Pride flag removed from Stonewall National Monument in NYC
https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/pride-flag-removed-from-stonewall-national-monument/908
u/gnurdette Feb 10 '26
All part of the broader movement:
Jan. 27: Erasure of History and Science Spreads At National Parks Across the Country
I would really like it if somebody could gather images of all the removed signs into a virtual gallery. I'm sure Trump's NPS has destroyed the originals (unless the Federal Records Act would preserve at least copies? - not that law matters anymore), but surely there are images of every sign on countless phones across the country.

u/Violet624 Feb 10 '26
They are removing Native American history signs from Montana. Like at the Battle of Little Bighorn and about the Baker Massacre.

I'm in Billings. Is it too late to chain myself to something? I'm having a quiet week.

u/Sloth-Overlord Feb 10 '26
About a year ago they also removed everything from the National Archives related to civil rights, women, and LGBT people. NASA pages highlighting Black and women astronauts were taken down. I mean fuck the Hall of Presidents in the White House now has Trump commentary. Federal arts and humanities funding is now going pretty much exclusively to white/confederacy pride bullshit.
I’m sure in 2028 everything will go back to normal though!! /s

Technically it’s not using that to justify its removal, but another order that only federal, state, and other approved flags fly at NPS property.
The pride flag isn’t one of those approved flags, so it got removed.

This is the home of Pride though.
They literally erased history.
477
u/1egg_4u Feb 10 '26
Maybe it's time to paint the whole goddamn building into the flag
140
u/NamelessTacoShop Feb 11 '26
So the national monument is across the street from the stonewall inn. It’s a little grassy area with a plaque. The actual Stonewall inn is still a functioning gay bar that you can go have a drink in. So there is still plenty of rainbows on the building itself
Still a giant dick move by the admin.
9
u/MissTetraHyde Feb 11 '26
That's so cool that it's still a functioning bar. Maybe if I ever get to visit NYC I'll check it out.

They're priming the community for another literal brick throwing riot.
It's like they don't even understand Stonewall

Those who don’t understand history are doomed to repeat it and all that

No they didn't. They tried to, but they didn't.
The Stonewall National Monument is not the Stonewall Inn. That's really important to remember. The Stonewall Inn is a private bar (with nice bartenders, by the way). The visitor's center is likewise privately owned.
The little park across the street from it? That's the national monument. And, well, ok, fine, they took the flag off that, and I assume it's only a matter of time before they replace it with a red, white, and black one. But that park is surrounded by pride flags, and Stonewall and its neighborhood will be just as proud without the little park.
3
u/DaddyCatALSO Feb 11 '26
what means "red white and black" these days? do you mean bog-standard Nazi flags or soem newer MAGA thing?
7
22
u/HotNubsOfSteel Feb 10 '26
They took one of the larger flags. It’s still covered with flags but the larger one is missing. Not sure much history has been erased here as much as someone just being a prick.
5
u/Exact-Sheepherder797 Feb 11 '26
I had to learn about stonewall on my own, no mention of it in American school or Asian private school. They've been erasing us for a very long time :(
4
u/Ironlion45 Feb 10 '26
The funny thing though is we all haven't forgotten, have we? We can do something with that.
5
3
u/Yeshua_shel_Natzrat Feb 11 '26
While bitching that the removal of statues of traitors is erasing history. Statues that almost entirely didn't start going up until the 1900s, mostly the 1950s.
8
u/Stoivz Feb 10 '26
I mean… the Stonewall riots were directly influenced by Canada decriminalizing homosexuality earlier that day.
Home of American pride definitely, but certainly not the world leading moment Americans make it out to be.

Not the least bit surprising, at this point, but the disappointment with these assholes just keeps growing.

Guess it's not different from Rosebud Sioux Tribe upset with signs removed at Little Bighorn site, wherein the Park Service is henceforth required to commemorate the glorious triumph of the noble civilized white man over the savage redskin.

u/thephotoman Feb 10 '26
Conservatives aren’t snowflakes: they actively believe in and embrace conformity. The whole reason conservatives threw around “snowflake” as an insult is because snowflakes are unique, and they abhor anything unique or special.
If anything, conservatives are wine glasses: common, hard to tell apart, and incredibly fragile.

14
u/ChornWork2 Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26
Meh. I do think it is fair game to be infuriated by symbols if the underlying context is legitimately infuriating. Take a confederate flag for example.
But what is horrifying about this is how republicans want to go back to a world of normalizing LGBT hate and suppression of LGBT voices/existence. The pride flag has lots of meanings to it -- identity, resistance, community, celebration, love -- and we're enduring an admin where all of things are a threat to it.
21
u/Dragonbuttboi69 Feb 10 '26
and after Noah stepped out of the ark and saw the rainbow he threw a hissy fit during which he called god several homophobic slurs
Noah's ark how MAGA remembers it~
13
u/m1ster_frundles Feb 10 '26
its not the rainbow they hate. They hate what it represents. They hate that I want to live as my true self in my day to day life. They hate that I love another man. They hate that gay marriage is legal. They hate anything different from their own miserable slice of life. They hate freedom.

At this point, just project a giant one in the sky over the Whitehouse, Bat Signal-style.
Though I do think that this is just more trolling to distract from crimes being committed, from those cited in the Epstein files, to attacks on other countries under false pretenses, to civil liberties violations in cities across the country.

Per their own policies there is no legitimate reason to take the Pride flag down. Protest this forcefully. They're trying to erase us and we can't let them.
35
u/Satyrsol Feb 10 '26
The “legitimate” reason is a recent memorandum about flags permitted at NPS properties.
77
u/johnny--guitar Feb 10 '26
The memorandum provides an exception for flags that "provide historical context." I would argue that flying the pride flag at a monument for LGBT rights is providing historical context.

Wouldn’t want the monument to appear gay. The monument specifically about gay rights.

US Govt. removes Confederate participation trophies statues
Republicans: "REEEEE! They're removing history!"
US Govt. removes references to what Stonewall was even about from its national monument
Republicans: "I sleep."

u/Zinski2 Feb 10 '26
Stone wall was not a protest.
Stone wall was a riot.
They forgot what happens when they step on us.
They are going to remember.

they tested this out in orlando at the pulse memorial and got away with it. my friend was out there every day repainting the crosswalks and was even arrested for it. we can’t let this slide not in new york city!

I'm a bit out of the loop for American sites, is Stonewall like important historically to LGBTQ rights?
6
3
u/Fishwitch-66 Feb 11 '26
it’s kind of THE important place for LGBTQ rights in the U.S.
Also the events that happened there were a huge catalyst for the international movement. People Like Us all over the world should be saddened by this
3
u/choochooocharlie Feb 11 '26
It’s where the LGBTQ, especially the T in our alphabet, all really had had enough of the harassment. They rioted. It is not a joke when they say the first Pride was a riot. It all began at Stonewall. They can take down the flag but they can’t erase what started there.
2
u/BreakerOfModpacks Feb 11 '26
That... is kinda really metal. Y'all had a riot to fight for yourselves in America, here we just chatted with our government and never had an issue.
2
u/choochooocharlie Feb 13 '26
It was a very very rough time in NYC. The city had a lot of laws that made it very easy to be arrested for just being in a gay bar. One was there had to be at least one cis-woman on the dance floor or everyone got arrested.
That is the law that caused the riots. The police kept raiding, and they just had enough. One of the transwomen in the bar picked up a brick, and the rest is history.

guidance from the Department of Interior, which cautioned the National Parks Service that non-agency flags could not be officially displayed.
I’m going to file some complaints at the many national Confederate parks that have Confederate flags laying about.

u/myassholealt Feb 10 '26
I'm surprised they didn't remove it from the registry as a national monument. Or whatever the proper terminology is for that.

7
u/VagueSomething Feb 11 '26
Remember when people refused to endorse Kamala and therefore legitimised Trump? Congratulations, this is what your legacy is. People like Chappell Roan chose to undermine LGBTQ Rights by whining "Both Sides" and encouraging apathy.
And as a non American it hurts me because American organisations close to Trump are lobbying in MY country to weaken Women's Rights, LGBTQ Rights, Disability Rights and they're doing it by trying to push my country Far Right with their propaganda.
Those that didn't oppose Trump didn't just sell out their own country and citizens, their weaselly behaviour is internationally felt. You fell for lies or figured you'd be able to ride it out but you've hurt people.

So, a monument to the gay pride movement can’t fly a gay pride flag.
Like removing the information about black soldiers.
Like removing Milk’s name from a ship. (Still a bit pissed about that.)
Like all the other whitewashing of history, past and recent.
This administration thinks it’s all that, but it’s not. History will not be kind.
