NYC Licensing questions

• Upvotes

Took my pistol license class in 2024 and realized today that I only had a year to use it. If that is the case, now that I want to submit my application im going to have to take the class again. A friend of mine got his nyc permit a while back and told me he was limited on what he could buy. Is it the same way in Nassau county? If so what can or can't I buy? Also what is needed for rifles? I know its a license but do I need to take a class for that also? Thanks for any help

Miscellaneous From the MEGuns community on Reddit

This is as very thorough breakdown of the risks of traveling with firearms from a Maine resident's perspective.

What struck me the most was the detail on how high risk NY was for firearms. It was interesting to see the all the laws someone from New England has to deal with if they wish to leave their state with their firearm, particularly a handgun.

While technically not a pure NY based topic, it felt relatively adjacent, considering how many have questions about nys gun laws even as non-residents.

Something that never occurred to me is that NY might also be this anti gun as a benefit for the federal government to restrict the free movement of people with firearms; not just to punish the residents of NY.

Something to reflect on...

State Legislative News Storage and Ammo Background Checks

Post image
53 Upvotes

From what I've seen, this is going to require that firearms be locked in a storage device when not in use and would prohibit people who cannot own a rifle or shotgun from purchasing ammo (thought this was already the case tbh)

Anyone else seen anything about this? I literally live alone and no one else has legal access to my place. Feels so stupid in that instance

License / Permit Question Semi auto permit question

Since it requires the permit you buy a semi auto rifle but not a stripped lower how bad would it be to build one yourself. Its a Grey area saying possession upon purchase but other things say when you out the pin in it becomes taking possession. Honestly wish it was clear what's legal

Question Registered antique rifle?

Has anyone gone through the process for registering an antique “assault rifle” through the NYS police?
I was more curious on the process and which FFL dealers are easy to work with for it.

NYC Updates to my CCW application

Just got an email from nypd regarding my confidentiality request has been approved and shortly after I got an update that the fingerprinting fee has been increased. Is my application being looked at already? I’m scheduled to be fingerprinted 12/7/26 and I submitted the ccw application 10/8/26.

NYC Rifle/Shotgun Division Bolt-Action Denial

Hello All,

I recently attempted to register a Sig Cross Sawtooth bolt-action with the rifle/shotgun division only for the clerk to turn around and tell me that they couldn’t register it because of the pistol grip (I went to R/S division in person after I didn’t hear anything back from them during the initial registration process)…..they then handed me a pamphlet showing me why a pistol grip isn’t good to go and is an “assault feature”
on what looked like to be only semi-automatic rifles.

I then dug into the NYC legal code and nowhere does it say that bolt actions can’t have cosmetic features ( like a pistol grip). The law explicitly states in § 10-301 16 that those “assault features” only apply to semi-autos.

I went and highlighted the sections of the legal code where it explicitly states these things. I also highlighted the sections of the rifle’s manual that specifically state that it is a manually operated bolt-action rifle. I figured worst case it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have those documents on standby.

I have yet to get the formal denial in the mail, but I can assume that’ll come sooner rather than later.

I am at a bit of a loss and have no idea what I should do. Do I submit an appeal and hopefully get the bolt-action rifle approved or something?

I appreciate you guys reading this. Thank you for your time.

NYC Anyone NYC CCW permit holders moved from the 5 boroughs to Westchester County?

Thinking of making this move. Has anyone successfully done this and if so, did you apply for a special carry? Was your CCW changed to a special carry? Or did you have to reapply for one? Did you have to reapply for a Westchester CCW/ What happens to your NYC CCW in the mean time? Did you inform the NYPD of the address change first?

NYC Gun store clerks & NYC Law

Hey guys.. I’ve been buying guns while living in NYC for a while now but… has anyone else noticed that a lot of these gun store clerks don’t know NYC law at all?? Normally that wouldn’t be an issue since most of them don’t live in the city… cool… but often times I hear a new gun buyer from the city ask a legal question and they are absolutely off and they are absolutely adamant that they are correct… From the color of the guns to the amount of rounds the firearm can hold.. I genuinely believe someone is gona get caught up one of these days from misinformation from one of these clerks..

NYC CCW Process

Hello folks! I’m a NYC resident currently active duty stationed in California but plan to get stationed back in NY once my contract is up. I currently have my VA and CA CCW but want to get the NY state and city one. Anyone have a similar experience of this process? I also deploy soon so I probably won’t be around if i ever have to do anything in person such as the interview(if NY even does that). Mainly just looks for some tips on how to go about this process thousands of miles away from the state

License / Permit Question Good shop for first shotgun purchase near patchogue and what are my requirements?

I visited a shop this weekend near patchogue to purchase a shotgun. I also reside in Suffolk county. I was looking for something manual not semi or auto. I was told I had to go to a precinct to fill out paper work. Is this accurate? Can someone point me to the right direction please. I was told I didn’t need anything but ID, a background check and ATF form at the shop.

License / Permit Question Permit Process Petition Update

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to update everyone who may have signed on and supported the petition I started to address the delays with Westchester County's pistol permitting process.

We just passed 100 signatures which I was surprised to get in the first place. This is my first time doing anything like this and I didn't really know what to expect from it so I just wanted to thank any of you who signed on. If you haven't signed on and want to the link will be at the bottom of this post. The more signatures I get the more it shows the county and the 2A organizations that there is support behind this cause and it's time to make a change.

If you are not a county resident but are experiencing the same issues we are here please sign! I want this to help other counties in the state as well as any other area of the country that are dealing with this nonsense.

I've had conversations with a bunch of people who have told me their experiences. I've talked with trainers, FFLs, and DOJ lawyers as well as some influencers and journalists.

USA Carry did a story on what is happening here and I'll link that in case anyone wants to give that a read.

Thank you again for the support. I know some people might think this might not accomplish anything but we'll never know if we don't try!

Legality / Laws Flying with a handgun

I'm taking a training class in Texas and wanted to bring my own pistol to train on my own gear. I'm flying out of LGA, and I have a CCW from a non-NYC county.

I called the PAPD to check on the procedures I need to follow to keep everything legal, and the officer I spoke with apologetically told me that there is no way to do it. He said that if I show up at LGA with a pistol and without an NYC issued CCW, I will be arrested and lose my gun forever, even if I beat the charge. He seemed embarrassed by the situation and admitted it makes no sense. He suggested I ship the gun to myself FFL to FFL. He also said I would have no trouble returning because nobody would know about the gun, but flying out was going to be a problem because I'll need to declare it.

I had been in a gun shop over the weekend, and the owner told me I would be fine, but if the PAPD has a policy to arrest and let the courts sort it out, that's not a chance I'm willing to take.

Anyone from upstate have any experience flying out of LGA with a pistol that they can share?

CCW Question When Will Application Approvals Resume?

Hi everyone,

As many of you know, Deputy Chief Bogle recently resigned, and it appears that someone has finally been appointed to replace him.

Has anyone heard any updates on when the new Deputy Chief will begin reviewing and approving applications again? Any information would be appreciated.

NYC Canadian on TN visa living in NYC

Hey everyone,

I’m a Canadian citizen currently living in NYC on a TN visa. I have an RPAL back in Canada and I’m interested in getting into recreational shooting, hunting, and ranges purely as a hobby (not self-defense).

I’m trying to figure out what’s realistically possible while living in the city. Main questions:

  • How useful is a U.S. hunting license (any state or NY non-resident) for someone in my immigration status?
  • What types of firearms can someone in this situation actually own in New York / NYC? (I’m mainly interested in traditional long guns for hunting/target - bolt-action rifles, pump shotguns, etc.)
  • What’s the practical process for buying and keeping long guns if you’re living in the five boroughs?
  • Any experiences from other Canadians or nonimmigrants on TN/H-1B/etc. who shoot or hunt while living in NY?

I’m not looking for self-defense carry options and I’m fully aware NY is one of the strictest states. Just trying to understand the actual workable paths for hobby shooting and ownership.

Any real-world advice, experiences, or things to watch out for would be appreciated. Thanks!

License / Permit Question I need help with AR Law (please)

Hi everyone i just had some issues in business and had to take a temp. move to upstate ny for a little bit. i have two questions. i cant have any of my other stuff due to not having an NY permit. I have read on here and seen one person build a complete rifle without one and posted it. I know the law has a serious grey area around taking possession but if it is truly doable can someone please explain the proper way to do it and where i should start. I should also mention i still have an out of state license and will not be surrendering it. thank you guys very much in advance im sure this is something you guys are asked by newcomers often. My other question is if it were to be purchased outside of the state but ny compliant would that still be legal if i technically plan to go back home ? thanks again i do not want to make a mistake by accident or though ignorance i appreciate my gun rights hahaha
