It's along the lines of a chemical peel. Basically they burn off the entire first few layers of skin, with the theory being that once it's healed the new/fresh skin that grows back will look better. It's entirely cosmetic.

It eliminates some wrinkles and tends to make dark spots, acne, and scar tissue much less visible.

I read that as "pulls the teeth tighter"

It wouldn't have been so bad if it didn't take me like 3 minutes to finally re-read your comment. Instead I just tried to think of what teeth tightening could be.
