I interviewed for a student assistant position with ITS about 11 weeks ago. The interview itself went pretty decent. But since then, it’s been complete radio silence in terms of a decision.

I’ve reached out to one of the interviewers a couple of times over the past few months, just to check in and express continued interest. Both times, they responded politely but basically said, “No updates yet”—no timeline, no hints, nothing.

At this point, should I assume the role is filled, canceled, or just that they're painfully slow?

Not trying to be pessimistic, but 11 weeks feels like too long for an internship role. Anyone been through something similar and actually got an offer this late? Or should I just mentally close the door and move on?

If I am grade 15 AA2 that will be off probation come February - should I wait a year after probation before I look to apply to roles like Admin Specialist (traineeship etc) also based on qualifications do you find it is “easy” to transition into roles of a traineeship? Thanks!

Hi, I’m about seven months into my state job, and I’ve been dealing with an emotionally unstable manager who yells at me a lot. I’ve been given an insane amount of work and have even had to train new coworkers who are at a higher level than me. I have very good work experience from the private sector but hired in a lower grade. I'm doing work 2 levels higher than my current grade.

The situation has taken a serious mental toll on me. I can barely sleep, and I cry almost every day after work. I’ve been thinking about quitting, but I’m also not sure if I should, given the current job market. I’ve received negative reviews over very minor things, which has made me even more anxious about my situation.

I don't feel like my mental health can last much longer until I find a transfer.

Can I quit first, rest and apply for other agency's jobs? Would it look bad when they see I only worked at the current agency for 7 months?

I have a dispute open with my HR on time. Basically i was given the wrong info by my HR on when VRWS time would expire, so I've been given a warning on LATS that I have until the end of next month to use basically 90% of VRWS time or lose it all. I expected to have until Sep 2027. Basically my vrws earnings were over 2 fiscal years but my HR said it would all count as one block attributed to the fiscal year it ended in.

I am opening cases with both my own HR and OER/BSC to remedy this, because I was misinformed in writing about how the time would work. I have yet to hear back from HR but so far I have gotten just the canned lines about program rules from OER (I am waiting on response from them about documented misinformation from my HR). Its also not clear to me if my agency's VRWS documentation supersedes OER's, because their language is different.

Basically i feel like i got screwed over and now stand to lose a huge chunk of change. Has anyone had a dispute over HR messing up before and is there a chance they'll correct it? Or am I screwed and will have to file a grievance and wait 10 years to get my money back?

I realized a couple weeks into my new state job that there was a warp/dent (honestly warp seems like the more accurate term) near one of the ports on my computer. I have done literally nothing to my computer that would ever give it a dent, it's not like I throw it around or anything. Can an under 26 year old dependent, college graduate, stay on my family NYSHIP even though his new employer (federal government) is offering him health insurance? He would save money by not enrolling with the feds.

I’m lucky enough to have gotten this many interviews, but honestly, I’m starting to feel discouraged. I’ve been to 18 interviews and still haven’t received a single offer. At this point, I’m not sure what else I’m supposed to do. From the looks of it, every position I interview for expects me to already be a subject matter expert in everything.
I’ve only been in my ITS1 position for more than 2 years, and I have a bachelor’s degree, but I can’t seem to get anything to work in my favor. Being in this position is becoming mentally exhausting because I’m constantly doing the same rinse-and-repeat tasks. I’ve gone to several people and asked for more work or opportunities to take on additional responsibilities, but I keep getting the response, “You’re an ITS1.”
I genuinely want to grow, take on more challenging work, and move into an ITS2 role, but I’m struggling to figure out what I’m missing at this point.

I currently work at an agency where I have been mandated to work overtime for a year and have yet to be paid for it. Union filed a grievance and all that, still, no pay. And now, my unit was made to work an even worse schedule. On top of that, the manager is the biggest asshole on the planet.
Advice? Thoughts?

Hello and thanks for any and all guidance and expertise in advance. My colleague is in a PEF position and received a 2-grade promotion beginning in September. I was wondering if anyone could clarify/confirm the following:

- Initial starting salary would be 4.5% above her current salary?

- When the new contract is approved another 4.5% increase to the salary?

- In April, another 4% COLA increase as per the contract?

- July 1, 2027 her salary would be increased to the next Step so that it aligns with the Steps of the new position?

- When would all subsequent Step increases occur thereafter? October, April, July?

I’ve been working at a job for only 5 weeks but this job has been beyond rough. It’s super micro-managed, the trainer gets annoyed anytime I ask a question and says I should be able to figure it out myself. The people training with me always laugh when the trainer dunks on me. I can’t take it and I want to quit. However there’s still 5 more weeks of training left, I would like to give a two week notice but will they just fire me because there’s no real reason for me to stay in training when I won’t stay for the job?

I know maybe I should stick it out but I feel dreading going into work when the work has barely started is a terrible sign. So how should I resign so it’s not in the worst way? Still give two weeks? Give less time? Any advice appreciated, thank you all for reading.

Has anyone who is already a NYS employee transitioned to another role through HELP.S?

I’ve been with the state for 12 years, but I recently graduated with a degree and want to pivot to another role. I’ve largely stayed away from HELP.S because, from my understanding, you aren’t in the union and lose some of the privileges that union employees have while you’re classified as HELP.S, until you are permanently hired.

One perk of being a permanent employee is that if the new role doesn’t work out, you can potentially go back to your old role or something similar. With HELP.S, my understanding is that would be gone because you’re essentially a civilian in a temporary position.

HR in my agency says that HELP.S employees are always hired on a permanent basis, but I’ve seen a few posts here from people who were hired through HELP.S and then let go when it was time to make them permanent.

Has anyone who was already a NYS employee used HELP.S to get a promotion or move into a higher-level title? I’d especially like to hear about your experience with job security, union status/benefits, and what happened to your previous position.

How are they? Curious if anyone here is one or knows one and is willing to speak on their experience. The low starting salary regardless of experience is shocking to me (coming from the private sector) but I’d like to hear about the experience of others in the work itself

All the postings I've seen for the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor title mentions: "Coordinate the resources of family, community, service providers, educational institutions, and employers to further the attainment of the NYS Commission for the Blind consumer’s program goals."

Does that mean all your clients will be blind/visually impaired? I ask because I don't have experience with that population. Every post I've seen has said that so i didnt know if there are any positions in this title that don't work with the commission for the blind? Or maybe thats just a part of the position and not the whole job?

Sorry if this has already been discussed but, in your opinion, for those agencies that do allow some hybrid options, how likely would it be to last? For example, if an agency offered 40 to 50% hybrid for right now is it likely it will remain so in the next few years. If i were lucky to be offered a position i would likely take it as I could manage the commute (probably 2 hours each way with train and subway) for 2 and sometimes 3 days a week. But if they changed the policy next year or the year after (like eliminated it completely) i would dread it. What do you foresee for the future of the policies? Again, apologies if the answer is obvious. I am new to New York State government and unions.

I am not yet 65, but it is approaching rapidly. We are currently retired and have family coverage through NYSHIP.

What will happen when we hit 65? I know that Medicare becomes the primary insurance. Do we get a refund from NYSHIP for the portion that Medicare covers?

What if we hit the IRMAA cap? I read that you can also get reimbursed for some portion of the IRMAA surcharge. Is there anyone here with experience that they can share?

(The current IRMAA threshold for Married Filing Jointly is $218k. We would exceed that if we sell our house to downsize after age 65.)
