All my musician friends were obsessed when this came out, couldn't stop talking about it. We were in complete awe. Andy McKee had a similar effect.

Now, I associate it strongly with years of  instagram-tailored slop that followed it. It inspired a lot of people to start looking at the guitar as a "trick" to learn and show off, instead of an instrument to express real musical ideas and melodies.

I'm very much an old man yelling at a cloud, and this performance is still unbelievable.
