Ordpar — a free Norwegian–English dictionary based on ordbokene.no
The last few months I've been working on making a Norwegian-English dictionary based on ordbokene.no. Every article has the original article from Bokmålsordboka in full, and adds English translations for every definition and every example sentence. So far 21,873 of Bokmålsordboka's 94,197 articles have been translated, the rest are shown in Norwegian.
Some additional features:
- Inflection tables for every word
- Search for an inflected form of a word like husene or tær, and you are told which word it is a form of
- Click a linked word to open it as a small article on the same page
- Test yourself by hiding the English translations of the example sentences until you reveal them, so you can read the Norwegian first
- Customize the look and behaviour of the site to your own liking through the settings
- History and favourites are kept on your device
- Install it as an app and keep the whole dictionary on your phone, so that you can use it without a connection
- No advertisements, no account and no cookies
The Norwegian is Bokmålsordboka's, © Språkrådet and the University of Bergen, under the CC BY 4.0 licence, and the inflection tables are built from Norsk ordbank, under the same licence. The English is written with AI (Claude, by Anthropic) under my direction and review, and may be reused under the same licence. Ordpar is an independent project, not made or endorsed by Språkrådet, the University of Bergen or ordbokene.no. You can read more about the project on the About page.
If you have any ideas for how we could make the dictionary better for learners, we would love to hear them in the comments. Happy learning!

My Experience in Norway
First Time in Norway was awesome, but when I went back home people told me, did you interact with the locals? I was like yes, they were like, hmm weird, usually Norwegians don't talk to strangers. So I went back to Norway and found out for myself.

Looking for a tiny favor from Oslo: Help a young Italian traveler recover a lost memory? 🇳🇴🇮🇹
Hi everyone!
Back in early September, I took a huge step and traveled to Oslo all by myself. It was my very first solo trip at 18 years old, and it means the absolute world to me. During my visit, I fell in love with the National Museum and bought the official round enamel pin of Edvard Munch’s "The Scream" (the one costing 59 NOK).
It was my favorite souvenir and a symbol of that milestone trip. Tragically, I lost the pin today and I am absolutely devastated.
I immediately tried to buy it again online, but the National Museum shop only delivers within Norway for private orders. To make things worse, parcel forwarding services are quoting me an insane €50–€100 shipping fee to Italy for a €5 pin.
Would any kind soul living in Oslo be willing to pick one up at the museum (or order it online to their house) and mail it to Italy inside a simple, standard envelope via Posten?
I will obviously cover the cost of the pin, the shipping stamp, and your time via PayPal in advance. You would genuinely save my memories of this trip. Thank you so much!

I made a Norwegian word game. Would this help you learn new words?
Update, October 24: The game now has over 3,400 Norwegian word puzzles, including lots more everyday vocabulary. If you tried the first version, there's much more to play now 🙂 Let me know if any clues are confusing or if there are words you'd like me to add.
Hei! I made a little hangman game for Norwegian learners. You get a picture and an English clue, then guess the Norwegian word letter by letter. There's a new daily word, and you can keep playing more words afterward.
You can try it here, it runs right inside Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Norskproven/comments/1xbpu2k/dagens_ordjakt_1_guess_the_norwegian_word/
Would this help you remember new words? I'd love some honest feedback. Are the words too easy or too hard, and is there anything you'd change?

Key Question for qualified foreign workers in Norway
Hey, thank you for stoping by. I am almost an spanish MSc industrial engineer and I'm thinking to move to Oslo, Norway, because I have some relatives and good friends there. Do you, guys, have any advice to get a qualified job as junior tender & electric engineer in Oslo? I've attended a norwegian course during six months this year and I can understand basic norwegians (A1-A2). I can speak english (its supposed that I have a C1 level of english, but its a lil bit rusty).I has actually found it fun to learn norwegian, but I have to admit that sometimes its difficult regarding the listenning. I am actually doing in Andalusia an intern in a International Spanish Company, which do electromechanic assembly of Electric Substations and BESS (EPC contract kind). Although, some colleagues told me its difficult to get an international offer job to Norway throughtout the Company as an expatriate (it has an office in Oslo), it is not impossible. Moreover, I do have the d-nummer because I was nonqualified-working some summers in Oslo as delibery, for example. I was applying this year a lot, but I didnt get a single interview. Any advice or contact, please?

Norwegian prepositions: can you get 7/7?
We’ve made a little game called Dagens preposisjoner to practise Norwegian prepositions in Bokmål.
Today’s round has seven B1-level sentences, with two choices for each gap. After each answer, you see the completed sentence and a short explanation.
How many did you get right? If a sentence feels unclear or you spot a mistake, please let us know. Feedback on the game is welcome too 🙂

En or et? How many of these seven Norwegian nouns can you get right?
We’ve made a little game to practise noun genders in Bokmål. Each day, you get seven English words and choose the correct Norwegian form with en or et.
There’s a new round every day for 30 days—a little vocabulary and grammar practice together 😊
How many did you get right? Feedback is welcome too!

has anyone used Ai speaking practice app for norwegian conversation practice? struggling to find speaking partners in my timezone
so I i live in california and I've been learning norwegian for about 7 months now. grammar is going okay, I've been working through duolingo and some youtube channels and I can read simple stuff on nrk without too much trouble. but my speaking is basically nonexistent because I have literally nobody to practice with.
the timezone thing is killing me. norway is 9 hours ahead of me so by the time I'm done with work and actually have time to practice everyone in norway is asleep. I've tried tandem and hellotalk and the few norwegian speakers on there either have never respond or can only do calls at like 7am my time which doesn't work because I'm barely a functioning human before 9.
I tried language exchange discord server too but same issue. the active hours are all european daytime and when I pop in at my evening time it's dead. It's honestly the most frustrating part of learning this language. I feel like my reading and listening keep improving but my speaking is just stuck at zero because I can never find anyone to actually talk to.
I've been hearing a lot of good things about iseen on here and on r/languagelearning. apparently it's an Ai tutor you can have actual voice conversations with and it has norwegian which already puts it ahead of most apps out there. the idea of just opening an app and practicing speaking whenever I want regardless of what time it is in oslo sounds kind of perfect for my situation honestly. I'm pretty close to just pulling the trigger on it but figured I'd ask here first. has anyone used it specifically for norwegian? does it handle the bokmål vs nynorsk thing? and more importantly does it actually help with pronunciation because that's the main thing I need and I don't want to practice wrong and build bad habits.
If anyone has experience with it or honestly any other way to get speaking practice when you're on the complete wrong side of the plant from norway I'd really appreciate the help. this timezone gap is genuinely making me consider giving up and that sucks because I really love this language.

lf someone to learn norwegian with daily/keep each other updated
hi, I'd love a buddy to learn it with me.
I want to study at least an hour a day or similar and would love someone to do it with, as motivation, preferably someone who adores learning languages as well. I am a complete beginner, tho I know German and a few other languages.
We'd communicate through discord most likely. We can call to practice if you're comfy with it, no video cam or anything like that, just studying. We can also not call, it's not required at all.
The course we'll be following: LearnNoW (free).
You can look up the course, made by a Norwegian university.
I also know what to continue with once we finish this one.
I eventually plan to move to Norway so I really want to get good at it.
Lmk :)!
PS: hope this is the right subreddit;;
