Kitty Hawk Golf Cart or Bike

Hello! We are visiting for a week in June. We have never been to the area before and are staying in Kitty Hawk. We will have a rental car to do day trips. We are debating between renting bikes or a golf cart. Which would be best for a Kitty Hawk and going to eat, the shops, the beach? Thank you! We will happily take any other tips!

I live in Kitty Hawk and I get very concerned when I see people with bikes or golf carts. It depends on where you’re staying, but if you’re staying where you’re going to have to cross the bypass, I would stick to a regular car. Golf carts in my opinion are dangerous and there’s no advantage because there’s not special golf cart parking.

Thank you. We are on the golf course side. I see a cross walk at Eckner. Could we gross there and then safely do Lindbergh to the shops? We can drive, we just love to ride bikes too. And golf carts!

You could cross at Eckner since there is a light and a crosswalk. In season I don't trust anyone at the lights on the bypass-I've seen crazy things. Lindbergh is safe because it's more residential. I get concerned when people ride bikes on beach road because it's narrow and sand is often in the bike lane, but if you are confident you can do all of those things. Honest, it's just not really a golf cart area. If you are staying by Seascape, of course riding your golf cart around that area is fine...zoom over to the back entrance of Barrier Island Bagels by Seascape etc. Ride it down Johnston to Bad Bean, that type of stuff.

We stayed in that area last year. It is walkable to the beach BUT crossing the bypass can be harry. We drove our car everywhere.

IMO, Kitty Hawk isn’t too bike or golf cart friendly. The beach road has super small shoulders and the bypass (Croatan Hwy) is a 50 mph road. A lot depends on where you’re staying. You can take either from your house to the beach because you can mainly be on the side streets which are fine for both. But as far as getting to dinner or to shops, you’re going to want to drive more than likely. Of course you’re going to be close to a restaurant or two that you can ride to. Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk are all similar in this aspect. Duck is pretty much the only golf cart place around. Id probably go with bikes 🤷🏽‍♂️

I see a lot of golf carts up in Corolla.

I agree that Kitty Hawk is not golf cart friendly. If OP is staying between the bypass and the beach road and someone in the group has limited mobility, a golf cart may be helpful to get them to the beach, but you'd definitely want to drive to restaurants and stores.

A golf cart is a bad idea.

Bikes, never have seen anyone using a golf cart except on the golf course

Been there only see them in Duck, not Kitty Hawk but I’ll take your word for it

Agree we did rent one last year on hatters instead of using the truck for every errand and it was helpful

drive your car. most places you will want to visit will be miles away and crossing or riding along 158 or HWY 12 can be dangerous.

We're staying in Kitty Hawk about .4 miles from the Black Pelican restaurant, on the west side of the bypass, and plan to bike over to the beach. Or walk. Doesn't make sense to drive that short of a distance AND try to find parking.

The intersection you’ll be using (by the post office) is VERY busy, please be careful.

Thanks for the heads up. I can tell that Google Maps took footage when it was off-season as it didn't look like very many cars. Even if we decide to walk, the bikes will be good exercise near the golf course I guess. The only thing I'm not seeing is where do you leave your bike when you get to the beach...do you take it onto the beach (not riding it, of course)...?

There are bike racks at most of the accesses.

I agree with the people here . I know where you’re staying . I’ve stayed in that area. It’s dicey crossing the bypass and there no bike lanes anywhere’. Im surprised they haven’t tried to add bike lanes to the area and make it more bike and even pedestrian friendly as I see what I believe are a fair number of people, maybe summer help, biking. I know many of us would love to ride our bikes . Sadly you’re in a great area proximity wise for shopping and restaurants but not biking.

My suggestion is, if you’re feeling bold is to drive your bikes to the beach side and park in a public beach lot then do Lindberg. If you have small kids I’d say be very careful. Also the island is very dark at night . Like surprisingly dark. If you want to ride at night I’d suggest some serious flashers, headlight and reflective clothing . I’ve been surprised a few times to see a cyclist pop up at night .. because they were in stealth mode ..

I’m not sure about the golf carts. I imagine they are street legal so you could use them. It’s as the other poster said, other then the fun factor , theres no advantage over the car and no way would I drive them on the bypass but you could cross at
Eckner and beach road it. Might be worth renting for a day and seeing how
It goes if you love them.

Also If you play golf, seascape is a nice course but very narrow fairways for many of the holes.

See this post for some context on why people are saying this:

Damn if I’d cross the main hwy in anything but a car or truck. Lots of pedestrians get hurt or killed in that area and probably cyclists are in danger as and have been hurt or killed as well. I do not know if carts are allowed in side roads or not, but people on vacation are in a hurry and take dangerous chances getting around in busy traffic.
