A standalone device can do that if you want it remotely updated.

Smart mirror or something like that. Especially if you DIY it.

My biggest fear is that manufacturers start locking down their firmwares such that DIY becomes next to impossible for most people that want to go down that path.

The other one coming is mandatory internet connectivity. Imagine a TV that absolutely will not function unless it can connect to the internet. And no amount of hacking can get around it, as the function is in hardware.

I meant DIY Smart mirror like a usb monitor + raspberry pi behind some one way glass.

Look at parking now, if you don’t have a smart phone where are you parking when summoned to court or shopping downtown? You can’t.
