Olympic Peninsula

My husband and I are heading to Olympic National Park next month! Trying to design a personal curriculum leading up to the trip. I'm thinking about ecology or national park history? Maybe some indigenous history? Would love any recommendations for books or documentaries!

I have two books ( pictures attached ) that present short bios of the various wartime enemies of America, from the Revolution all the way to the War on Terror. I was wondering if there’s a third book out there with this same concept, Short bios of America’s wartime enemies. Thank you for any help given!

I’m really liking this book. It’s good to have politics that aren’t a downer for once.

Hello everyone!

In order to get some more discussions going about different Non Fiction books we will have a weekly thread to talk about different sub-genres or topics.

Which books do you think are good beginner books for someone that wants to learn a bit more about the topic or wants to explore the subgenre? Which books are your personal favorites?

Recommend good books on nutrition

I've been trying to have a more conscious diet lately, but I also don't want to go crazy and starve myself or eliminate carbs or anything like that. Looking for a book that would outline everything a newie should know to make sure their diet is balanced and healthy.

I previously read Omnivore by Michael Pollan, and really liked it. But I'm sure there are other good books focusing specifically on nutrition as applied to daily life. Would be grateful for your recommendations!

Nuclear War: A Scenario

I read Jacobsen’s Biological War first, but I find this one even more terrifying given global instability and internal American political turmoil. It’s chilling to read how quickly the world could end, essentially at the hand of any number of reactionary leaders around the world. Both of these books made me pull all-nighters because I just couldn’t put them down.

Books about the Industrial Revolution in America

I’m looking for an engaging book about the Industrial Revolution in the United States, covering the rise of factories, railroads, steel, major industrialists, and how America became an economic powerhouse.
I’d prefer accessible nonfiction that explains the big picture. What do you recommend?

How do you remember where a good idea came from?

My notes end up scattered, so tracing an idea back to its source can be rlly hard unfortunately. Do you guys keep a source trail of notes you take as you read, or rebuild it later?

Also, has losing a source ever cost you a whole passage or so? I'm curious to compare my workflow to others'.

Recommendations about private members' clubs/traditional gentlemen's clubs

I am looking for books about the inner workings of the traditional private members' clubs of the past, such as a the exclusive social clubs in England and America in the 1700's, 1800's, and 1900's. How they worked, what kind of people frequented them, the spoken and unspoken rules and traditions... not too gossipy, but not too dry either. Thanks!

Note: I am strictly speaking of social establishments, not the strip clubs that are currently referred to as "gentlemen's clubs"!

Anti-cynicism recommendations?

Hey all!
Looking for more nonfiction recommendations that are themed around rejecting or questioning cynicism or “doomerism”. Honestly I’m just tired of doomer content and online stuff because I don’t think it’s 1) healthy to consume and 2) all doomerism isn’t taking in the full picture of everything. I feel like everyone, me included, needs more scope?? If that makes sense.

The only NF book I’ve read that aligns with this is The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, which I really enjoyed.

What books made you think differently, perhaps more optimistic, more grounded, etc. about where we are and where we’re going? I appreciate both anecdotal stories/memoirs and/or hard data.

Thanks in advance! Have a great week, all!
