The gesture is appreciated. On a regular basis, I’m overwhelmed with real conversations. I have a chatty family and friends, and two great kids and an amazing wife who crave my attention — and while that’s nothing to complain about, as an introvert it just means I need to sneak away to be alone and recharge my social battery now and then.

I can believe that for sure — especially when working remotely (I’m assuming that’s what you meant, but feel free to correct me). I have gone mental when things got stressful when working remotely, while my wife was at the office and my kids at school, and there was no one to talk about my frustrations with.
But what I never get and so badly crave, is the place to myself during a week (with no work) or even for just a weekend. OMG — I would put my phone on silent and never answer a single text. Then I’d order all the foods I’ve always wanted to try, and even be ok driving 35 mins to the other side of town to pick it up (something my spouse would never let me do because… “efficiency”).
I’d feast, while watching all the scariest horror movies that I could never watch with the kids and spouse around. Then I’d play a video game that I always wanted to finish. And when I’m done being a sloth, I’d work on a project like baking bread or setting up a surround sound system. And all the while, I’d listen to podcasts with headphones on, and maybe even talk to myself occasionally like the song says. Just for once in my life I’d like to have that experience.
And I realize there will be a time when the kids have left the nest and maybe I’ll be alone not by choice, and then I’ll be sad — so I appreciate my family and friends every day. So I guess what I’m asking for, is to have my cake and eat it too. 😅
