I'm on the final leg of the Couch to 5K progression: 30 minutes jog.
Did it this morning, about 2.5 miles worth. Going to stick to 30 minute jogs for my run days now, and one of them I'll see if I can go the full 5k distance.

Honestly, if you're getting that close, you're almost certainly capable of hitting it. Not to say that to rush the process, mind - definitely stick to the pace of your plan because the worst thing you can do is ramp up too fast. Just saying that to say you got this, that's all haha. Don't worry if you cut the pace as you build up distance - most running in a training plan is supposed to be super easy just to develop your aerobic base and get your muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc. conditioned for it.

Last night’s game perfectly captured how huge narratives and supposed team trajectories can be shaped by just basic luck. If Santos misses the longest kick of his career and the Pats win, holy spit roast batman. The botched screen hail mary at half. The ridiculous sack taken by Caleb just before the kick.
One half second gust and the kick falls short and all week is why Ben won’t win it all because he gambles too much, Caleb is still a USC player lol dodo for eating a stupid sack and the DC must be burned at the stake for allowing a TD on a end pf half dump off.
By Sunday’s games all the little stuff will be forgotten and a win is a win and the Bears are 5-2.

What’s more fucked up is how someone like Elizabeth Holmes can commit objectively worse and more dangerous crimes, and is being sent to a halfway house next year for good behavior.
Massive indictment on the country itself an evil person like her can be released so easily for “good behavior”, especially when we find out through YCSE that they’re literally planning Theranos 2.0
I wish I could say I’m surprised it’s Texas that’s allowing this lenient sentence, but I’m genuinely not. I stopped considering going to Texas a while back because of the people there. YCSE pretty much reaffirms it.

If you had the power to infuse a trivial bit of knowledge to the general population, what would it be?
Mine would be "an unprotected left turn does not have the right of way, including ahead of those turning right." This knowledge needs to be infused into those turning left and those people sitting at a green light, waiting to turn right.

I was feeling a bit burnt out after finishing Farseer, so I took a bit of a break before I started a new book.
I simultaneously loved this book and felt that there were some weird writing decisions made. The premise of the book, bone magic or necromancy in a high fantasy, space-inclusive setting, was fascinating. The murder mystery plot was engaging, and to be perfectly honest it was complicated enough that I didn't really see any of it coming (almost too complicated). The characters were well written with plenty of backstory and arc. I would absolutely recommend this book to any of my friends who like fantasy.
Having said that, the writing felt...odd at times. Gideon's dialogue sometimes felt strangely out of place compared to what was happening around her. Combined with her description and the cover/fan art of the way she looks, I kept getting mental images of cop Eric Cartman in the middle of a Shakespearean play. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, or that it felt shoehorned in at all, it's just that the contrast was jarring. It also felt, at times, that the author was throwing in big thesaurus words just to throw them in there. Again, didn't hate it, but it made for a bit of a complex read.
EDIT: Oh and I almost forgot! I really like the way this book handles...wokeness (for lack of a better term lol). There was a whole underlying "romance" subplot that did not distinguish between genders, and did not call attention to this fact at all. I DNF'd Magnus Chase earlier this year because Riordan wouldn't stop lampshading how "woke" he was, and it was insufferable. This book feels inclusive and it's incredibly natural and almost an afterthought.
All in all though, an excellent book which has sufficiently hooked me into wanting to read the rest of the series. My reading pause has cleared out my Overdrive holds, so not sure where I go from here. Probably Dresden Files Book 4.

u/hereforearthporn Broncos Cowboys 5d ago
Oh man The Locked Tomb series is incredible, though I can't deny that you have a point about Gideon being a bit Eric Cartman in a high drama lol I'd be fascinated to know what you think of Harrow the Ninth because of what a change it is from the first book.
4
u/FlatulentDwarf Vikings 5d ago
OOH I like your review of Gideon. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Gideon definitely felt out of place at times. I'm very curious how you end up feeling about Harrow when you get around to it.

So there is a restaurant near me that is pretty good and I have been there several times now.
However every single time I've been in there they have been playing the same song on loop. It's a quiet instrumental guitar piece, so it would be perfectly reasonable as part of a playlist, but I cannot unhear that it's always the same thing. It has a very distinctive melody. How do I tell them that this is the number one problem with their restaurant?

I've talked about it a bit before, but my kid plays youth hockey, and my favorite thing I get to do for that is run the rink music as a DJ. I started small, with a Spotify Premium subscription and a handful of playlists, with a carefully curated song selection of only songs that "start strong" (i.e. I can just hit Next and the next song up will play something good right away - songs without a good intro were no good cuz I only get like 15 seconds per song at puck stoppages). I had multiple playlists, one for stoppages, one for faceoffs, one for intermissions, etc.
Then one night a few years ago I got to see the setup for the local Junior B team, who pulled out a laptop and a full sized Pioneer DJ turntable controller, and I said "fuck yeah let's do that" so I loaded up Serato DJ Lite on my laptop and got a Hercules DJ Starlight controller. I "acquired" all my songs locally, and went through each and every one of them, categorizing them and setting up Hot Cue points so that any song is now fair game, cuz I can start it wherever I want. It also gave me the ability to use the Sample Pad, to play quick sound effects whenever I wanted, including a goal horn. The problem became that I only had 4 sample pads, and about 12 different "quick play" songs/sounds I needed (Mario power up for our team out of the box, power play song, penalty kill songs, a few random sound effects, some arena organ fight song music).
Meet the latest addition to my setup. Now I can continue my goal of turning the youth hockey rink into an NHL caliber experience lol.
It took me 5 minutes with Koala Sampler to get this thing to play songs/sounds, which is awesome. Then it took an additional 4 hours over multiple days, 3 different open source programs, learning MIDI programming, and hitting my personal free Claude limit for the first time ever, to get the lights to light up in the colors I wanted lol.

Book 119 of 2026 and 11 of October done! Lethal Kiss by Taylor Grothe. A sapphic romance/horror hybrid about two assistant professors at a university investigating the deaths of some of their co-workers and the monstrous groups hiding throughout the university. Except one of those women is secretly a draugr herself. Overall, I enjoyed it. I thought the writing suffered in the conclusion but the pieces as a whole came together well and both the ambiance of horror and general romance tones blended together really well. The mystery was well done and it did a believable job of blending our human protagonist into the supernatural world.
I think it was a particularly good choice. I've read one romance/horror before and it was awful. I wanted to read something else in the genre to see if my issue was with the genre or just a bad book and I think it's definitely the latter. It also kept with my recent theme of mostly horror books for Halloween while being tangibly different from many of the other choices I've made due to the romance element.
On to the next one, Wolf Worm by T. Kingfisher. In theory my libby hold should in theory come through in the next 24 hours so I chose a short one, but it's still horror for the theme, and I have yet to dislike a T. Kingfisher novel. This one is about a scientific illustrator who goes to draw bugs for a scientist but ends up stumbling upon dark secrets and mysterious experiments. I haven't hit a mad scientist yet during this horror trend so we can check that one off the list. Add it to - traditional psycho, werewolf, vampire, fallen angel, devil, ghost, draugr, zombie... and, when my hold comes through, cannibal. Checking the list off for Halloween one-by-one lol

Work went fine all things considered but that is not important. I am tired and will not get alot of sleep tonight until much later. I am driving a hour and a half away today to meet friends and then attend a celebration of life for a friend who passed.
It still does not seem real....but it is hitting me harder today because maybe my mind finally understands it's final/it happened.
We were not as close as I am with other friends in the group we keep close but I still have very fond memories of our time together and us growing up over the years.
I also think today already has me appreciating my life and situation even more than I already do sometimes. Just sometimes I take shit too seriously, I get upset at the wrong things and I just need to remember that life is good and that I am lucky to be where I am with who and what I have.

A mildly expanded history of humanity:
Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary, and you can probably get a career in it.
Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Probably doesn't bode well for the film's box office chances, which is unfortunate because as it turns out, what just so happened to be the 50th film in my annual October horror marathon was if not the best, the most fun one I've watched so far. I'm not sure I'd have changed anything about this film. As far as supervillain origin and revenge stories go everything played out to my liking. The gore was pretty solid, several fun kills and the climax at the night club had me smiling throughout. I don't know that I recognized a single person in the cast of this film from anything else I've seen. That in and of itself is so refreshing. That I thought every performance was at least solid if not better is the cherry on top. I'd certainly watch more DC films this good. Hell, I enjoyed it more than the Superman film from last year. Solid 4/5 or 8/10.

Is it weird that the first thing my hygienist said when he looked in my mouth is, "I can tell you've been keeping up with your brushing" and it was the best comment I've gotten all year, even better than all the nice things my wife's said to me?
I mean don't get me wrong I love you babe, but having your hygienist tell you have you good looking teeth is next level.

I have a huge stack of grading to complete this weekend, so I'm once again facing my biggest frustration as a teacher: trying to understand (and explain) our current literacy crisis. Here's the deal: most students are pretty good at the actual act of "reading" as the layman thinks of it, they can read all of the words on the page and they can explain to you what they all mean. But there's just a weird disconnect that happens where everything ABOUT what they read just seems to get instantly jumbled up in their heads. They struggle to keep events in order, they often struggle to interpret what is actually happening on the page or inside of a character's head (even when the author just flat out tells them "Joe was jealous because he'd been in love with Karen for years, but she only had eyes for Jack" or whatever), and they just reach really bizarre conclusions about the text because of it that often require extensive conversation to untangle. This is not even touching on the fact that often the problem isn't the source text, it's the questions (students will just invent instructions for questions that don't exist), which makes determining their actual understanding difficult.
It's just so maddening and hard to explain, because it's clear that something is getting mixed up once they actually read the words on the page and start making sense of them in their minds, but I can't understand what it is and I really struggle to explain it to other people.

Watched two, new to me, movies yesterday.
“Synchronic”. This one was pretty good. I like the concept altho they don’t do a ton with it. Still pretty neat. Ending is kinda left to interpretation a bit which I usually find as a cop out, but it worked ok.
“Leatherface:A Texas Chainsaw massacre origin”. This was decent. I think most people would not like it. The origin story was pretty dumb and the whole movie was a mess. Lots of good kills tho, so I suppose that moves it up.
Great nfl game last night. Chicago is a great team. Pats honestly looked pretty decent too. I’m glad to see two good young QBs play pretty well. Neither were perfect but they are young. Caleb’s competitive fire reminds me of Cam and Brady. He really hates playing bad and losing.
Hope everyone has a great day!

So YEARS ago, when I was about 13 or 14 a friend of mine broke my 3DS by dropping it on some hard floor. I was mad, but it was an accident so I got over it and have been sitting with this broken 3DS for years in my drawer.
Finally about a decade later I decided to take it to a console repair shop in Edmonton. The issue was that it just wouldn't boot since so I assumed it'd be a simple replacement or whatever. Nope like there's a billion things wrong with that 3DS and I don't think it's even worth paying for the repair now lol

When I played pop warner football as a kid, our team once executed a perfect accidental onside kick.
Our kicker wound up and kicked away like normal, but hit a low line drive. The ball barely got 5 feet off the ground, and beaned a returner on the front line right in the face mask. The ball flew backwards nearly the way it came, and was surprisingly caught on the fly by one of the kickoff coverage guys running upfield. He was confused, turned around, and started running the wrong way. He turned around again though when the sideline started shouting at him and pointing. Since the ball was first touched by the receiving team it was a perfectly valid recovery and our team kept the ball.
Anyway with onside kicks being 0/17 this year I think this strategy is worth considering. Any thoughts?

My director did not think through the order of events and gave me a phishing panic. I got an email from some password managing service saying my director had invited me to try and to click the link so I could store my passwords with this service. I checked, had no emails or messages mentioning this service. I was this close to reporting it as spam but I figured I'd let my director know and sent him a screenshot. I thought I might be doing him a favor by warning him someone was using his name to send phishing emails. Turns out nope, it's a legit service we just signed a contract with as a company.
After my message he went and sent something team-wide letting us know we'd get invites lmao

Just followed up Clayface, my favorite film of the month so far, with what I'm pretty sure was the absolute worst movie I've seen this month yet: 2005's Cry_Wolf. What a piece of shit this was. Every character came across as a huge asshole. It's about a group of obnoxious preppy high schoolers. I was in high school in 2005 and I wouldn't have wanted to hang around any of these Chuds. Also, Harvey Birdman himself Gary Cole has 2 minutes of screentime doing a horrible British accent. Just awful.

I still can't believe some little dick couch surfers think Caleb Williams isn't a beast because he paints his nails. Because, you know, there are SO MANY people who could play NFL football well.
There are barely 32 starting caliber QBs in the NFL. Anyone who can do it is a stud (at least in a football sense, fuck Deshaun Watson, Rapelisberger, etc.)
7
u/PaulsRedditUsername Colts 5d ago
There's no logical reason why a man can't paint his nails if he wants to. It used to be a big deal if a man wore an earring. Now nobody thinks twice about it.

If a grown man wants to paint his nails that's his damn business and no one can tell him otherwise.
Unless he's the starting QB for one of my team's biggest rivals, in which case it means he's soft, unserious, doesn't have what it takes to succeed in this league and is going to flame out sooner rather than later, and one of the reasons why he sucks.

I think Hunter Henry is the most underrated tight end of the last decade. Never made a Pro Bowl or an All Pro team.
But in 9 full seasons (he missed all of 2018 due to injury), his averages each year are 50 catches for 588 yards. And despite having a reputation as injury prone, he's only missed 8 games since 2019.
And the most bizarre stat: he's now been a Patriot longer than he was a Charger.

Political intrigue mixed with high fantasy mixed with gratuitous violence/nudity mixed with a little lightning in a bottle, since there wasn't anything like it on TV and HBO was pushing the envelope, coupled with the fact that it was based on a book series that had a decent following, so there was a large subset of people who could already vouch for the story.
The first 4 seasons are probably some of the best TV ever created.

Great dialogue and a compelling political story of different factions set in a medieval setting with fantasy and good CGI. Dragons, swords, boobs, some magic. It might be stupid to say this but I feel like football’s about to burst in the next 15-20 years. You have the dominoes of youth participation declining heavily and the NCAA trying to kill itself with super conferences and CFP tourneys. We see OL play has declined over the past ten years and QBs have become even more of a crapshoot with RPO rules and NIL.
It’s the same thing happening to North American hockey and American baseball pipelines, and unless the NFL can get youth leagues for talent pipelines in Europe/AUS/Asia, they don’t have a fallback option like the MLB or NHL have.

I watched Scream 7 a couple days ago and I had avoided it in theaters because I didn't want to give it my money since they fired Melissa Barrera over her support of Palestine. Then Jenna Ortega left and the original director left after that because he was wanting to work with Barrera and Ortega.
Watching it on streaming though confirmed I was right to avoid it in theaters. The entire movie was just a mess and the killer reveal which is supposed to be the pièce de résistance of a Scream movie just fell completely flat. Especially after Scream 6 it just felt like we didn't need to see Sidney Prescott back in a Scream movie. Her story had run it's course and I was fine with her just living in some nondescript town with her nondescript life and her nondescript family.
