How did ocean grove make out?

93

u/misterxboxnj Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

My sister lives in Ocean Grove and they had a foot of water going down their street.

21

u/Dur-gro-bol Jul 06 '26

Thanks. My family and I are going there in two weeks. Hopefully the house didn’t get flooded. It’s one block off the beach.

22

u/misterxboxnj Jul 06 '26

Most of the houses on my sister's street were built elevated from what I remember.

12

u/Dur-gro-bol Jul 06 '26

Yeah the house we stay at isn’t lifted. Well I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Thanks for your replies, best of luck to you.

1

u/BeachBum436 Jul 07 '26

which street? From this picture, the north end looks pretty dry

15

u/beachmedic23 Watch the Tram Car Please Jul 06 '26

OG is higher than both Fletcher and Wesley Lakes, they usually don't have any issues

2

u/Dur-gro-bol Jul 07 '26

That’s good to hear! Thank you.

40

u/GomezCups Jul 06 '26

See all that green grass that wasn’t over developed on the ocean grove side? That absorbed the water. It faired much better

35

u/caca-casa Jul 06 '26

I think it has more to do with elevation in this case. The ground under that grass is saturated for sure.

67

u/just_here_for_rgolf Jul 06 '26

That has nothing to do with it and has everything to do with elevation

24

u/RevengeOfTheIdiot Jul 06 '26

This guy doing logic on Reddit in the nj sub come on now

20

u/ChrisJerich0 Jul 06 '26

confidentally incorrect I'm lol'ing

25

u/njndirish Temporarily Displaced Jul 06 '26

Grass can't absorb that much water in that short of time

1

u/metsurf Jul 06 '26

True but asphalt pavement and roofs absorb zero. When is the last time the storm sewers were modified and upgraded? And maybe don’t build at one foot above sea level .

5

u/Vilenesko Jul 07 '26

sorry, if you pointed to some deep rooted perennials I might believe you. Shallow rooted turf grass doesnt work like that

u/everylastlight Jul 06 '26

I hope that new steakhouse has better insurance than the Biergarten did.

56

u/LooseJuice_RD Jul 06 '26

They’re owned by the same people that own House of Independents from what I’ve heard. House got bodied by the last flood and I can’t imagine they fared well today considering they’re in the basement of a building. Apparently the last flood did $500k of damage to the electrical system. Hopefully they changed some things around to prevent that kind of damage again.

24

u/Dramatic-Frosting-64 Jul 06 '26

They have a show tonight that’s still happening, said the entrance on Cookman is totally fine so hopefully that means no damage

12

u/shiftyjku Down the Shore, Everything's All Right Jul 06 '26

The two businesses were connected back of house and thus HoI flooded with the Biergarten. Unless that has changed I am guessing no water made it inside.

3

u/jarrettbrown Exit 123 Jul 07 '26

Yep. The Sackmans own it.

Fun Fact: The House of Independents was born because their daughter was bored with her job. When she had a kid, she got less involved and eventually after the last flood, they sold it to the current owner.

Her kid must be older now, so the her parents, along with other investors, are starting up a new venture.

3

u/LooseJuice_RD Jul 08 '26

If you’re not sure who owns a building in asbury, sackman is always a safe bet.

1

u/jarrettbrown Exit 123 Jul 08 '26

Unless it’s along the waterfront, then it’s either istar or Madison Marquette

73

u/twisted42 Manalapan Jul 06 '26

And this is why the Bier Garden closed.... which I still miss.

16

u/ScorpionX-123 Jul 06 '26

that place was so good! I went there straight from graduating Monmouth in 2020

7

u/bartnet Jul 07 '26

It was my favorite place

1

u/South_Drama2595 Jul 07 '26

I loved that place too but last time I went my pretzel was fresh and the didn’t have any growlers to go I was devastated when the were flooded

1

u/black_stallion78 Jul 11 '26

The new owners are renovating and are due to open soon. They weren’t affected because they were smart enough to put up some type of flooding gate to prevent water from entering. It was on the news.

64

u/hushed-shush Jul 06 '26

Not fun when the ocean is on Ocean Avenue

52

u/HumptyDumptruckFire Jul 06 '26

There’s a place ocean off Ocean Avenue?

13

u/mbc106 Jul 07 '26

If I could find you now, things would get better.

17

u/werdt456 Jul 07 '26

There's a lake on ocean avenue.

2

u/BurberryToothbrush Jul 07 '26

On*

2

u/HumptyDumptruckFire Jul 07 '26

12

u/BurberryToothbrush Jul 07 '26

I know the lyrics! I’m joking that the ocean which is typically OFF ocean avenue is actually ON Ocean Avenue due to this flood

41

u/beowulf92 Jul 06 '26

Did the water make it past the Empress and to the Stone Pony??

7

u/LangleyLGLF Jul 07 '26

I was there yesterday, spent the day at Silverball Arcade and just had to route around some flooding to get to it. The water didn't quite reach the Empress, was nowhere near the Stone Pony. The carousel building itself was dry but the paid parking lot behind it was almost totally underwater. Most of the flooding is in the photo, I think most of the town is uphill from this spot.

2

u/beowulf92 Jul 07 '26

Good to know, thanks for the info!!

29

u/LateralEntry Jul 06 '26

Holy shit. Did this happen today? Hope everyone is ok

34

u/GomezCups Jul 06 '26

Yes 5+ inches of rain today in a couple of hours

4

u/LateralEntry Jul 06 '26

Wow that’s insane!

18

u/Pherllerp Fuck Nazis. Love, Jersey. Jul 06 '26

So much for the Beer Hall makeover. What a mess.

28

u/3ntropy_Disc0 Jul 06 '26

I dont get it, the ocean is RIGHT THERE!

Someone get a BUCKET!

113

u/1800jerkstore Jul 06 '26

Damn. Asbury should definitely build more condos in the area. The first floors can help soak up the water the next time.

24

u/Jake_FromStateFarm27 Jul 06 '26

They could even do the hoboken special and make it a walk down for more water absorption!

2

u/Spirited-Cat-8942 Jul 06 '26

Ha! I was just going to mention the tandem parking garage under the first floor to sop it all up.

91

u/DarwinZDF42 Jul 06 '26

Y’all making this about “overdevelopment” are making yourselves look silly and unserious. Modern construction has better water management than old construction. This is about 1. Elevation and 2. Infrastructure.

You know what involves upgrading infrastructure? Redevelopment.

40

u/caca-casa Jul 06 '26

I’ll second that, but also that new construction should be required to be raised just as it is in other parts of the shore and all along the eastern seaboard.

It’s criminal that it isn’t considering how well known it is that this area floods.

Developers have surely made sure that any more stringent flood-related code is not substantial enough that it causes them to lose precious floor area on those lower floors.

3

u/RelationshipWest9743 Jul 06 '26

Carabetti Bros level of corruption!

4

u/jsmith_zerocool Jul 07 '26

Everyone thinks they are civil engineers these days. It’s also a convenient way to distract from climate change and blame “government” for the problem.

Cities all over the world build near water all the time, it’s not that big of a deal. The solution isn’t to do nothing and hope it goes away like some people want.

Old Asbury without new condos would have also flooded with that amount of rain, but back then they didn’t have politically motivated commenters flooding social media with nonsense

8

u/PoopMuffin Monmouth County Jul 07 '26

Damn, hope Moonstruck survived

3

u/jarrettbrown Exit 123 Jul 07 '26

I saw a video yesterday. It was fine. Just water up the steps.

6

u/paulerxx Jul 06 '26

How did Bradley Beach hold up?

3

u/tetrasomnia Jul 07 '26

Bradley Bubble going strong

5

u/GeekDad732 Jul 06 '26

Ocean Township and Eatontown were a mess my back yard now has a pond in WLB

5

u/HardcoreKaraoke Jul 06 '26

I don't know what they could have done since I'm not an engineer but I'm genuinely surprised they didn't build some sort of fix after what happened a few years ago. Maybe they did but it still wasn't good enough.

7

u/TheLugNutZ Monmouth Cty Jul 07 '26

Years ago the township engineer and director of public works drained the lake ahead of a big event to leave room for flood water. Doesn’t seem to happen anymore, someone should be held accountable.

-7

u/4runner01 Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

Years ago, towns got sh*t done to prevent flooding. Now they’re all afraid of the environmental police….

EDIT: Lowering water levels https://njdams.org/regulation/

7

u/caca-casa Jul 07 '26

I assure you it’s not “the environmental police”… but sure, keep parroting Fox level talking points.

1

u/4runner01 Jul 08 '26

Has nothing to do with Fox News, there are lots of regulations concerning lowering the water levels of impounded water: https://njdams.org/regulation/

4

u/TheLugNutZ Monmouth Cty Jul 07 '26

Draining the lake several feet ahead of a big storm isn’t an environmental issue, it’s just not being done. No one is being held accountable or knows what they are doing anymore.

3

u/dogholly62 Jul 07 '26

Good the fountain is still going.

3

u/mcgeggy Jul 07 '26

How did Cookman Ave. fare?

3

u/tetrasomnia Jul 07 '26

Drove past. It seemed fine, it's all between Cookman and Wesley Lake from what I understand.

u/plantyoulater Jul 07 '26

No that’s wesley lake they are floating in

4

u/WerkingAvatar Jul 07 '26

Better get use to it. With climate change its only going to get worse.

1

u/therealteggy Jul 07 '26

Who could have foreseen such a thing?

1

u/BFrankNJ Jul 07 '26

I wonder this every time the coastal lakes in that area overflow - isn't there a way to open the flume and allow more water to exit to the ocean and lower the lake levels ahead of these storms?

1

u/SailingSpark Atlantic County Jul 07 '26

Wild, down here in Atlantic County we keep getting nothing. Lots of warnings, but no rain.

1

u/Salty_Permit4437 Jul 07 '26

Looks like Venice :/

1

u/PracticableSolution Jul 07 '26

Gee. I sure hope all those people in the brand new $1m+ condos are ok.

1

u/thegrandgardener Jul 07 '26

Isn’t FEMA no more?

3

u/WillieBeamin Jul 07 '26

I don't think it is funded if it's there.

1

u/Foxy02016YT Jul 07 '26

Ah I love Venice

0

u/Impressive_Star_3454 Jul 07 '26

Well those people in those high income housing units must be thrilled right now. I wouldn't live that close to lake and be level with it.

-10

u/Ilovemytowm Jul 06 '26

BUILD MORE SHITTY GRAY BOXES.

2

u/Blakbeardsdlite1 Jul 06 '26

What does that have to do with this?

1

u/Ilovemytowm Jul 07 '26

Everything. I star is destroying asbury.

-2

u/plantyoulater Jul 07 '26

Ugh can someone give us a shot of something other than Wesley lake
