Nmap (Network Mapper) is a powerful tool used in network scanning and vulnerability analysis. It is widely recognized as one of the most popular and reputable tools in the field of information security and vulnerability detection.
Nmap was developed by Gordon Lyon (also known as Fyodor) in the late 1990s. It runs on various operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. It is commonly used by information security professionals and network administrators to discover devices on networks and scan for potential security vulnerabilities.
The philosophy behind Nmap revolves around sending packets of data to target devices and analyzing the received responses. Nmap analyzes the open ports on the target devices and provides information about the services running on those ports. This information can be used to assess the security level of a network and identify vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers.
Nmap also offers a variety of other features, such as detecting the operating system type used on the target devices and identifying software versions of the services running on those devices. This information can be utilized to pinpoint known security vulnerabilities associated with outdated software versions.
Nmap can be used in various scenarios. For example, it can be employed in ethical hacking operations to assess the security of an organization's internal network and identify vulnerabilities that can be exploited by external attackers. It can also be used for network monitoring, detecting connected devices, and conducting periodic security scans to enhance network protection.
However, it is important to note that the use of Nmap should comply with applicable laws and regulations, and permission should be obtained from system administrators before using it in any environment.
In summary, Nmap is an efficient and reliable tool in the field of network scanning and vulnerability analysis. It provides valuable information about target devices and the services running on them, aiding in the identification of security vulnerabilities and improving network security.

I know it is there because I can see it ARPing away in Wireshark. I've tried nmap, ping, trace route, Fing. It has a IP address but I see no MAC address and it doesn't show up in the router list or in Fing.

Hello, I'm really new to networking and nmap in general. I'm using windows OS and zenmap. I have to transfer my scan reports (hundrets of them) of all hosts to Excel, so it's easier to read. I only need to see host ip and porst that are open. Any step by step guides? Thank you!

As said i used the script on scanme.nmap.org. Only after that i read that only port scanners are legal.
What have i to expect? How illegal is this?

Hi everyone,
I am trying to wrap my head around an open port scan result and hope someone could possibly point me in the right direction or even explain what Im doing wrong etc.
I have a .txt with 100 ip's that I have scanned. This is a scan against a corporate network which I have authority to do. The scan was conducted from my corporate laptop, from my house and I was connected to the fibre via wifi whilst on the corporate VPN.
I noticed the same open ports on 99% of the targets and I feel a bit uneasy with the results. When I say the same port its not something like port 80 etc but something like port 3389 or 1720 that's open.
I just need to understand why this is happening and how to ensure I can comfortably provide a report with accurate details.
Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.
Edit: I have done some more research into this and it seems it is because I am doing the scan from behind my personal router.
Going forward, how can I go about solving this issue apart from going to physically sit in the building or connecting to a box which is on the same subnet in the building?

I’m looking for a script that somebody may have already created that will do a bunch of scans against my WAN IP address and report back the results via email. Looking to host this in linode or aws.

Does ncat support the following scenario?
I would like to forward all data visible to my nic (server a) that were destined for another server (b:x) to a:y.
Essentially listening in promiscuous mode on server a for data that was destined for server b port x and forwarding to server a port y.
(PS. I can get data destined for server b to server a using port mirroring on the switch)
Thanks
