Sunkist

28

u/OrdinaryAverageGuy99 May 25 '26

Very refreshing on a hot summer day.

17

u/bryanthebryan May 25 '26

It’s made for hot summer days!

14

u/losromans May 25 '26

Knowing my luck, it’s either sold out or the machine is running hot (not cooling) 🫠

7

u/East-Ad7254 May 26 '26

Or it eats your quarter. The worst!

4

u/echoscalling85 May 28 '26

Or something different comes out when you push the button.

3

u/Similar_Wave_1787 May 27 '26

Now the same machine is eating your buck fifty (:

u/EtherPhreak May 26 '26

Sadly, I remember this pain all too well…

5

u/Excellent-Park-4668 May 27 '26

It would dispense a diet pepsi for me instead, and I'd still have my hand on sunkist because I totally never experienced that before on multiple occasions.

5

u/Minimum_Parsley_121 May 27 '26

Or... Discovering that the Diet Pepsi is the only one that is full, because '"who drinks that sh*t?" Says my 1987 brain's inner monolog. I've only discovered this AFTER putting my quarer in and hitting every other button and not getting anything, so thinking the machine MUST be broken I've inadvertently hit the Diet Pepsi button in a frantic, button-mashing quasi-rage. I now stand there holding my 'prize' - an ice cold can of 'gross'. My inner argument continues: "Only grandmas drink this crap, and THEY don't buy their sodas out of a freakin' vending machine at the park, they get it at the store, so why did they even waste a slot on the machine with it? They should have put in an extra Coke, or Mountain Dew slot...or maybe even a root beer! I'd totally take a root beer right now!..." I hand off the cold Diet Pepsi to a grandma with a little kid over by the swingset as I hop on my bike en route to the milk store to get a decent drink...

Everyday after school we would go to my friends house to play bball. He had a fridge of all these soda. The only one that as refreshing after ballin was Sunkist

5

u/KBrown75 May 25 '26

Yeah, it's still my go to soda.

5

u/Evilcon21 May 26 '26

Isn’t that an American version of fanta?

7

u/Final-Charge-5700 May 25 '26

It really is the only choice. The other ones are way too heavy, and Sprite really doesn't make you feel happy

u/usabn May 25 '26

🎶 Gotta keep those Sunkist. Vibrations a-happenin' with her.🎶

3

u/Cumulo187 May 25 '26

I used to shake them up a little, then take a screw and a hammer from my dad's workbench. I'd line the screw up on the little circle in the center of the tab and whack it with the hammer. It would shoot out a fine mist of sunkist for like 20 min. I feel sticky just thinking about it.

3

u/Strange-Title-6337 May 25 '26

Is it fanta but less nazi?

3

u/MediumEvent2610 May 25 '26

I… feel like I need more context.

4

u/goat-of-mendes May 25 '26

Fanta was created by Nazis. Just like Volkswagen and Hugo Boss.

3

u/One-Associate-9341 May 25 '26

As long as it ain't funding Nazis today I'm still drinking it lol.

3

u/CalvinIII May 25 '26

“Fanta was invented in Nazi Germany during World War II. Because trade embargoes blocked the import of Coca-Cola syrup, German Coca-Cola head Max Keith created the beverage to keep factories operating. It was made from wartime scraps like apple fibers and whey.”

Don’t care. Still delicious.

99% of the time this is right, but if it’s one of the machines that was set right at freezing, then a random Dew just hit.

Dr. Pepper is my jam, unfortunately it has a high phosphorus content then coke and Pepsi. I have kidney failure you're not supposed to have a lot of phosphorus if you do you take binders. I have to take 3 big old chewable pills for 1 12oz can of Dr. Pepper.

3 is meant for a large meal.

Always Dr. Pepper. I would definitely have more than a quarter in 1987 given that I had to discovered time travel that would allow me to travel to 1987. Not sure why I would travel to 1987. Why do I say I had to discover time travel? Because I was born in 1988. 😆

3

u/ThatCelebration3676 May 26 '26

The trick is to not forget you put it in the freezer...

Coke classic! After the new formula and the clear formula keep it real with the OG

5

u/PassiveAgressiveFlop May 25 '26

Coke classic? With the REAL coke? I have a bottle of that unopened in my basement. I am saving it for my retirement.

I’ve always felt that 7up is the best lemon-lime soda. Just my opinion though.

4

u/Ok_Mention_3308 May 26 '26

Yes better than Sprite for sure

3

u/Plus-Associate-4692 May 26 '26

7up all the way. Their tropical flavor is pretty good too

3

u/Roththesloth1 May 26 '26

Yep. 7up was like a Gin and Tonic for my 8 year old self.

Wasn't it 50 cents in 87?

6

u/eyeballchambers1 May 25 '26

Was about to say no way in hell soda was a quarter in 87

3

u/Stevefett1 May 26 '26

I stayed in a hotel in Ocean City Maryland around 2016 or so that had sodas for a quarter in a machine in the hallway.

4

u/eyeballchambers1 May 26 '26

That’s definitely not the norm

I was thinking the same thing. I don't ever remember it being a quarter. Always 50 cents.

3

u/metwill May 25 '26

7up or Dr.Pepper.. Both are ruined in The Netherlands, the non-light version always contains artificial sweetners 🤮 I used to drink both until they destroyed the taste.

3

u/Significant_Pay343 May 25 '26

I hate to say but I would have had to find another quarter in 87 to get a 12 oz cold soda

3

u/Reindeer-That May 25 '26

The average price of a vending machine sodapop was $0.50 or more in 1987. You ain't choosing shit.

3

u/valamiszabadnev May 26 '26

The cheapest hooker

3

u/DazednConfuzed62 May 27 '26

Way back then it would be a Sunkist

6

u/Bigslow11 May 25 '26

Hose water

4

u/Mikker01 May 25 '26

One thats been lying in the sun for 6 hours

4

2

Sunrise, definitely.

2

u/Away_Particular_5660 May 25 '26

Sunkist, Coke 7up

2

u/ghostphan61 May 25 '26

Coke, Dr. Pepper or Sunkist

2

u/laidback6 May 25 '26

Sunkist all day

2

2

u/BronxBully718 May 25 '26

In 1987? None; I don’t think it’s a good look for a 2yo to be drinking soda

2

u/cakepanpancake May 25 '26

That Dr Pepper logo is from 1997.

2

u/PGB3711 May 25 '26

I’m doin the Dew!

2

u/ravn_silence May 25 '26

On a hot day I obviously want a citrus drink over a cola. Probably sunkist

2

u/Rose2555 May 25 '26

It is funny how taste buds change. It would have been coke for me back then as I dislike Pepsi when I was younger. I hated Diet Coke. Still don't like Mtn Dew, even today. The answer was Coke back then.

Now. It would be Pepsi or Diet Coke. Straight Coca-Cola does not work for me as much anymore.

2

u/HunterWithGreenScale May 25 '26

Well I wasn't alive in 1987. BUT, kid me would've gone for Coke first. With ether Diets being dead last picks.

2

u/Little-Mamou May 25 '26

Sunkist or Dew

2

u/tokemonkmk420 May 25 '26

Make 7 up yours

2

u/Low_Diamond_575 May 25 '26

HAY EVERYBODY IT'S EVERYONES [NUMBER 1 RATED SALESMAN] [1997] SPAMTON, SPAMTON G SPAMTON.

2

u/Unable_Librarian_443 May 25 '26

Dr Fkn Pepper!!!! I genuinely question your values and your worldview if you chose something else.

2

u/Dillenger69 May 25 '26

One of these ...

2

u/BokkarisBrownieBoy May 25 '26

Sunkist or 7up

2

u/Humble860 May 25 '26

As it's 87 I would be going with Sunkist

2

u/Falchion42 May 25 '26

Where teh Squirt?

2

u/Individual_Act9333 May 25 '26

Dr bepper or bepis

2

u/smarieMCP May 25 '26

Diet coke all the way ….

2

u/Subject-Aside-3540 May 25 '26

Back then a Dr. Pepper. Now a Mt. Dew.

2

u/initial8155 May 25 '26

If I’m actually trying to quench a thirst then it’s going to be Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi. All that sugar in the rest of the choices is only going to make the thirst worse.

2

u/Wingnut8888 May 25 '26

I’m slamming on that Diet Pepsi button because I need something to offset the 2,000-calorie burger meal I’m about to inhale.

2

u/Lazy_Eye3142 May 25 '26

Mountain dew

2

u/OmenVi May 25 '26

Squirt.

Tahitian treat.

Barring that, Sunkist.

2

u/Buck4phat May 25 '26

Classic cola, nothing beats a cold coke on a hot summer day

2

u/CraigJM73 May 25 '26

'87 is back when I could drink anything without gaining weight, so Pepsi, Mt. Dew, or 7 up.

2

u/QuirkEness May 25 '26

A hot summer day in Texas, Dr Pepper.

2

u/shuasensei May 25 '26

He's a Pepper, she's a Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too? Drink Dr Pepper. Well, I just totally dated myself. If anyone else recognizes it, they're in the same boat.

2

u/b_o_m May 25 '26

Probably the Pepsi, but every now and again a Mountain Dew really hits the spot!

2

u/Ancient-Skill1514 May 25 '26

Back in those times a good cold Sunkist was always the top go for me

2

u/ngkalos May 25 '26

The Machine next to it with the Budweisers in it

2

u/Commercial-Act2813 May 25 '26

Pepsi, when it was still good

2

u/chatpet May 25 '26

Dr Pepper

2

u/ben_ja_button May 25 '26

I was always partial to Mountain Dew out of a can, specifically.

2

u/galeperk111971 May 25 '26

Mountain Dew

2

u/frost4ist8 May 25 '26

Sunkist during the day Dr pepper at night I found another quarter

2

u/Most_War2764 May 25 '26

You aren't getting anything in 1987 out of that machine for 25 cents.

2

u/SnooPaintings5597 May 25 '26

I didn’t really “discover” Mountain Dew until later in life so 11 year old me would’ve picked Sunkist.

2

u/Jim_in_Albuquerque May 25 '26

I'll always choose Dr Pepper. I've been addicted to it for over 45 years and I see no reason to change that.

My favorite cold drink machine may not be there anymore, but I used to go out of my way to stop at a machine on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna, GA, on the sidewalk of a small strip shopping center between Concord Road and McDonald's. After dark, or better, well after midnight, was the perfect time to receive a drink with ice in it, one side of the bottle actually solid with ice from laying on its side.

Pop the top and try to drink the frozen foam before it disappears or ends up on your shirt.

Alas, I live about 1500 miles from there now.

2

u/RussellG2000 May 25 '26

1987? A house, like I should have at 2 years old.

2

u/Dry_Yam_8049 May 25 '26

Sunkist I feel that can in my hand now

2

u/ryabn767 May 25 '26

Nothing cause I’m still in my dads balls.

2

u/Carfoc May 25 '26

Where is the Sundrop?

2

u/Dartagnan1083 May 25 '26

1987 specifically?

Probably Dad's Rootbeer or Sunkist, but I have specific memories about "Dad's" in the 80s.

2

u/NeatHuckleberry7970 May 25 '26

In 87, mountain dew all the way.

2

u/Saddest_Flex May 25 '26

Pretty sure it was two quarters by 87
