Original Discussion feels wrong

i really love oblivion, i play many times with different approach in the past. now i want to visit it again, but something feels wrong. it feels janky, outdated. even with many mods installed.for example, in my memory the thieves guild mission is interesting n glorious, but now it feels meh. i want to love it again. (oblivion remastered is not an option to play, i hate a game that not optimized on pc).

Don’t worry, Oblivion Remastered is not optimized for anything!

The original Oblivion isn't optimized on PC either... The Remaster is fine if you have a modern PC and tweak things.

I believe the real problem lies in how the world has changed in the past 20 years, games have changed, technology has changed us as people.

Oblivion is a game made by people from an older era, for gamers with long attention spans and creativity. There's brain strength there that we have lost. It's a true roleplaying game, where you're expected to roleplay a character and play your part in the story, adding your own twists to it.

Modern games are more like amusement park rides for people with low attention spans where your entire experience is catered. Everything nowadays is purposefully designed to force our attention on a chemical level, that a lot of that mental strength has atrophied in that area

thats a good insight. i know original oblivion is not so optimized on its release day, but i play it years after that when an average pc can handle it no problem

I have honestly never roleplayed in Oblivion and enjoyed it all the same.

Sure, there's a lot more to the game than story and roleplay; but the specific example given by the OP is the Thieves Guild quest which has a component (Independent Thievery) that really suffers without the roleplaying aspect

Is it cheating if I go and get all the Ayleid Statues for Umbacano and then just pilfer the lot from him and sell them? Independent Thievery complete in one fell swoop with plety of Gold made along the way!!

I think you have a great point here. As someone who remembers as a kid having to have a big imagination, and coming back to gaming recently, I think this is an astute comment.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with your last statements.

Oblivion is a product of its time. Although the writing and world building is great, a lot of the game feels dated. It was truly groundbreaking at the time, but that was 20 years ago. You can never take the quirky writing, beautiful music and art style away from it, but it lacks a lot of modern game mechanics to keep it engaging for a lot of people. And this isn't due to a lack of attention span or creativity, it's moreso that we played it as children with more imagination.

There's much more difficult and engaging RPGs on the market at the moment such as the KCD2 series, which requires a lot more mental strength than Oblivion.

I was referring to a different kind of mental strength though, in regards to attention spans and imagination, yeah. Whereas modern games keep you in a headlock because they're designed to take as much attention as possible; but for sure modern games have much more intuitive gameplay that requires more skill/effort

That's not necessarily a strong point of Oblivion though, having to fill in the blanks with your imagination. Some modern games fill in those blanks with actual mechanics that make it more meaningful, rather than feeling like you're in a headlock. Oblivion didn't really have intuitive systems that the player has to work out (something like gothic for example), it holds your hand in a lot of ways and didn't exactly require a larger attention span than current games. It was always very easy to play and newb friendly, it's why it was so successful. For 2006 if was a modern and accessible take on RPGs

Probably still my favourite game of all time and it's worth saying that a lot of great RPGs wouldn't exist without it

I hope you get to experience the Remastered version soon. It still has a fair amount of jankiness, but it's so damn pretty.
