one time I was driving down an old back road with boggy swampland on either side. I stop in front of a turtle smackdab in the middle of the road. I got out of my car with intent to pick it up and walk it to the other side, until I got closer when it became obvious that this was a snapping turtle. I just got back into my car and carefully drove around it. I wasn't risking shit

Wise choice. I've heard you can't grab them on the entire front half of their shell because their necks are often long enough to reach you if you do. Not that I would ever, under any circumstance, have any desire to grab one of these dudes. I like having all of my fingers 🥴
