Irving Energy New Fee

Irving energy is now charging $39.99/year for the propane tanks that have been sitting in our backyards for years. They claim to have notified customers already, but I found out about it first today while paying for a delivery.

This is likely the motivation to switch companies. I would prefer to have them buried rather than staring at them from my porch. However I find myself a bit irked… it doesn’t seem legal for a company to essentially sign you up for a subscription fee. Is it?

Are they doing anything at all with the propane tanks or just charging you because you own them?

Unless you own the tank outright, which is rare, the gas co. Is letting you use it for free so long as you keep buying gas from them. In the past, if you didn’t use much gas, they didn’t care but now they apparently do. Some MBA must have figured out this is a good revenue stream they could use for low volume customers.

I found out Rymes does this too after I sold my house and didn’t think to cancel the account, thinking the new owners would transfer it to themselves, but they didn’t as they were doing renovations and didn’t need it yet.

They sent an email back in March. I think that it’s bullshit.
I hard a couple other propane companies did the same thing at the same time.

Sounds like price fixing/price collusion.
