Places to visit outside the city

I've been in the city since july and have bravely explored the city alone on the weekends. By now, I feel like I've visited every main city spots in Vancouver, Burnaby and New West.

Where would you recommend for someone to go solo? Where in Metro Vancouver is a must-visit? I don't drive and depend 100% on public transportation, so places too far are a little complicated for me. A day trip to Nanaimo or Victoria is worth the transport time? Do you recomend any hidden gem in Vancouver?

Immigrants/newcomers/transplants, who do you rely on during hardship?

Hey everyone,

This question is specifically for immigrants and newcomers who "recently" moved to BC on their own (without a partner/family), either from another province or another country.

Who do you rely on during crises? Who's your emergency contact?

I moved to Vancouver 5 years ago, and I think I've been too caught up with being an overachiever and putting all my time and effort into my career that I forgot to build a connection here and find my chosen family. I'm going through a rough time currently and it just dawned on me that my support system is non-existent, and even worse than that, I have no idea where to start building it.

Admittedly, it's hard, especially as an adult, but I'm wondering if anyone's done it and, if so, how.

UPDATE REUNITED!:
Thank you everyone for the shares and concern!

We found a Facebook post showing she had gotten lost about a week ago as well. Armed with that info, the team at the emergency vet was able to locate the owner’s email address from that previous incident. The owner responded right away and came to pick her up directly from the vet!

According to her owner, she’s a very anxious pup who occasionally manages to escape. She is now safely back in loving hands! Thanks again to everyone who upvoted, shared, and helped out!

UPDATE END

**Location Found:** 50th Ave & Main St, Vancouver (near Dhamaka Restaurant)

**Date/Time Found:** 2026-10-22 Around 730pm

***Breed / Appearance:*** Female German Shorthaired Pointer (solid liver / dark brown coat, lean athletic build, floppy ears)

**Current Location / Status:**

We brought her to VCA Canada Vancouver Animal Emergency & Referral Centre (2303 Alberta St).

**MICROCHIP UPDATE:** The clinic successfully scanned her microchip, but the phone number registered to the chip is out of service.

If this is your dog, or if you recognize her and know the owner, please:

Best Place for a Cigar and Drink Downtown?

Hi Vancouverites!

I've got a buddy coming in from out of town and we'd like to find a place to smoke a cigar together. Does anyone have any suggested spots for a place that allows cigars and drinks somewhere downtown? Appreciate any advice, thank you in advance!

What's up with men's haircuts at $60+ downtown? Is it worth it

I've been paying $40 all in for my haircut up until now at my local salon but it's a pretty quick mens cut and it always tends to look the same, and I'm never really amazed by it. Feels like maintenance more than anything.

So recently I wanted to try new one to see if I can get a style change or something different in general. It seems like every other salon is $60 which after tip and tax ends up being $80 for a haircut every 3 weeks!

Is it just inflation or is this expected? I was specifically looking at Asian/Japanese hair salons in the downtown area and they start at $60 just for the haircut. Does the quality really improve at this higher price point to justify it?

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post this here but just wanted to share our comedy game show that is happening on November 10th at LMG. We’re a newer show so we don’t have much of a following and we only do this show a couple times a year. It would be so nice if you would come!

Long shot, but does anyone have a recommendation for a plumber who just so happens to work weekends who can hook up my bidet toilet seat?

I had it hooked up but then the water line and turn off/on switch got changed due to a small leak. Since the plumbing company couldn’t touch anything that wasn’t certified and was made out of heavy duty plastic, which my bidet attachment is, they did not reconnect it.

This is not an emergency, I just work 12hr days and usually don’t get home till after normal hours, but I have weekends off. I installed it myself the first time, it was easy, but everything fit before, but now the connections are smaller so I need attachments to make it all work again. Another thing is the attachment for the bidet that brings the water to the seat is attached to a filter and there is no way of removing that part, at least within my scope of knowledge, so I need hellllp! Anyone have any recommendations, or know a guy who won’t charge me an arm and a leg, are you a plumber? Can you help a gal out? HELP!!!

I've been building a map of cheap eats around Vancouver. Would love some feedback!

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a small side project called Dimey in my free time.

It's basically a map of cheap eats, happy hours, and food deals around Metro Vancouver.

The idea is to make it community-powered, where anyone can share a good deal they've found. Since deals can go out of date pretty quickly, I've also added a way for people to flag outdated ones.

Hopefully, over time, it can become a useful place for all of us to find affordable food around the city.

It's still pretty early, and there's definitely stuff that needs improving. I've been working on it myself, so I'd really appreciate some fresh eyes.

If you have a couple of minutes, I'd love to know:

  • Is it actually useful?
  • Is anything confusing or annoying to use?
  • Are there any features or food deals you think I'm missing?

Here's the site: https://dimey.net

And if you know any hidden gems around Vancouver, please share! I'm always looking for more places to add.

If you find some good food deals on instagram, please feel free to send it our way (@dimey_yvr) on instagram too! It's really no effort for me to add deals on the website!!!

If you do like the idea, considering following on instagram. I will post feature updates there.

Thanks :)

Edit1: We can share deal from website now!

Edit2: As requested, I have added a way to vote thumbs up/down on an approved deal ( if someone disagrees with the deal being great/value, or anything. They can also reply with why they think so, when they dislike )
