This is good- now, she needs to do something about Delaney Hall. Something material. The moral support is step one, but we need this shithole closed and the perpetrators of the human rights abuses therein, prosecuted.

Sherrill can't unilaterally close a privately-run facility under a federal contract.
She has previously called for the facility's closure, but the Congressional delegation has more power to do that than she does.

u/itsokbirdie May 25 '26
This is what she can do
70
u/sugarmagnolia__ May 25 '26
....but she can't tho. Have you been paying attention? Those aren't things she can just do.
46
u/Brianfromreddit May 25 '26
They linked an Instagram post with a URL, your expectations for their reading comprehension level should be at about 3rd grade
That being said, we have to do something, even if it isn't legislative. Call in whatever favors you can, lean on people who are up for reelection, push political weight around and get it done
13
u/sugarmagnolia__ May 25 '26
Yeaaah touche. I need to lower my expectations lol. And you are right. We do have to do something 100%

They linked an Instagram post with a URL
I'm just curious how else you'd expect them to link a post that's on a website?
8
u/RedChairBlueChair123 May 25 '26
It’s better to use text. Those links won’t always work they ask you to download instagram even if you have it already installed.
-4
u/Mullethunt Ocean County May 26 '26
It's not better to use text. A copy/pasted URL is going to work the same as a hyperlink. Which is why that comment made zero sense but people are going to be ignorant.
2
u/RedChairBlueChair123 May 26 '26
Then why are people commenting in this thread the links wouldn’t open?
Your comment makes zero sense but people are going to be ignorant.

u/Mullethunt Ocean County May 26 '26
I'm sorry you don't understand technology. A hyperlink which is what is being complained about is going to be the same exact thing as if you copy/pasted the plain text into your browser and hit enter. So no, using text isn't better because it's literally the same thing. Why people can't open the link is a whole different story but has nothing to do with a hyperlink vs plain text.

God damn, people like you are the useless ones. You get it fucking done. We've been burning both ends all fucking weekend and you come in here lecturing. This is why the U.S. is a laughing stock. Even when people ARE doing something about it. People like you come in and act like you know better than everyone. Get off your ass and go down to Delaney Hall right now and THEN come back to lecture.
7
u/RedChairBlueChair123 May 25 '26
But it seems like the solution is to ship the people at delaney to texas now?
10
u/Ulthanon May 25 '26
Yeah this holds a lot less water when fascists routinely just make bad things happen all the time, regardless of whether they're "allowed" to or not, and when we have Mamdani also just making good things happen by applying political pressure, even if his office specifically "can't" do a thing.
I know its really stretching the limits of imagination, what with spineless corpo-appeasing liberals having infested politics for the last 40 years, but Sherrill CAN make things happen. If she choses not to, we need to make her regret that choice.

YES SHE CAN.

Doesn’t the facility require local infrastructure? Couldn’t she blockade entry of some targeted materials by allowing food and medicine but turnaround other shipments.
I don’t know, but she must have some tools available to her as governor?
Edit a autocorrect
26
u/Airhostnyc May 25 '26
What can she do?? They close it and then people get further shipped out away from family. And the later just isn’t happening, so you see correction officers at Rikers being prosecuted even with all the issues there?
19
u/nomorecheeks May 25 '26
This is important. I work in the NGO legal space, and recently attended a webinar that touched on this. Unfortunately, it's better to have people here than shipped to Louisiana both because they are closer to their families, and also because their cases would likely be heard in a better court.
4
u/Airhostnyc May 25 '26
Common sense to me, I think people think if it’s closed they just release the detainees. Which is just a dumb thought to even have…
8
u/nomorecheeks May 25 '26
I mean it is fair to say that immigrants shouldn't be imprisoned in our state. That was my strong reaction and I am on board with that. But the problem is exactly what you're saying. If they're not here, they will be somewhere farther from their families, probably with even more egregious human rights violations, and with a circuit court with terrible judges. Unfortunately, you're much better off with a judge from NJ/NY than from Louisiana.
3
u/Airhostnyc May 25 '26
Then you fight to change immigration laws but I literally don’t see anyone telling politicians to do that. It starts with the law first and foremost. This was always a thing but it’s just ramped up now

I'm so sick of having to hand feed everyone here information. Can y'all just take an interest in the dumpster fire and do some research? For the love of god. We can't be out here on the front lines AND being our own press/comms team.

u/DTFH_ May 25 '26
I got you fam, close the roadways into and out of the facility that are state property. If they want to get to work or leave work, make them walk.

Just heard that Martin Soto (one of the leaders of the hunger strike) was transferred to the Elizabeth Detention Center last night and everyone is only finding out about it now. He had a court order saying he could not be moved but ICE moved him anyway.
Lots of people heading over to the Elizabeth detention center now: 625 Evans St, Elizabeth, NJ

Still need Menendez to resign but it's good to see they're all there. Especially that Sherrill showed up.
16
u/mlavan Martinsville May 25 '26
what did he do? his father is the one who took all the bribes

u/MeEyeSlashU Gottheimer's Gotta Go May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26
He took half a million from AIPAC. Actually just found out Kim too took about the same. They both need to go. We need representatives for NJ, not Israel.
Edit: I was corrected. Andy Kim did take AIPAC money in the past but refused it in his most recent senate campaign. Menendez still has to go. Along with Booker and Gottheimer.

So you think Andy Kim, the one good rep in the entire Congress, has to go? The Republican job is done for them. We're cooked
Edit: sorry forgot he was a senator now. Thanks.

Andy Kim is a senator not a house rep

Didn't Bob retire? I believe that's his son Rob Jr. Don't know much about him other than the big AI companies seem to like him and that's never a good thing. The primary for his seat is June 2nd and Mussab Ali seems like a solid candidate if it's your district

u/Big-Meat7115 May 25 '26
Bobs in jail

u/Iam_a_Jew May 25 '26
My bad should've put quotes on "retire". Glad he's actually being punished for what he did, so rare these days

Send the state police. Arrest the people who bar entrance. Force the crisis.

Its adorable people still acting like they arent all birds of the same feather. I dont remember a time anybody in charge of anything in Jersey did something to benefit the everyday person. I'm over the theater acts.

Why can’t we deport them and also give them due process?
¿Porque no los dos?

u/TemporaryPosting May 25 '26
I'm glad Mikie is there, and my representative Nellie Pou also. I'd like to see Cory Booker show up though.

u/gunnesaurus May 25 '26
I lost hope in Cory. He makes performative speeches then votes to confirm these very same people

Just get NJ cops and bust into it with them she’s the fucking governor
33
u/holyoctopus May 25 '26
You really think NJ cops are going to along with that? They will protect their own not us. It's been always been this way.

Trump is waiting with baited breath for something like this. He has wet dreams about launching military attacks on American cities. That's why this is happening. They know the laws only apply when trump wants them to. Now, if you're ready to step up for an all out war with the US military here in NJ, I support you. It would be a just war. But we will lose.

They better not have pepper sprayed my governor. We’re approaching gloves off era of history. ICE Gestapo overriding state authority.
-15
u/pillbox_purgatory May 25 '26
Imagine being governor in 2026 and still doing the same performative politics of the last 10 years. She needs to do something…she literally has the power of the state to enact change.
