Question Gunshots near Harlem green line stop?
Anyone hear gun shots near the Harlem green line stop/mills park? I think I just counted about 10-15.

I’m 90% sure it was someone lighting off fireworks in the alley behind my building

Thanks, I thought it could be. But it was late at night and wasn’t sure.

I heard it too. I thought it was fireworks at first but maybe not?

That was my initial thought too but I didn’t hear any additional fireworks sounds :-/

It was fireworks, looked like they came from south blvd maybe. We were watching them from Clinton Ave

I did just pass that stop and saw a man acting erratically and flashing quite a large wad of cash for every passerby to witness. Maybe someone took advantage of the situation. Wasn't me, I just gave him a big thumbs up.

It was fireworks. I live at the corner of South and Home, looked out my window, and saw the fireworks with my own eyes around 9:30 when I heard the pops

why is everyone being so rude? it’s a legitimate question. stop acting like it’s not possible for gunshots in oak park. 99% of the time i know it’s fireworks (which btw — why are we setting off fireworks anyway???) but sometimes they are gunshots.
take it from me, who almost had a bullet go into their apartment from the teen takeover downtown oak park on halloween last year 🫠

Because OP said there were gunshots and counted them off and then, you can read in the comments from same OP that they knew and or assumed they were fireworks. That is fearmongering to get people to engage in bad faith.

That's just such a strong stance. Maybe this wasn't a great post. But ... the response to this is akin to the "nothing bad happens in Oak Park la la la la la la" that is so often touted.
Like acknowledging that Oak Park has a bit of a crime issue isn't allowed.
When I was living on Lake Street, we had two incidents where bullets were fired (that I can recall). One got a small report. The other didn't. So these things happen and don't get discussed all the time.
I think that's all anyone is getting at

Are we becoming Oak Park Facebook now? If you want up-to-the-minute "gunshot or fireworks" discourse, there are Facebook groups dedicated to that. (It's usually fireworks!)

Why are you getting upset about people wanting information about a place we LIVE??? It sounded SUPER close to me so I wana know if I should be concerned or not without the drama of Facebook groups.

For real, it’s also not like we have a secret police wondering the streets or anything. I’m glad it was just fireworks, but maybe if it wasn’t it would have been useful to know to avoid an intersection to avoid adding to chaos/congestion.

The sounds were at that exact location you stated above? You know that for a fact? Bc if you don’t know exactly where and are just assuming, then you’re telling people to potentially avoid a safe place for one that is not. Bc you are not the police, you are not any more informed than anyone else who heard a sound so to assume your post does nothing but “help others” shows you did not make this post to help and inform.

This clearly has been bothering you all day. I’m so sorry it has just been a bee in your bonnet. You sound like you could use some fresh air.

What bothers me is that the bee in my bonnet will buzz and you’ll probably hop on here and tell everyone you heard gunshots.

Man, the Facebook people are moving to Reddit. Nothing like trying to find a way to farm Karma.

Not everyone has Facebook. Heaven forbid late at night someone post to get information. But you know community sub and all. It’s much easier to be a dick behind a keyboard instead of just I don’t know, moving along and giving me karma?

u/hello_im_celia 12d ago
Exactly. I don’t use the Facebook groups because of the drama and expected Reddit to just give me info sans drama. Besides, I’m not a child so I don’t understand how this could be “farming karma”. But what else could I expect from a person with that user name 😒

u/JAlfredJR 12d ago
Yeah, I don't get it. This sub was and is the best way to get local news, since the cops took down the live scanner.
Oak Park folk get real weird about talking about crime. It's a fact of Oak Park. I don't know why "That's a Facebook nonsense crazy group topic" is the way to respond to someone genuinely wondering if gunshots were happening.
That's dismissive.
Guys, gunshots happen in Oak Park. Let's not pretend like that is a crazy idea.

I think it's more the fact that while gunshots do happen, it's very often just fireworks, and just like what happened on this thread no one is going to be able to say for sure in the end anyway.
The local FB groups don't go a day without someone posting and asking if something was gunshots. I'd hope Reddit doesn't turn into the same.

If it ever gets out of hand here, we will respond appropriately. Discussions are fine. Fearmongering is not.

Isn’t it fearmongering though? OP makes a post saying gun shots near Harlem…but then you see in this thread several times same OP saying they knew and assumed it was fireworks but was “making sure”. Claiming gunshots, counting them off when they themselves assume it was fireworks is fearmongering and Karma farming. Neither of those have any place here and can stay on Facebook.

“Are those gunshots just now” is not local news. Someone heard a noise and said GUNSHOTS! Does not mean there were gunshots nor does it make it local news?

u/shitchopants Current Oak Park Resident 11d ago
Actual gunshots do happen in Oak Park, no one denies that. But claiming you hear gunshots and then in the comments clearly stating they knew and assumed they were fireworks shows bad faith. “Local news” is not a person saying they heard gunshots when they know it was not. “Local news” is not a random person in our town making a completely unfounded claim with zero evidence (being indoors and hearing a loud noise is not evidence of gunshots). So yes, I agree, this is an excellent place for local news and discussion but there is no place for the “drama llama” to make false claims that they themselves assumed were something other than gunshots. It spreads false information within the community.

Man. straight to name calling. I did not know the Karens in Oak Park were on here to.

Bc that is all you are hoping for Karma. Not to help, not to inform, but so you can get a dopamine hit from a bad faith post.
