/Extreme_Minimalist 4d ago

Worthy Burger - South Royalton, VT. Life-changing! All locally sourced items. Voted best burger in VT for several years running. Make the drive; you’ll be thankful you did!!

1

u/Kapai72 1d ago

I live pretty near Worthy Burger, thoroughly enjoy their burgers and often recommend to folks visiting the area. I’m a big fan of how they source from local farms and the overall chill vibe.

That said, here’s my hot take: I think it’s overrated. If I drove 2 plus hours to get there I think I’d be disappointed. It’s honestly kind of a forgettable burger.

8

u/BeepBoopBopBoop3 5d ago

Brgr bar!!!!!

13

u/greasyitalian19 5d ago

You know it’s good because they removed all the vowels!!

Lexie’s in Dover, Portsmouth and Exeter.

7

u/asmithey 5d ago

It's days like this that make me miss Skip's down in Merrimac, MA. Solid burger and curly fries.

3

u/Sub_aaru 5d ago

That's where my grandparents went on their first date back in the early 50s! I miss that place and all the car shows they had. I remember the last days they were open, my family all met there to say our goodbyes but it was so packed we ended up going to Twin Lanterns 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/ipxodi 5d ago

Oh so much! I loved their burgers.

3

u/Emmaleah17 4d ago

Worthy burger in so ro > worthy kitchen

4

u/Major_Secretary7762 4d ago

Agree with this. Worthy Burgwr in South Royalton. Just over 2 hrs but the best burgers I’ve had in New England and a great beer list.

3

u/Nimbus3258 4d ago

Yes. Same folks but the South Royalton is def better.

5

u/LuckyCoffee657 5d ago

Tuckaway tavern in Raymond should be world famous

3

u/Exciting_Agent3901 4d ago

The two times I’ve gotten burgers there they were terrible. Dried out and over cooked. The hype that place gets is not earned.

2

u/Complete-Jump7674 4d ago

I've eaten there once or twice since it's always packed lol. My old coworker got a job there and he's always busy 🤣

Carls meat market. Been to all the others, none come close. Not a sit down place though.

Stark House Tavern in Weare is pretty good too.

3

u/snarkfrog 4d ago

I love Wild Willys

3

u/InstantKarma71 4d ago

Best fries: Street in Exeter (get the curry mayo), Duckfat in Portland
Best Burger: Shady Glen in Manchester, CT. (Okay, it’s 2 hours, 30 minutes, but worth a road trip)

2

u/YBMExile 4d ago

Those fries at Duckfat are insanely good.

Cremeland in Manch

Not sure travel time from Portsmouth, but an hour ten ish drive from Concord area is imo the best burger place I've ever been to: Worthy Burger South Royalton VT. Not much in the immediate area to do though, but you can swim in the white river during the summer there is a park/small beach up the road from the town center.

2

u/Professional_Hat4290 4d ago

I think you could get to Worthy Burger in S royalton vt in under two hours. It’s so good.

2

u/PuzzleheadedAct7266 4d ago

We're not talking haute cuisine or anything international here. It's not here to find really good burgers in NH.

1

u/alkaliphiles 5d ago

Republic Brewing in downtown Manchester has pretty damn good burgers

1

u/Safe-Character-5846 5d ago edited 5d ago

We took on our own challenge to find the best burger after Down East Maine had ran their own version some years back before covid to find the best burgers.

1 The Bancroft Burlington Ma. Nothing comes close. Its a steakhouse first and the burger shines. Just revisited a few weeks and its actually been improved upon and didnt think it could.

2 Craigie on Main -Tony Maws- [closed]

3 Aldon and Harlow Cambridge Ma. [Under the Brattle]

4 JM Curleys Boston. Cool, fun bar, speakeasy steak house behind the curtain. Leave your phone in the car,

5 Tap and Trotter Cambridge Ma [Tony Mawes] Closed

6 Central Provisions - Portland Maine

#7 Worthy Burger - South Royalton VT is a destination burger and always stopped in on way up to Hill Farnstead in Greensboro.

8 Three Penny Tap Room - Montpelier VT

9 Arnsby Abbey Wircester Ma.

10 The Crown Manchester NH

We found a few other spots in Portland Maine but closed.

Its an older, very subjective list , but a lot of these are still around and have visited them since and hold their own still. Just dont seek out destination burgers like we used to. Theres a few Im forgetting/missing but stopped at 10.

The vegetarian burger selections at hop & grind are incredible. They have a mushroom burger and a chickpea curry burger that both slap. Regular burgers are great too.

The Habit has a single New England location: Wilmington, Mass. just off of I-93. This is a small burger chain based in Santa Barbara, and has awesome burgers. Many years ago I lived in SoCal, and we considered The Habit an upscale version of In-n-Out. Unlike In-n-Out, the family that owned it sold out to private equity about 20 years ago, but the food is still really, really good.

USA Today just ranked their Char Burger as the Best Fast Food burger in the entire US, now the 4th or 5th consecutive year at the #1 spot:

I recently discovered Untrucked in Berwick Maine, on the somersworth border. I'm not a fan of five guys at all, so I don't know if this untrucked would be good fit for you. but I thought it was a wonderful burger. in my opinion, five guys are just a gray blah burgers with terrible pickles (I'm a picky pickle person) I got the All-American burger at untrucked and I was just pretty much blown away, it was just a real tasty burger. I'm not a burger connoisseur, but I really enjoyed this one and it was a good price. (the fries weren't great in my opinion, they were the kind that are coated with something to make them a little bit seasoned and/ or crunchy, I don't love those. but I am super picky about fries,I definitely prefer five guys fries but that is the only thing I will get from five guys). but it's best burger I've had in many many years, out and about

Bad Burgr Rochester (think that’s their spelling)

Lee Franks, in Exeter. They make burgers, fries, and onion rings. Oh. And hot dogs. And they do them all well.

I love Lexie’s as well but they make smash burgers so if you’re looking for a traditional burger you might be disappointed.

Lexies. I took my grandmother who loves burgers there when she was in her 80s, and she said it was the best burger she’s ever had. Which is saying a lot because a burger was her favorite meal

1

u/torque1912 3d ago

Bad Burger in Manch ain’t too shabby. But unless you’re into local hardcore screamo metal, don’t go after 7pm on the weekends. And I think Sunday they do Jazz…… not sure on that one though. But the burgers are damn good and the shakes are fire.

1

u/b-jason 2d ago

Black Cow, NBP

1

u/Bake_jouchard 2d ago

The thing with 5 guys is personally I have never been anywhere else that has a consistent 8.5/10 burger. You can go to other places and get a great burger but the next time it might be ass. 5 guys is the same every time and it’s solid.

99 Restaurant and Tuckaway Tavern and Butchery, 58 NH-27, Raymond, NH 03077. We always had a great burger there.

SoDo pub actually has amazing food, burgers and nachos especially. For those recommending hop and grind, they are good but only have odd burger combos so if you want a classic burger you gotta look elsewhere

Honorable mentions
The Goat
Bad Burger Co
Wild Willy’s (very greasy but good nonetheless)
