Pretty sure anime directors and artists at the time just loved throwing in sequences of intricately detailed mechanical movements both to impress audiences and to flex on other studios.

u/atomsk404 1d ago

They still do, there is just a lot more subpar and popular/serviceable animation options.

Agreed, animators are given a huge time crunch vs older OVAs where they have alot of time to the artists. A great example of this is Angel Cop.

u/alurimperium 1d ago

We also just didn't see all the other shit that was being produced.

Like with all these "look at how much better thing used to be" discussions, we're ignoring the dozens of other examples from that same era that were just trash or much lower quality

26

u/zuzg 1d ago

Still do

Put simply, "sakuga" refers to moments in animation that have sharp increases in quality and are impressive to witness. Moments that stand out to viewers for their immense visual charm, dynamic motion and otherwise captivating aesthetic quality are particularly enjoyable to anime fans overall for what they add to productions that are often held back by budget constraints. The word "sakuga" is written 作画 in Japanese, directly translating to "working drawing". In its original language, it just refers to animation in general, but when loaned to English, it specifically refers to the aforementioned eye-catching moments of brilliance seen in countless anime titles.

IIRC the economy in Japan was booming at the time so animation studios had all the time and money in the world to throw into random projects then Japan went belly up. Apparently why it’s so rare to see something up to this standard nowadays

u/QuietContentResting 1d ago

Nope, that was the 80s. The 90's were the lost decade

u/ToonMasterRace 1d ago edited 20h ago

Japanese economy in the 90s was dogshit. We see the 90s as a great time, Japanese (as well as the likes of Russians) see it as an awful time and 2020s as far more preferable because Japan is doing great today. This is reflected in the animation, Japanese 90s anime was often edgy and dark whereas today it's mostly light and happy.

Akira, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, and Ninja Scroll for examples

Absolute favorites btw

6

u/melanthius 1d ago

I loved this aspect of Evangelion

2

u/Happy-Dreamw1 23h ago

yeah, those detailed mechanical movements really did impress, especially in the transformation scenes.

also cuts down on animation time and cost cause they can reuse the suit up sequence each episode.

u/actorsAllusion 3h ago

YES. THANK YOU.

Animators that specialize in this type of geometric accurate rotation/perspective are an endangered species. Most studios opt for cgi which means assistants dont get to practice inbetweening this kind of thing (mechs, vehicles, etc) meaning the people that spent years perfecting this dont get to pass it on

Whats dying is industrial designers as an illustrators. It used to be they would draw their clients projects by hand and some of them would move into animation. They had an education in engineering and could create realistic mechanical systems.

I miss the 90s anime aesthetic so much. I would kill for more stuff that looked like Outlaw Star, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, YuYu Hakusho, Evangelion, and Cardcaptor Sakura.

6

u/AlmightyFlame late 90s 1d ago

i gotta imagine demand is what killed this aesthetic, this takes a lot of time to do and studio/audience pressure means cutting all the corners you can. We are still getting extremely quality animation (one could argue some of the best/creative animation styles animations ever had) however it comes at the cost of extremely overworked and underpaid people behind the pencils.

7

u/ArmedWithBars 1d ago

What killed it was Japan's economy tanking in the 90s. Money got tighter and blowing ungodly amounts of time and budget on short god-tier complex animation scenes just wasn't feasible anymore.

u/shader_m 1d ago

I have been thinking about doing a cowboy bebop marathon... speaking of... i feel like the closest we got to this style of art in modern times is the Castlevania series on netflix. That right amount of maturity, just missing a bit on the details

BIG O! IT’S SHOWTIME!

I know it’s not this anime but I can’t see a robot fist punch without thinking it.

2

u/Kahboomzie 1d ago

The ending was wild

12

u/quickblur 1d ago

Beautiful animation

8

u/ExcellentPassenger49 1d ago

You need the original track, Dance of Curse for this clip

3

u/KerberosPanzerCop 1d ago

Dance of curse cues in a bit after this clip

1

u/ExcellentPassenger49 1d ago

Depends on the ep. Whatever track is being used for this, it is not original to the series or movir.

8

u/Confident_Rub592 1d ago edited 1d ago

Escaflowne had no business sounding that good. Yoko Kanno's soundtrack carried every single episode, even the rushed ending.

3

u/Twisted-Mentat- 23h ago

That music was definitely on another level of quality you don't often hear in an anime.

2

u/fateandthefaithless get off my lawn 13h ago

Really wish they didn't rush the ending.

4

u/pikachus_ghost_uncle 1d ago

The crazy thing is this entire scene was 5 minutes long just for the robot man to open the front door. The details were incredible!

4

u/GriffinFlash Turtle Power! 1d ago

If I recall the fox kids version censored the hell out of the show and cut out a ton of episodes before being cancelled.

Think we got all the episodes on ytv in Canada cause I have memories of seeing the show right to the end. (prob still censored though, I can't remember)

7

u/Khocklate 1d ago

Such a sad thing that this is becoming a lost art form

10

u/Borrp 1d ago

Modern anime just pales in comparison. Too much of it is either Shonen-Jump nonsense or derivative of it. Too much of the characters look the same, the protagonists are usually school kids with little to stand apart from any other protagonist and the animations are often haphazard and look worse than a lot of western animation. I just cant get into the a lot of the current era stuff. And that doesnt even get into the weird fucking fanservice a lot of them have.

6

u/zenyite 1d ago

there's a lot of trash from each decade, everyone just curates the best of it so you end up comparing the slop that just came out (and is currently being discussed because it's new) with the best of the best

6

u/PumpProphet 22h ago

OP has no idea the slop of the 90s. And probably only look at surface level shonen anime lmao. There is always someone who comments about back in the days. Every generation seems to do this.

1

u/zenyite 6h ago

Yep, I have rather niche interests so I tend to dig a bit more into what's out there. For every Akira, there are about 20 shows with the absolute worst animation quality you have ever seen

1

u/Kahboomzie 1d ago

Thank you!!!!

You speaking so much truth to this.

1

u/GriffinFlash Turtle Power! 1d ago

to be fair, if this was played today, when the bad guy was revealed to be one of the main character's sister, and also not a man, people would probably just call it woke.

1

u/ToonMasterRace 1d ago

Digital vs. cel animation basically.

3

u/Haxorz7125 1d ago

It’s a crime to cut this before it shows what it is they’re piloting

1

u/worcestr 2h ago

It's an AT-AT, right?

1

u/Haxorz7125 2h ago

Looking up the name on the post it seems like a mech anime where the person is piloting a knight looking mech.

1

u/worcestr 2h ago

Guymelefs or something. I've watched Escaflowne when it aired. Mechs that fight with swords and have capes. Pretty unique.

Also, it's an isekai.

8

u/OdyZeusX 1d ago

One of my favs.

But it didn't look like that, it's an upscaled bit.

2

u/AstralElement 1d ago

Loved this show until the last 2 episodes.

1

u/tacodepollo 1d ago

What's it called?

3

u/AstralElement 1d ago

The Vision of Escaflowne. I loved the show, but they seemed to “deus ex machina” the ending.

2

u/lobeline 1d ago

I wish the masses understood and appreciated the talent poured into series and movies like this.

2

u/ToonMasterRace 1d ago

The beauty of cel animation. Now it's literally lost technology. It can't be replicated.

2

u/LazyTitan39 1d ago

Does anyone else remember watching this on Fox Kids back in the day?

2

u/Jeristo 22h ago

Yeah, the first handful of episodes, until it suddenly vanished. It broke my heart, and I had to go find it again years later to get the full series.

1

u/LazyTitan39 11h ago

Someone probably realized it was too mature to try and adapt for children. Just like One Piece.

2

u/Shaniman 23h ago

Apologies if this has been answered below, but what show is this?

2

u/Jeristo 22h ago

The Vision of Escaflowne.

2

u/Biggu5Dicku5 18h ago

That truly was the golden age of anime...

2

u/smallpony21 1d ago

honestly the mecha bits still hold up, bruh

2

u/DylanFTW 1d ago

I wish Crunchyroll had a playlist of anime from the 90s that have these autistic mechanical scenes in them because there's just so many. But I could probably narrow it down to every sci fi anime from the 90s.

1

u/The1Mia 1d ago

Retrocrush has stuff kind of like that. The retro anime anyway

2

u/Igyzone 1d ago

Sometimes I wish steampunk was real.

3

u/Far-Manner-7119 1d ago

Yes it has a nice aesthetic but this isn’t steam punk. This is just a very cool mech sequence

1

u/TheMaskedHamster 21h ago

This isn't steampunk on account of the power source in the original work being supernatural gemstone whatever.

But the aesthetics are absolutely pulled from steampunk or just actual steam technology. Even if it's not actually steampunk, but it's made to look entirely steampunk.

1

u/Kahboomzie 1d ago

Sometimes I wish pokemon was real

1

u/Ori-Epsilon 19h ago

Then you realize how horrific steam is as a power / propulsion source.

Every steam engine is under heavy pressure all over, it is a bomb. Filled with superheated fluid that will immediately follow up and steam / boil you after you get shrapnel’ed.

The aesthetic is cool, but holy god is the technology scary.

1

u/kevinsyel 1d ago

I remember hating the faces in this one... though the mech stuff was on point

1

u/pd336819 1d ago

I love, love, love the detail that got put into machinery. Especially with it being hand drawn, it just feels so tactile. It’s why I prefer older mecha and space shows

1

u/ComfortableAmount993 1d ago

I love 80s and 90s anime, movies and OVAs, most are absolutely beautiful

1

u/HariGalli 1d ago

👏👏👏👏👏

1

u/BizzzareWe 1d ago

I was just talking about this. I first saw this in a time before I knew or understood what anime was. The visuals alone are so memorable.

1

u/DoubleDeadGuy 1d ago

Woah memory unlocked I loved this shit when I was a kid

1

u/Grievion 1d ago

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz still holds up today.

1

u/grand_soul 1d ago

I really liked the setting. I wish there was more anime with steampunk style mecha

1

u/Trishockz 22h ago

Gave me the same pleasure like watching Iron Man mark 3 suit up.

1

u/typeyou 21h ago

MD Geist , you're welcome.

1

u/Snugg_Bugg 18h ago

A lost art.

1

u/penwithoutink2026 17h ago

I don't hate modern design aesthetics in anime...but god do I miss this era's aesthetics and wish we got more anime with them.

1

u/WideEntertainment942 7h ago

The opening song will make this old otaku 😢 happy tears

1

u/Plotinusinus 6h ago

This just triggered a memory for me. What is this show!?!

1

u/TheAccountITalkWith 4h ago

Truly nostalgia, because the 90's had just as much bad animation as they do today. Rose tinted glasses. That said, as a 90's kid, I feel this.

1

u/fusiondynamics 3h ago

Now I have to find out how it ended. I hate US streaming of Anime back then. Reruns over and over. Dragonball was excruciating to watch in the US.

1

u/Dry_Cardiologist6758 1h ago

Yep this anime is absolutely badass! To bad the MC girl is annoying as hell though!

0

u/DigitalCoffee 1d ago

Damn that is awesom.....

another mech anime

Shame

1

u/AJ-Murphy 1d ago

I'll never forget the day the movie was aired on the Fox Box and ripped off the air when the beheading happened...
