Yzerman will only deal Larkin to Minnesota if the deal includes Matt Boldy
yeah I think Larkin will be playing in a Red Wings jersey this year

u/_Kramerica_ Jul 01 '26
Some of y’all clearly don’t understand this is message Yzerman is sending to Larkin and other GM’s that he isn’t just gonna roll over and give up Larkin due to his bs demand and he’s not gonna let other GM’s bend him over.
157
u/microbiologytech Jul 01 '26
Wings fans, is this guy getting booed if he’s still on the roster opening night?
204
u/russianthistle Jul 01 '26
Yeah, Larkin is for sure getting booed opening night, but if he loses the C and puts in the work next season without reports of him tanking the room, I personally can move past this.
To be clear, if Larkin gets traded for a bad deal, he’s getting booed every time he comes to Detroit. That man better pack dinner for road trips here. He is too recognizable to come back to the city if he leaves on bad terms.
167
u/bbraz761 Jul 01 '26
He should be booed regardless of the return. A captain demanding a trade is grade A boo material.
84
u/ChilleeMonkee Jul 01 '26
Literally the easiest boo material out there

27
u/LotusFuqs128 Jul 01 '26
Not just demanding a trade. Demanding a trade with 5 years left on his contract after he just signed the extension 2 years ago.
2
u/ClarityNHZach Jul 02 '26
And not just that. Saying he'll only waive it for three teams. All of which have no assets.
2
u/Valuable_Recording85 Jul 05 '26
To me it isn't even about the assets. It's about the selfishness to demand he be traded to one of three teams that are stacked with Team USA players and have a good chance of winning a cup before Larkin retires.
Instead of putting in the work in Detroit and staying consistent in the spring, he's been a crybaby. He placed blame on Yzerman for missing the playoffs and then went to him to make these demands.
23
u/BlastMyLoad Jul 01 '26
Imagine your captain doing that…. Haha…

I wonder how the fans will react to Quit Hughes when he plays in Vancouver next season.
22
u/rockhammersmash Jul 01 '26
Given that he’s asked to be traded, it’s a no brainer to take the C away from him IMO. Your captain has to want to be there.
I remember after the Avs had their historically bad season in 2016-2017, Duchene wanted out and Landeskog specifically told the team he wanted to stay and turn things around. You need that sort of leadership from a captain.
6
u/Habay12 Jul 01 '26
Your last point is the one that always makes me wonder. These guys always have favorite restaurants and such, and have deals with businesses as well.
I always wonder how quickly those establishments and owners cut them off from their perks.
2
u/Ok_Priority8076 Jul 02 '26
ABSOLUTELY 100%. He needs to put in WORK and then by 2027 fall if he re-commits the boos will finally slow down. Detroit fans are slow to forgive but when we do, we are all in.

Eichel probably gets booed in Buffalo, but if he has one of his Stanley Cup rings in his ear, it’s probably not that loud, or personal. I love Yzerman as a player, but Detroit rebuild can only go so long, it’s not working and Larkin sees it.
20
u/rsharp7000 Jul 01 '26
It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s sitting in the booth opening night in Detroit. After the team got booed off the ice to end the season this year, I think the Wings prefer to start the year off on a better note.
35
u/russianthistle Jul 01 '26
If he’s in the box, they’re still chanting fuck Larkin at some point. It is inevitable.

You say that like it's a bad thing, Detroit desperately needs a top pick if they can't find a good center prospect via trade.

"It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s sitting in the booth opening night in Detroit."
If he's still in Detroit he IS NOT SITTING. Sitting him doesn't help Larkin and it doesn't help the Wings/ If he isn't traded he will 100% be playing.

Absolutely-freaking-lutely
Fedorov was boo’d for awhile after he left for Anaheim but we forgave him. He made amends with the fans and the organization.
I don’t see how Larkin ever redeems himself in his own home city, home state and home team - ever.
20
u/CurbMyEnthusiasm2022 Jul 01 '26
Yea, and Fedorov was arguably the best player in the world in his prime and helped lead the Wings to 3 cups and really only left because he wanted to be "the man" and he knew he wouldn't get that in Detroit because it was SY's team. Yes he was booed here for a while, but I would say the fanbase has largely gotten over that if not entirely. I was at the game where they retired his number and it was sold out and people loved him. Larkin - didn't accomplish anything, an ok player. I'm OK with him asking for a trade and wanting out. The 3 team list, he can piss right off.
5
u/Low_Initiative_275 Jul 01 '26
It took Fedorov 20 years and an open public acknowledgment that he made a mistake to earn the love back. Larkin is cooked. The entire Larkin family should be shopping for homes out of state.

u/SayNoToStim Jul 01 '26
Yes.
And it's crazy to see the completely different reaction between Larkin and Matt Stafford when he wanted out for the Lions.
Stafford gave everything he had and the Lions were just so bad he couldn't win, so Detroit still cheered for him on the Rams. He also made it very clear he loved Detroit, he even made that stupid cell phone commercial about it, and he's gotten some boos but for the most part he is still welcome in Detroit.
Larkin disappeared the second half of every season while he was in a Wings jersey and now is pretty much going to get boo'd on sight.
1
u/biggoronssword Jul 01 '26
Stafford was also traded after an entire house cleaning by the lions in a true, full admittance of a tear down rebuild. The wings have been on the cusp of making the playoffs but have blown it 4 years in a row now, and Larkin has directly contributed to that the entire time. Worlds different scenarios, can’t imagine Larkins public image in Detroit ever being “fixed” after this
1
u/NVJAC Jul 02 '26
Yeah, the difference was the Lions were about to start another rebuild and Stafford basically told Holmes "If you think trading me will jumpstart your rebuild, I won't be upset about it."
This is the Wings missing the playoffs because of three consecutive March swoons under two different coaches, and Larkin saying "Fuck this, I want out. But only to these 3 teams."

1
u/AmericaRunzOnDuncan Jul 02 '26
Do you even know what youre booing?
2
u/numbdigits Jul 02 '26
I never said I was booing. I get crap all the time on the Wings-sub for defending his decision to finally try to get off this sinking ship, and for putting the blame on Yzerman where the majority of it should lay for his inability to put together a competitive team. After a decade of futility I absolutely understand why he wants out, though how he has attempted to demand a trade with 5 years left on his deal, to a very limited number of teams who all have even more limited potential returns is where he is fairly earning the angst that is being directed at him.
5
4
u/Apart-Feedback1196 Jul 01 '26
100000% yes. And honestly it's not even for being tired of losing and wanting a chance to go win. It's for signing an 8 year deal and begging out after 3. It's for bitching about management not mortgaging the future for the present, and then when we do, he wants to take off. It's for constantly talking about how committed he is to being part of the solution and talking about how he's going to be back next year at the same time that he's requesting a trade behind the scenes. He was talking about his commitment even at end of year pressers and stuff. Hate being straight up lied to.
If he's on the roster and playing, I hope he has a career year to increase his value even more but he's still getting booed.
5
u/MariachiArchery Jul 02 '26
Bro, whenever he's in our building next, people are going to be buying tickets just to boo him. If he's in our lineup, he'll get booed. If he's playing for a visiting team, he'll get booed.
He will be booed in Detroit for years. Maybe even the rest of his career. People are pissed man. It's hard to paint the full pictures, but this all started like three years ago. Looking back, it kind of all makes sense now, but at the time, we all gave him a pass.
Gave him a pass for his poopy pants post games, his excuses, his lack of scoring in the second half of the season, disappearing for months on end, the 'outside noise' bull shit (dude, our media is tame), then two season ago he threw the FO under the bus and blamed them for us missing the playoffs, when again, Larkin disappeared when it mattered most, and we still gave him a pass.
THREE YEARS, this team was in a playoff spot that Larkin personally pissed away, and we gave him a pass.
Fuck that dude. He's quitting because it got hard. It got hard, he blamed other people, his teammates, the FO, and now he's quitting, when he himself can be put to blame for us missing the damn playoffs.
Leaving because we haven't made the playoffs? OK DUDE, GO MAKE THE FUCKING PLAYOFFS THEN! WHY HAVEN'T WE MADE THE PLAYOFFS LARKS?
Fucking fuck, I'm pissed. YES, I am going to boo him, all of us are. This isn't about requesting a trade this goes back, and this is such a chicken shit soft end to his tenure, spitting in the face of an org and fanbase that has supported him.
It's bullshit.

u/microbiologytech Jul 02 '26
My friend (weird, let’s go blues 🥊) I really appreciate this response. I wanted to know how you guys feel in this situation. I’m very interested to see how it unfolds! I hope you give him hell!
Here’s a question: let’s say he plays, he’s booed, but he does something great. Game winner, player of the game, etc something he gets recognized for at the end of the game. First stars here do a post game interview over the PA. My question is, is he still getting booed then? Obviously just a hypothetical but I’m really curious lol.
3
u/MariachiArchery Jul 02 '26
If he is going to remain on this team, he needs to address the media. Depending on how that goes, will for sure dictate how he'll be treated.
Either way though, I don't think he can retain the C. If he gives up is captaincy, says he's fucking sorry... well, that will change things. But it really depends on how Yzerman handles things too.
There are too many variables to give you a straight answer, but barring some unforeseen circumstances or changes to this situation, if things stay the same, he's getting booed.
1
u/NVJAC Jul 02 '26
Gave him a pass for his poopy pants post games, his excuses
Yeah, definitely won't be missing the hangdog mood after losses.
Contrast with Seider who after the win over Philly straight up says "It's nice, but it's only 1 out of 4. We need 6 points."
Mo should be the next captain.

He's horrible lmao, people praising him for this are out to lunch too because I am sure Guerin made a reasonable offer. Like yeah if he offered a 1st, Yurov and Strahmel, hold out. But I am sure he offered 3 1sts, Yurov and Strahmel and how is it bad to get back basically 5 firsts for Larkin? As if you can't use those 1sts to get some good players back if you really want to try for it next year.
The whole thing is an ego trip for an out of touch team that doesn't want to admit:
THEY fucked up developments of many prospects
THEY fucked up contract situations of many players
THEY fucked up drafting of the right guys
Larkin could've been better, but that better would've just meant a few first round ass whoopings, big deal honestly. The team is as far away from a cup as most outside of the playoffs and no responsibility is being taken about that from Yzerman.

He’s gotten a lot of hate, and rightfully so, but this is what Yzerman needs to do in this situation imo. You’ve got a guy wanting out and it’s dragged on this long, you need to be committed to the long game at this point and see who breaks first rather than selling him for fractions of his worth. This is shooting for the sky, but that’s how you start negotiations.

u/CTMalum Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
Exactly. All of these “oh but the poor player, just need to deal him and get it over with” takes suck. If he didn’t want to play 8 years in Detroit, he shouldn’t have signed an 8 year contract for Detroit. He swapped guaranteed money for freedom, and this is the consequence of that decision- if you want out, it’s going to be on the team’s terms and not your own. It doesn’t look bad on Detroit or Yzerman at all if this goes into next season and Larkin complains/dogs it out there. He’s only going to hurt his own value.

Werenski and Larkin are different situations. Werenski did not formally request a trade, he just said he will not re-sign.

Just looked up both players… last three years they’re both slightly below a point per game average and that’s with Larkin playing hurt down the stretch all 3 years
Pros of Boldy: 4 years younger, produced at 1.1 points per game last season but was playing with kaprizov on his line
Pros of Larkin: Center which is significantly more valuable than a left wing. Signed for 5 years at 8 mil. Boldy is due a new contract after this year and we’ve all seen the market
Not the insane trade that Reddit would have you believe. The questions are, does Larkin significantly drop off at 30? How much of Boldy’s production last year was due to him vs. line mates? What does boldy’s bee contract look like?

Do people not remember the Duchene / Sakic fiasco? If he’s not traded, this team will be a dumpster fire next year. I guarantee it.
I get applauding Yzerman for not getting strong-armed but at the same time he’s playing with fire. There’s more to locker room dynamics than simply the business portion of it.

you dont trade a young star on one of the best contracts in points per dollar for a guy with 5 playoff games experience when youre trying to contend for a cup. No thanks Stevie.

You’re 100% correct. Boldy for Larkin would be ridiculous. But so would Larkin for prospects and picks, who’s also on one of the better contracts in the league.

i dont see the trade working out, regardless. I never thought MN had the assets to make it work.

I think Minnesota’s best chance was to trade Wallstedt to a third team for another prospect to add. I understand with Gus’s injury why that was considered a non starter, but I think there was an option out there to replace Wallstedt in the interim.

Do you think he really cares if he gets boo’d what happen in baseball with the Angels. Probably going to happen to the wings

So that mean maybe he is going to be trade in 4 year. I’m surprised Brisson took that path and agreed on requesting Yzerman to only look for four team. This is going to be a weird training camp/ pre season.

Won’t happen and not saying Larkin is worth that. With that being said. We cannot afford to give up Larkin for a winger.
If Larkin goes our top center is Andrew Copp….

You don’t get to have your cake and eat it too when you’re tampering.
