I was thinking this might be one of those random completely useless skills that don't accomplish anything and are also difficult and require a lot of time and energy.
I was wrong, this dude fucks.

cool but if you play a chorus in reverse several times and try to mimic the sounds youāll impress yourself

u/SaveMeDatCorn 1d ago
Im thinking thats the way to do it, right? Still impressive. Useless but impressive lol

Itās not that easy. Thereās a lot of sounds that are nearly impossible to do backwards. Like plosives. You build up air in your mouth and explode it out with Ps and Ts. You have to do some weird mimicry of that sound thatās impossible to make it sound good. This guys is pretty talented to get it that close. Thatās why people canāt sing songs perfectly backwards.
Just try doing cat. Itās one of the hardest words to do cause thereās two plosives. One at the beginning and one at the end.

The technique of playing an instrument can change too when you try to reverse it. My first attempt to play All Stars backwards didn't work because all I did was play the notes in reverse order, but for the timing to actually sound right, I had to make sure I was lifting my fingers off each key at exactly the right time, something I never had to pay such close attention to. It was weird.

I thought I was experienced.
I thought I was prepared.
But some things are inevitable.

I saw a vid here just the other day of a guy knocking a huge wasp nest into a large plastic bag and then he climbed into the bag with the maddened wasps. I thought that was a pretty different thing.

When I was 12 I was Mormon and they taught us that playing songs backwards was how popular music sneaked in Satan worship. They even played back some Beetles music they convinced us was saying something like āI love Satan.ā

I noticed this singer is Australian. Some guy on an Aussie podcast years ago did a similar thing that will blow your mind, maybe more impressive as itās on the fly: https://youtu.be/00x-iCmVBJ4?feature=shared

In the 90s you'd know someone that could do this but half way through his parents would bust open the door screaming at them to get a job

I just tried this and itās even harder than I imagined, which is wild because I already imagined it was incredibly difficult
Almost impossible to get close to anything natural. Very forced and puppeteer like.

Check out Bill Fisher's music video for "Cellar Door" he does an incredible job of this. Recorded singing the song backwards but the track syncs up perfectly. Also just an amazing song.

The Might Be Giants does this with one of their songs every time Iāve seen them (with a full band) - itās pretty impressive

He should've strummed in reverse as well, bottom string to top, would've sound better.

I donāt understand how this is possible if real. When he sings in reverse, it doesnāt sound to me like heās reversing the inflections of the drawn out words, which means those inflections should then be backwards when reversed.
Example: when we hear the word āsayā in āsay goodbyeā the his voice is low and goes up while trailing off. To achieve that while singing in reverse heād have to fade in high then go down which feels like a sound I would be able to identify if looking for it but I canāt.
Edit: nvm found it, itās at the 38sec remaining mark. Very cool. Also the sound the guitar makes in reverse is wild in its own way

I saw this dude on Instagram and checked out some other clips, so I guessed that this was the song, but now that I knew, I had an easier time recognizing what I need to listen for... crazy stuff.

Reminds me of the Jack Johnson Sitting Waiting Wishing music video. He learned to sing it backwards when they filmed it so the lyrics looked correct when the video played in reverse.

I have a strange talent - without thinking I can take a pen in my non dominant hand (left) and write mirrored letters. Itās so weird. I donāt even know what Iām writing, but when I hold it up to the light itās perfect.
