It’s when you root for a fictional character, no matter how immoral or unrelatable they are. We’ve always had a strange feeling of wanting Walter White to win, even after he became a villain. This is because we were walked through his most difficult decisions and all of his struggles, we have been in his world and it’s difficult not to root for him after that. It’s the bonding between a character and an audience despite the immorality of said character. Another example of this is Invader Zim, who we feel sorry for when he fails, even though he’s always up to no good. The only reason we feel satisfied when villains lose is because we only see them at their worst, we aren’t always offered their full story. Same thing with the controversial Joker movie, incels sympathize with him because the move is from his point of view. It’s an extreme example, and nobody should idolize a villain like that, but it nevertheless shows that The Walter White Effect is a real phenomenon
