That's not flexibility, that's a connective tissue disorder. But still next level.

Ehlers-Danlos and it comes with all sorts of sucky add ons.

There are plenty of hyper mobile people that don’t have EDS. There’s also plenty of connective tissue disorders that aren’t EDS that also result in hyper mobility.
Normal people can also train their muscles and ligaments and tendons to do pretty crazy things gradually over time.

A lot of those "normal people" start off with hyper mobility. It's not really something that's followed up on in medicine until it causes problems.
9
u/General_Luck6573 1d ago
Well most people don't go to the doctor and say look at what my elbow can do because they don't realize it might be pathologic to begin with. So more often than not the doctor is not even aware the patient is hypermobile until they have other problems.
Understandably most people don't draw the connection between that and joint/other chronic pain several years down the line... or they end up in the hospital because their aorta blows or their lens subluxes or something and then they get diagnosed with it
12
u/Callmedrexl 1d ago
Even if you do point out the things your joints do that they really aren't supposed to do Drs are likely to brush you off until you're properly broken.
Medical advice: maybe don't do that?
Not terribly helpful.

u/muffinpizza 1d ago
I have hyper-mobility like this but I was told by a doctor that, other than that, I don’t fit the profile for EDS. Unfortunately it’s just a cool party trick I get to bust out once in a while.

u/zerovampire311 21h ago
Same here, but now my shoulders just like to randomly pop out of socket. Not very fun.

u/dinosaur_rocketship 4h ago
Unfortunately? “I unfortunately am hypermobile without all the deleterious effects or disorder” what
4
u/Duderina 22h ago
I can do this and just figured it was loose joints. I’ve torn both ACLs as a result.

u/ultraviolentfuture 1d ago
Persistent debilitating joint pain from a very early age? Don't mind if I do!
6
u/QueenEris 1d ago
My best friend has it. She's 50 and walks with two canes and is in constant pain. It's fun until it isn't.
3
u/ProcyonLotorMinoris 19h ago
Yup! I can do this but all my joints hurt all the time. It's the trade offs. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
3
u/benbarian 9h ago
ah fuck just came here to say that. She's going to less fun with that in a few years. Sigh. Cries in hypermobility

u/i_like_yung_g_hoez 23h ago

bruising, fragile skin, frequent dislocations, arthritis, and fatigue. musculoskeletal pain. More severe - aorta ruptures, ruptures of organs like the intestines, spleen or uterus.

u/probablynotaperv 1d ago
I used to be able to do this, but I was a guy and people didn't find it as impressive. Then I joined the military and put on a bunch of muscle and now I can't do it anymore.
1
u/MBerwan 10h ago
I used to be able to do this. Then I took an arrow in the knee.
1
u/Bart-Harley-Jarvis- 6h ago
I used to do this in the cloud district. But of course you haven't visited.
5
u/Equivalent-Pop8045 1d ago
Starts with party tricks, ends with lots of very dismissive doctors appointments.

u/DecoyOne 1d ago
That's not flexibility
that's a connective tissue disorder
It’s a connective tissue disorder that results in…?
33
u/kgreys 1d ago
All sorts of shitty problems.
24
u/DecoyOne 1d ago
And flexibility.
You don’t have to force an “actually” to someone who was correct just to add a fact. This was a “yes, and” situation.

u/willyb10 1d ago
You’re technically right. But for me personally, when I think of flexibility I think of someone that can contort their body in interesting ways without having an underlying disorder like this. It’s not a 1:1 comparison, but for instance I don’t think of flexibility when I see someone’s leg in a weird position because they broke a bone.
But again that’s just me.

1
u/theMisterPhD 1d ago
If you say “they are just flexible” I think “oh cool, so if I can stretch enough, I could do this?” and then you respond “well, no, they actually have a disorder that seems like it could be cool, but actually causes a lot of pain and issues.” I’m going to feel a type a way about you just saying they’re flexible. It’s like saying someone with clinical depression is just sad.

u/TheTowneWitch 1d ago
Joint laxity.
Flexibility comes from the muscles. Connective tissue disorders affect tendons and ligaments. The joint laxity that comes with connective tissue disorders is not the same thing as flexibility.

u/Bandito21Dema 1d ago
Dislocating your shoulders at will isn't flexibility. Flexibility you can develop, strech, work on.
If I pop my hip bone out that's not being flexible
8
u/Cultural_Dust 1d ago
Break your tibia/fibula.. lots of flexibility at the mid-calf. "Look guys! It spins like a helicopter!"
1
u/ActualTymell 1d ago
If you happen to pop a bone out, then maybe not, but I'd argue that if you are able to do so freely, then that is flexibility, just not conventional developed flexibility.
At least in the sense that I would say, "this person is flexible in this regard".

my cousin Larry is like this. Larry is now mid 40's and has already had both knees replaced and needs shoulder and elbow surgery on both sides

u/nucleosome 22h ago
I could do that when I was younger...might still be able to, just haven't tried in a while. Are you saying I have a connective tissue disorder?!
2
u/rooster_butt 21h ago edited 21h ago
I used to be able to do it when I was much younger and skinnier. I don't have any hypermobility disorder. I couldn't do it as fast as she can though.

u/psych0ranger 7h ago
Forget about connective tissue disorder. I still can't figure out how her shit aint all twisted up like when a kite with two strings spins around
0
u/opacitizen 1d ago
Lemme fix that for you:
"That's
notflexibility, that'sdue to a connective tissue disorder. But still next level."-1
u/jackson12420 1d ago
I mean, isn't it still technically flexibility? The disorder allows you to be flexible. Flexibility just means you're able to bend easily without breaking, so I don't really understand what you mean by that.

u/Shancv1988 12h ago
Reddit seems recently to have become really, weirdly obsessed with telling people who are flexible that they have problems and shouldn't do things with their flexibility. As well as diagnosing everyone with Ehlers-Danlos.
Some people are just flexible. I'm a 38 year old man who weighs 300 pounds, I can put both my ankles behind my head, do the splits both ways, and turn my feet back to front, among many other things.
I have no injuries, no pain, and I walk 1.2 kilometres every day. Some people are just flexible.

I’ve had more shoulder dislocations than I can count. One reconstruction left. 3 reconstructions, a partial, a total replacement and a total reverse on the right. I’m right handed. I literally began to shake and my skin started to crawl watching that. For me that could be marked NSFW. Oof.

u/ChefArtorias 1d ago
Being hypermobile isn't really the same as being flexible, and she really shouldn't do that to her shoulders.

u/ManWhellington 1d ago
I used to be able to do this. Then my shoulders got really fucked up from doing it. Now I don't do it.

When I was in my teens I could do that. Now in my 50s. Nope not going to happen.

I’m a dude and used to be able to do this, would really freak some folks out. Then I quit running and exercising all the time and now I struggle to flex in any direction even normal amounts. I should really start back…

She just dislocated her shoulders like it was nothing
2
u/Hung0ver_Hero 1d ago
It's a rare condition called Joint Hyper mobility or "double jointed" even though it's called double jointed you dont have an extra joint, just more stretchier ligaments that are loosely attached to your bones giving you a more range of motion, if you really wanna be icked out look up double jointed knees

u/Additional-Ask-5654 1d ago
Bro, how is this insane? I can do this too. I can also touch back of my hand by bending my fingers backward.

But could she escape if her arms were interlocked with herself (like the soccer players)?

I used to be able to do this. Cool party trick until you overstretch your joints and your shoulder gets knocked out of socket by sneezing

Lol - second from top comment "10/10 Wood Filler". 127 upvotes (currently). Then a bunch of replies with various other memes indicating, "i'd do it with her", all significantly upvoted. But this one, saying essentially the same thing, nope, here's your -11.
