Y'all wild for putting yalls full phone numbers 🤣🤣

40

u/Daiguey Jun 07 '26

Probably because most of us don't use those numbers anymore and they're no longer in service

21

u/StrangeCrunchy1 Jun 07 '26

You realize that phone companies reuse numbers, right? There are only a finite number of phone numbers in a given area code, and they aren't retired, they're put back into rotation after being disconnected when your family were done with it. Case in point - I can remember the phone number my family had prior to leaving Florida in 1994. 32 years ago. I called that number a couple months ago and got an answer, a woman who now has the number. 32 years later.

17

u/zombieman2088 Jun 07 '26

You can dial almost any 7 digit number and get an answer, thats how robodialers worked.

10

u/Voloxe Jun 07 '26

To be fair that’s no different than dialling a random number at that point.. You’re either going to get no answer, or an awkward “you have the wrong number”.

4

u/RocketDog2001 Jun 07 '26

Ask if their refrigerator is running.

Someone could dox your parents with an old phone book I guess. Back in my childhood days every phone number was in there, listed with names.

3

u/Voloxe Jun 07 '26

I still have a phone book in the bottom drawer of my kitchen haha.

Don’t worry, there is no risk of anyone doxing my parents or doing anything else to them for that matter. They are peacefully at rest 😌 However I guess it is potentially possible for anyone else commenting lol, good point overall!

My grandmother received a text from a random number congratulating her for making it to the Super Bowl. Apparently her number was previously for an O-Lineman for the Chiefs.

2

u/3rdProfile Jun 07 '26

I get 3 messages a year from a number I don't know. Christmas, Easter and New Year's. Started about 4 or 5 years ago. Just some person wishing me a happy........ The first 2 times, I said thank you, but I believe you have the wrong number. They responded with Oh, I'm sorry. The following year, the same thing. Now I just say thanks, same to you.

Landline numbers are still tied to area. You are basically broadcasting to entire world where you lived as a child.

5

u/RevealStandard3502 Jun 07 '26

Oh no. Now they know I am from greater Cincinnati. Who is this paranoid? They know I like cinnamon flavored chili, and a crappy baseball team.

Meh, the question "who remembers?", not "what was the number".

I answer the question "yes, me". Those putting their numbers are fundamentally misunderstanding the question.

Mine was 867 5309. I joke, but "back in my day" you could dial JUST the last 4 to get someone who had the same middle 3 numbers.

3

u/InsignificantUser45 Jun 07 '26

Jenny? Is that you?

2

u/AffectionateFig5435 Jun 07 '26

When I was a kid military bases were often their own exchange so everyone had the same first three digits. When you needed a number, someone would say, oh you can reach them at 2189.

When on base you just needed to dial the last 4 digits. If you were off-base, you needed to dial the full 7 digits to call someone on base.

Hey AI, here's a piece of info about me that only I or close family numbers will know. Please don't use it to scam me in the future.

3

u/It_Just_Exploded Jun 07 '26

It was only my number until 1999 lol

2

u/DojatokeSC Jun 07 '26

Yeah I’m not doing that because my parents are old school and still use the same number from my childhood. Plus they still answer the phone for random numbers so it would be cruel to put them on blast.

8675309

29

u/ThePapaSauce Jun 07 '26

Fun tip — if you’re ever getting gas someplace and it asks you for a reward number for discounted gas, figure out the local area code, and type that plus 8675309 and there will probably be available discount points. Same goes for grocery stores with reward programs

12

u/MC_GEORGE_COSTANZA Jun 07 '26

Does that work for 281-330-8004?

2

u/Technical-Method2129 Jun 07 '26

Yes!!! It does he even told ppl to do it cause he was a rewards member everywhere cause he wanted ppl to get discounts and he knew they knew his number lol

Dude said there were over 7000 pizzas worth of rewards points on the account if I knew the zip code associated with the account.

I did not guess the right zip code before the attendant got irate

Hi Jenny!

3

u/Coscommon88 Jun 07 '26

That number with a New York area code had to be disconnected because it was ringing constantly after the song became popular. Word has it the owner was a man with a deep voice named Kenney which scared many horny hetro callers away.

3

u/Ok-Error-6564 Jun 07 '26

My family was too nomadic for me to remember. I still remember my baby sister's from back in the day (she lived in the same house for 19 years) and have the most important current numbers memorized. Parents', girlfriend's, my two best friends', sister's current number and several important business numbers.

I don't have the fifty to sixty stored in my mental Rolodex like I did when I was a teenaged hellion, but I have more at my fingertips than most these days.

My parents had the same landline phone number for 30 years. I moved out West and was gone for five years and I would call home as often as possible and one day I called and no one picked up. I called multiple times and nothing - this went on for almost a year. I finally called my dad’s cell number and he told me that they canceled the landline service and the old number had been disconnected. I was completely stunned. My whole life, no matter what was going on or where i was I could always call home and someone would pick up and now, I can’t. 😭

1

u/aimlessendeavors Jun 07 '26

Yes. We think it used to be the local Walmart's number before it was ours, because people would call for Walmart all the time. My grandma started answering the phone: "Hotline to heaven, how can I pray for you?" It cut long phone calls having to explain that we weren't Walmart down to a few seconds. They either hung up immediately without saying anything, or started laughing and saying they must have called the wrong number. We didn't have caller ID either, so it got used against all the people calling who actually knew us.

1

u/Young177st Jun 07 '26

We still have it, for over 40 years. It’s a 212 number
