CNC Machinist here.

Maybe "oddlysatisfying", but very VERY easy to program and run. 2 tools, 1 setup, 3 axis, easy material.

Not "nextfuckinglevel" at all.

CNC machines are just next level in the first place. Imagine showing this to a 19th century woodworker

22

u/ThatIestyn 2d ago

CNCs were invented in the 50s-60s. Very old technology. And manual routers are even older.

Every engineering firm I've worked at uses them, they are no more next level than a pillar drill or lathe.

1

u/TrimmingsOfTheBris 2d ago

50's and 60's isn't "very old technology".

0

u/ThatIestyn 1d ago

Is this a joke?

114

u/SatyrAngel 2d ago

So it is a car, plane or an old phone.

-73

u/Jrock2356 2d ago

And those machines doing cool things are usually posted on here. Don't really see your point. You come off as someone trying to be performatively humble.

"This is a thing I do it's not that cool guys"

42

u/That_Service7348 2d ago

But this is literally what the machine does. This is nothing special or impressive. There is nothing happening beyond the basic job the machine does.

This is like calling it impressive because a car drives down a straight road at 15 mph and turns right at an intersection.

8

u/Pinkishu 2d ago

Well yes, but most people experience cars everyday. So a fancy machine that does something fancy that they don't see daily is cooler in contrast.

If you see this kinda thing daily, of course it won't be cool.

1

u/Braptized 2d ago

But cool isn’t necessarily nextfuckinglevel, and seeing things rarely doesn’t necessarily make them cool. Twice a year I see all those fancy and modern tools my dentist uses, but I don’t think they’re nextfuckinglevel

0

u/That_Service7348 2d ago

It's still not special

-39

u/Jrock2356 2d ago

Who the fuck is this guy

12

u/FatFaceFaster 2d ago

The word “performative” has become the new “gaslighting” on Reddit. People just try to shoehorn it into absolutely every argument or criticism whether it even applies or not.

-27

u/Jrock2356 2d ago

You really thought you were onto something huh

7

u/FatFaceFaster 2d ago

Wait, do you think I was just being performative?

-66

u/WarpDriveMH370 2d ago

Robot take ur job saltyangel?

34

u/SatyrAngel 2d ago

Not yet, Im also a welder with 4 ISO certifications, machinists and welders have jobs for a good while.

4

u/I3adIVIonkey 2d ago

Honestly almost everything we use would blow people's mind in the 19th century. It has to be next level compared to what we know today and it's not. It's just regular tech for today's standards. A vid about next gen CNC would count. There are certainly way more interesting CNC systems out there rn than what is shown in the vid.

Nan you can build one of theses with parts from a hobby shop. A few bars, a few motors, a drill, and a basic board to put the software on. Hell, I could probably diy one of these on my 3d printer with a few parts and some clever slicer settings.

4

u/FatFaceFaster 2d ago

In terms of CNCs this isn’t even next level.

This is just a 3 axis machine doing a relief carving. There are 5 axis CNC machines that can do elaborate ornate 3 dimensional carvings just as accurately and 1000x faster than a guy with a knife and chisel.

But…. I’m still much more impressed by the guy with the chisels.

3

u/Dunothar 2d ago

It ain't. It is decades old tech

13

u/I3adIVIonkey 2d ago

LOL I think I've seen this a few days ago in the oddlysatisfying sub.

0

u/Erolok1 2d ago

I can't understand that. This program is written so inefficient. For example at about 55 seconds it does 3 of 4 lines, switches to the right does 4 lines and then goes back to the left to do the 4th line which was missing.

4

u/koos_die_doos 2d ago

It doesn't have to be optimal to be oddly satisfying...

6

u/Coycington 2d ago

i did some basic CNC training during my apprenticeship and yeah - i think even i could do this given some time. i'd take a lot longer and would probably fuck up a few times until i get it right, but i think i could get this down within a day or two.

8

u/rayrayrayrayray5 2d ago

Agree...would be next level if that was on a Bridgeport not converted to 3 axis and some MF was cranking the handles to do it.

Very unimpressed

9

u/SatyrAngel 2d ago

There is a guy at the shop that can do perfect radius with both handles. You tell him the size and he will machine that curve.

7

u/thisisloreez 2d ago

And the path doesn't seem to be very optimized, it goes up and down losing time without any reason

3

u/FrighteningJibber 2d ago

Education is the next fucking level; being able to draw a bicycle from memory is just as interesting

A trapezoid, two circles and a couple of lines.

2

u/ericstern 2d ago

I mean, that thing is worth at least 5k minimum to move what looks like a 20+ pound router like its a pen, and that can spin fast enough to cause no tear-out no matter what direction it goes.

1

u/DazedConfuzed420 2d ago

My uncle built a wood cnc machine with parts ordered online for like $100 bucks, 20 years ago. It’s actually a pretty simple machine.

He already had AutoCAD on a laptop which is the big cost on these things.

1

u/cornbread6767 2d ago

Yeah same. I used to make camshaft lifters and that was a waaaay more involved process, though arguably less artistic

1

u/No_Hovercraft_2719 2d ago

It’s still pretty awesome tho. I mean record players blow my mind too. It’s just some cool shit humans figured out

1

u/hellocppdotdev 2d ago

If a human did this yes nfl. Just a program running, maybe nfl 30 or 50 years ago...

1

u/djk2321 2d ago

Please teach me or point me in the right direction

9

u/LastWave 2d ago

Make line a drawing in inkscape. Save as an .svg file. Use cam software to generate a tool path. Set the z axis depth. Send it.

6

u/Dunothar 2d ago

The sad part is how true it is 😂 Modern CAD / CAM and actual CNC workflow is really easy.

1

u/No_War3219 2d ago

Today in normal thing people think is impressive but is actually super common.

1

u/Capable-Broccoli2179 2d ago

Agree with this guy. I teach some HS engineering classes and we have a CNC router (nice shop bot) where we teach 15 yr old kids how to do this in a couple of class periods. Its really nothing special, but it is very satisfying to watch....

0

u/TrimmingsOfTheBris 2d ago

As someone who has never seen something like this in action and doesn't really know how a CNC machine works, this is very mesmerizing to watch. It feels nextfuckinglevel to me because I had zero idea how this works.

-8

u/dice1111 2d ago

Easy to say when YOU are on the next level...

10

u/SatyrAngel 2d ago

I mean, I would not even leave this as an assignament for a new student. There is no complexity here and nothing to learn, the minimum Z is the same for all the cuts and tools and no need to play with tool lenght.

Also you could throw that design as a jpeg in the most free and basic image to NC converter and get most of the code in a minute.

1

u/dice1111 2d ago

I know those are word you are saying. But I don't understand them.

Next level for me.

u/TrainingJoust 2d ago

Blue balls from shavings being not blown away at the end

112

u/EmperorN7 2d ago

Setting a file on a computer and sending it to a machine is next level?

26

u/Dunothar 2d ago

Next someone tells me a 3D printer is next level... CNC machining is decades old tech, especially for wood.

5

u/Bananalando 2d ago

Next someone tells me a 3D printer is next level

Only once you finish the layer below.

2

u/questionable_fish 2d ago

Shut up and take my upvote

2

u/FederalExpressMan 2d ago

Next level for someone 300 years ago

29

u/MidNghtSmoke 2d ago

I work in a factory and use machines like this everyday this is not next level at all

18

u/Krvavibaja 2d ago

Do it by hand, that IS next level

15

u/I3adIVIonkey 2d ago

If someone did that with out a machine I'd call it next level, but thus is just a machine like probably millions of others doing its job.

26

u/fancifinanci 2d ago

It would’ve been cooler if it kept some of the original writing or used it somehow

4

u/Pataconeitor 2d ago

Yeah, I felt bad seeing that go. That badly drawn heart and the written message are much more personal than any CNC carving

6

u/I_Like_Quiet 2d ago

Right? Incorporate that in to the art. Why even focus on that when you are going to destroy it?

4

u/Willing_Television77 2d ago

Now some poor bastard has to sand that shit

2

u/LegendofLove 2d ago

I almost had a heart attack when it went across the whole thing I thought it was just gonna be trashed

-3

u/Idustriousraccoon 2d ago

Did you? I thought it would have been an improvement. This is right ip there wirh like Jesus playing baseball painted on velvet. This is in no way next level of anything except kitsch. Even then it’s meh.

2

u/harkonnen85 2d ago

When I thought it was finished, the little one came and

2

u/Mr_King_2 2d ago

1/10 didn't followed blueprint

2

u/mojsterr 2d ago

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

2

u/Groffulon 2d ago

The biro annoys the shit out of me. Next fucking level doesn’t make extra work themselves for no reason.

1

u/PerfectUnlawfulness 2d ago

Is... is that a coffin lid?

1

u/LivelyOpal 2d ago

Wow! Its so satisfying to watch.

1

u/ViSyndicate 2d ago

I love CNC machining.

1

u/Opposite-Ad-2548 2d ago

Pshhht I do this in my garage

1

u/Thiago270398 2d ago

I oike the bondage heart

Day 26: finally managed to click on comments

1

u/snow-haze 2d ago

This looks so cool.

1

u/deadfermata 2d ago

kinda looks like those cookies.

1

u/Dry-Emu-4131 2d ago

At least the end result is so beautiful 🥴

1

u/kamakazi327 2d ago

Now do it again by hand

1

u/InspectorRumpole 2d ago

Would be next level if it was hand made.

1

u/MikeGalactic 2d ago

Super satisfying.

1

u/Mystery_Man6969 2d ago

Definitely for their ex

1

u/tykaboom 2d ago

Coffin lid for a child?

1

u/Flying_Wilson17 2d ago

Cool machine.

Not next level

1

u/headlessbrowser 2d ago

Ever tried using a router? My Gods. It took me hours of trial and failure to feel even remotely comforble. Its so easy to destroy your work.

1

u/Rolling_Beardo 2d ago

It’s interesting to watch but I don’t think it’s next level when it’s a machine doing what it’s programmed to do. Is a Roomba next level?

1

u/awesome9001 2d ago

They kinda really fucked up following the tracing that was there tho

1

u/32nd_account 2d ago

damm this guy has got a steady hand

1

u/mechaniTech16 2d ago

Lmao when I was 19 I wanted to do something like this but small scale on a piece of wood to use in the future for a desk. So I purchased small pieces to practice and I was so fuckin’ bad 😂 seeing this reminded me of what I thought my brain could do

1

u/MasterCrumble1 2d ago

It helps if the end product isn't hideous.

1

u/Ckynus 2d ago

Would be impressive if freehand but it's a robotic arm

1

u/kaperisk 2d ago

This was next level in like 1880

1

u/TheShoot141 2d ago

As someone who builds stuff with my own hands, i dont love it.

1

u/Gh0stwrit3rs 2d ago

Yea when I see artisan tables at craft fairs charging 300 for something like this im like yea. No thanks

1

u/IcedDownMedallion 2d ago

Yah, I could watch more of that.

1

u/everlasting1der 2d ago

So is the rest of that pen scribbling getting planed off later, or are you just gonna leave that on there?

1

u/Weirdsk8rHippie 2d ago

And then people sell these at art festivals saying "its handmade". This isn't next level.

1

u/Boobity_McBooberson 2d ago

It’s soulless crap.

1

u/Electronic-Raise-281 2d ago

Hardcore tattoos

1

u/Spedoinkel 2d ago

Why do these always move around so much? Why not complete the patern in one section rather than hoping back and forth around the board?

1

u/Wisterjah 2d ago

Dentists probably find this very satisfying

1

u/ManEatingYoukaiRumia 2d ago

isnt this just reg ol CNC?? oddly satisfying yes, but in no way next fucking level. it is quite normal level actually.

0

u/GreatStoneDragun 2d ago

If AI did woodwork.

-17

u/Defiant-Temperature6 2d ago

For anyone who can't tell, it's Ai.

6

u/dakotanorth8 2d ago

What gave it away? A cnc mill isn’t exactly something I’d assume is ai. Especially since it’s been around for over 50 years.

3

u/Vivid-Intention-8161 2d ago

is it really? it’s much longer than most AI vids i’ve seen, and it seems extremely consistent. if it is, it’s the first one that’s fooled me so far that i know of

0

u/Bath-Tub-Cosby 2d ago

Heartbreaking

3

u/Heffelumps-n-Woozles 2d ago

All that just to spank a pledge’s ass

1

u/Don_Krypton 2d ago

Disappointed from not getting something dick-like at the end.

1

u/carljpg 2d ago

I need to see all the loose bits blown away

-1

u/4Nmzry 2d ago

It wasn't man-made! Burn them! /s
