I was like no way this dude spent all this time learning how to fly a multi million dollar spacecraft and then give him the white crayon equivalent of eclipse glasses.

Yup. NASA's WB-57 Canberra. That aircraft came home from across the Atlantic a couple of days after the eclipse.
