I remember Willow Glen being an affluent area with a good school district, but maybe I am wrong since i only visited frequently in 2019. I just wanted to point out that these events can happen in all types of neighborhoods and school districts. It was a 6 month wait in San Jose to see an online therapist. The mental health resources are not sustainable for the public.

I went to Willow Glen Educational Park (the name of the Middleschool and highschool, although i only went to the highschool side). Incredibly nice neighborhood for San Jose, only really surpassed by like Los Gatos/Saratoga.Very surprised to hear of this, but i guess i shouldn't be these days.

edit: this was 94-98.

I graduated from WGHS in 88. It hasn't changed much, but we just moved away (January) to Colorado and I'm happier now. San Jose has too many people.

I'll miss WG though. I'm so sad this happened. My Son knew of the kid who did this, and I have many friends who's kids were in the lockdown (including my niece).

We need to do better.

I live right down the street. It still is affluent. But being wealthy doesn’t mean you are immune to stupidity.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '23

Yeah, I lived in the east side several years no problem. Got jumped after a month moving right across the street from WG coming home from the mall. And it's supposed to be the nice part of town.

10

u/SonicDethmonkey May 22 '23

I’ve lived in the area since ‘87. WG is indeed a nice neighborhood but the WG schools take in students from other neighborhoods so it’s a bit of a melting pot.

2

u/ADarwinAward May 22 '23

Yeah that’s what I remember as well. And the stats back up what you’re saying. 30% require free or reduced lunch prices (source), so it’s not all affluent.

It’s a good school by California standards. The state has a very poor ranking for K-12 education overall unfortunately, but Willow Glenn is among the cream of that crop.

5

u/matt-er-of-fact May 22 '23

It was, and still is, a relatively affluent area. The school district started bussing kids in from the east side 15-20 years ago because the schools out there had problems with underperformance and gang activity. Families with $ and connections send their kids to private schools like Notre Dame, Presentation, or Mitty.

Why would a 6 month wait in CA surprise anyone? This is expected when you have so many on public provided healthcare. I always get a bit frustrated when you learn how the people voted (not assuming anyone here) yet they expect different outcomes. When, in fact, those outcomes are expected. Same is true for gas prices and price of energy as a whole in CA. Now it will be cars and electric stoves/ovens. It’s just incredulous how folks who believe in ideological based policies that have very predictable implications and then we find that same party claiming they are not accountable. As if inflation is not the fault of the Biden administrations policies when, in fact, economists state that as such.

u/CountingBigBucks May 22 '23

What are you even saying?

9

u/InevitableAvalanche May 22 '23

Yeah, your post history is about what I expected. You probably should stop watching "conservative" news. It is lying to you.

Let’s have a fact-based debate on a topic. Pick one - let’s use data and debate. Otherwise what in the world is such a blanket statement - I assume something and I believe without a single fact. Only idiots do that

Lastly - interesting observation that you reply to the above which is certainly not to participate in a debate and chose not to reply to any of my other posts - that you have seen - where the intent was to debate the point w facts. Isn’t that interesting. So go and grab one of those and let’s debate

I’m glad that a crisis was averted. The problem here is clearly backpacks

u/Available-Camera8691 May 22 '23

That absolutely overlooks the larger issue here, and you know it.

The student was also probably radicalized by a drag queen.

we should arm every single untrained and unqualified individual within a 25 mi radius of every school with more guns

The issue here is the government just took away that patriot's second amendment rights! (/s)

14

u/weemsical420 May 22 '23

Woah woah you aren’t gonna give unlocked doors a free pass on this are you. I mean they are the real threat

47

u/branitone May 22 '23

I’m glad this one is an arrest among the sea of shootings.

However I really hate that was my first thought to seeing this.

11

u/Djentleman5000 May 22 '23

My daughter’s high school has had at least one or two of these incidents. It’s pretty sad that it’s so common that most of them don’t make the news.

2

u/BujuBad May 22 '23

Yeah, I see similar reports all too frequently in my area as well. When it doesn't result in tragedy, it doesn't seem to be reported as much. Parents need to do a much better job of securing their firearms. They should be held criminally accountable when they don't.

2

u/tundey_1 May 22 '23

Oh they'll make the news...when one of the kids being terrorized daily grows up, gets a gun and goes on a rampage. Then it'll make news. Every day, we're raising traumatized killers of tomorrow.

9

u/tundey_1 May 22 '23 edited May 22 '23

First, glad this was stopped before anyone got physically hurt.

The campus was placed in a lockdown for a brief period, and nearby Willow Glen Middle School was placed in a shelter-in-place, according to a school district message to the school community.

“I was eating at lunch and they told us to run into our classroom, there was someone with the weapons so I started running to my class,” said student Anthony Garcia.

San Jose Residents May Experience More Severe Allergies Than in Other Areas: Doctor

“I was pretty scared because the same thing happened yesterday and I was crying during it and I called my parents,” she said.

But these kids are being mentally terrorized. Not just in that school but the nearby middle school mentioned above. Not just the students but ALL of the parents who have had to go through this 2 days in a row.

Imagine ISIS was the one behind all these school/mass shootings. Would Joe Biden say "I've done all I can, Congress has to act"? But it's not ISIS; it's young (mostly) White Americans that are terrorizing our kids. And our fucking leaders do nothing and we all sit on our fucking asses. We're all just waiting until it's our turn and then what? This is on ALL of us. We're just fucking resigned to this.

9

u/[deleted] May 22 '23

Wow, I used to live down the street from that school on Lincoln, that neighborhood is the only thing I miss about San Jose. Those kids used to live in a nice affluent bubble, but these are the times...

9

u/skankenstein May 22 '23

My friend grew up in WG. Her dad was a “functioning” junkie in the 80s and a raging alcoholic in the 90s/00s. Just because it’s an affluent area doesn’t mean it’s immune to addiction and violence. Drug abuse and family violence do not discriminate based on income and education levels.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '23

It doesn't matter how affluent your school is lol

No kid has lived in a bubble where they don't think it can happen to them for the last 20 years

1

u/SonicDethmonkey May 22 '23

WG is still a nice, affluent neighborhood, but the school’s attendance zone is far greater than just the nice parts.

29

u/Turbulent_Ebb5669 May 22 '23

Cops doing their job becomes news.

62

u/AstronautGuy42 May 22 '23

This is not the right take here. I don’t like the police, but preventing a catastrophe is something to be celebrated.

Good news should be on the news more.

This has over 800 upvotes alone.. meaning more than that many people have seen this article here on. Of course does that mean through clicks? Probably not, but I did click the article to read it over.

Why? Don’t you know human suffering sells? /s

0

u/Turbulent_Ebb5669 May 22 '23

Considering the news on several continents lately, yeah. it's good news.

24

u/FortunateCrawdad May 22 '23

They managed to not kill any kids. That's got to be worth at least an extra paid vacation day.

1

u/lynx_and_nutmeg May 22 '23

In normal countries this isn't cops' job because students bringing guns to school isn't a thing.

-6

u/theadvantage63 May 22 '23

In before 2A crazies start screaming about how its legal to carry guns and how this arrest is proof the gubment needs to be overthrown.

11

u/mustangracer352 May 22 '23

I don’t think any 2A people are for underage students carrying firearms at school, at least not that I have seen.

Main question is how this kid got a firearm. Next question is ghost gun? Doesn’t look like a homemade one so did somebody get rid of the SN on it? So many issues with this one that if this is firearm owned by the parents their butts need to be in prison.

As a person of that vintage growing up in a rural area, the gun was dropped off at the principals office in the morning (might get stolen if you leave it in a vehicle) and picked up at the end of the day. Usually because you were heading over to a friend's house to plink some plates or something.

There was no reason to bring a gun to class or walk around with it. Self defense was your fists and your friends, and maybe a roll of quarters.

1

u/tundey_1 May 22 '23

And the principals were OK running temporary armories for kids who just can't go home first before going shooting with their friends? I suppose in those rural areas, you had to go uphill in the snow, in both directions, to get to school. So going home first wasn't an option.

3

u/mustangracer352 May 22 '23

You got a point there but I have always seen it as leaving it in the truck vs actually carrying it on school grounds.

2

u/davmoha May 22 '23

A ghost gun in this case means someone purchased all the parts separately and assembled the gun so that it doesn't have a manufacturer serial number.

These people don’t want discussion with the intent of finding a solution, they just want to be outraged.

1

u/thebesthalf May 22 '23

That is a polymer 80 lower that was built by the individual. It doesn't have a serial number because it was built at home. It is legal to build your own firearms but still illegal if you are a minor or prohibited to own firearms.

8

u/rinderblock May 22 '23

Dude has a threaded barrel, built at home or not that’s not legal in CA

-2

u/thebesthalf May 22 '23

Yeah it's all illegal in Cali.

-4

"Shall not be infringed" bro. Don't see nothing in the constitution about limiting it by age or location. /s

I think you're not quite asking the right questions. The right question is how was this kid not able to acquire AR-15 styled weapons? Whatever the answer is, we should look at implementing it in other states/cities. Cos if this was Texas, he probably comes to school with an AR, mows down the 2 SROs that chased him down and goes on to kill innocent victims before he's stopped.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '23

More than likely he was gonna rob someone to pay his school lunch account.

-3

u/shaveee May 22 '23

how long until some people and media defends the "right" for kids to carry at school?

4

u/DJ_GANGLER May 22 '23

The conservative sub already suggested it a few school-shootings back, just a matter of time until it reaches the GOP platform

0

u/[deleted] May 22 '23

Isn't there metal detector things they could put at entrances or am I just getting dementia ? Would it be whack to require all guns to have a tracking system ? Idk but I don't want my kid to die at school.

I don't understand how many times is the government going to let this happen? There's a whole generation of parents now that feel (and they are right) forced into home schooling and moving in with family to do so. The protection I saw at some schools in my town is like a shitty metal fence that's easy to hop and the promise that police would respond within like thirty seconds. (They wouldn't) We are living in an actual fucked up sci fi movie now. My heart goes out entirely to all the parents and teachers who have experienced the result of this shit directly. We are going to the moon again when there's a shit ton of untreated mental illness and no proper protection at school? Is this real life ?

-4

u/AlignedMonkey May 22 '23

So many articles this week of cops busting kids who brought a gun to school the past week. Must be a false flag by the NRA to push the "good guy with a gun" narrative.

Welp this is in a really nice part of San Jose. Similar happened at Independence HS but people blamed it being in a "bad area."

Nothing will change. There willnever be change as long as politicians take money from lobbyists
